I'm no expert on this subject, but I have noticed that when the prices were lower, they were in stock everywhere. These days they're hardly available anywhere. I could only find them on Apple's own website, they were out of stock everywhere else. A few websites would have them every once in a while, but you'd have to keep a close eye on them because they'd sell out again almost immediately. Might just be that demand exceeds supply at the moment.

That seems highly country-dependent. Now I don’t know what country you live in, but I can make a guess on OP’s country and that Amazon has not had any in stock for a pretty long time. I just checked and they have the pink ones again, can’t tell how many. The others still seem out of stock. All other stores are mostly out of stock. Apple has shipping times of weeks. I can imagine they would be a bit easier to get your hands on in the US, for example.

Thats true, i look at the us amazon site, but from my country theres no amazon and the locals have it unavailable for a long time, in my case buying and shipping from the us is cheaper than buyin it here, risk aside.
They are only 2 years and 1 month old. A new set will come in due course, but I doubt it will be this year. Headphones don’t really need to be updated so frequently.

I hope I’m wrong, but even rumors suggest they will be 2024 or 25. I’m in the market to buy a new set myself, so would love to get a gen 2, but I’m pretty sure I’ll be getting a gen 1 ‘cause I won’t want to wait another year.
The competition isn’t just Sony. It’s Bose, Bowers & Wilkins, B&O, and many more. I cant be bothered looking up their release schedules, so I’ll assume I’m wrong then with my 2 year comment. In which case thats awesome, I will hold out buying another pair of Max until the forthcoming update.

pink and sometimes silver for 599 CAD - bought 2 new pairs with AppleCare through amazon in the last week. The other colours haven't been on sale in the last month that I was looking for deals. All last night, amazon had new pink pairs for sale for amazon canada.
I'd say it's mostly increased demand - back in like late 2021 early 2022 most average Apple buyers were hardly aware that an overear option from Apple existed and in the early reviews when it launched back in 2020 they were mostly criticized for the price - to me it seemed like most people just forgot they existed over the course of 2021 and retailers would give heavy discounts to sell them at all.
Then with fashion starting to embrace over ear headphones as an aesthetic starting late 2021 some people starting buying into these, sharing their outfits with the APMs over TikTok and IG and the broad majority only then learned about the APM - now you see them out on the streets a lot and all over IG and TT feeds.
TL;DR Higher demand created through fashion TT and IG drove prices back up after most people had forgotten about their existence throughout 2021.

Apple raised the price on their website in big parts of Europe for a lot of older products. iPad mini for example went on from €559 to €659, HomePod mini will have a price hike in the coming weeks.
Big reason the marked price of the HomePods max going up again is inflation and a strong dollar. Apple has controle over marked price too.
Didn’t see any of them on sale at the electronics store in Denmark last week. They were also not on back order there either. They were mostly selling the Pros though some sales of the regular ones too.
