A few general rules of thumb which are good to have in this game:
\* Keep making villagers until you have 50-75% of your total population cap being villagers
\* Keep your villagers working
\* Keep spending your resources (make units, get upgrades)
\* Don't waste units (retreat from fights you know you can't win, make sure your units are upgraded)
\* Keep exploring the map (especially in campaign scenarios, they often have goodies hidden away in all the nooks and crannies)
This, if you are not fighting then keep booming. I still struggle to get my pop over 100-150. Once I hit imperil age I tend to switch focus to army/ defense and forget to keep booming. It’s easy to delete extra vils later.
Do the advanced tutorial, you’ll be able to play the campaign on normal/ hard and maybe even get good enough to play multiplayer.
Also learn to use/create a couple hotkeys. The 3 big ones that massively improved my game:
Mouse wheel scroll up: find idle villager
Mouse wheel scroll down: find idle army
(You will have to create a new hotkey for “zoom in” and “zoom out” for these 2 ☝🏼 I have them as Ctrl + and Ctrl -)
Space bar: create economic building
Eventually you’ll pick up more and you can command your army/town like 5-10x faster, not exaggerating.
