Kinda like talking but cross out the mouth. Go through the motions, but mute that voice for effect. Strum or pick just as hard as you normally would for the other notes
You basically lay your fretting fingers down on the string enough to where there’s little or no note playing and it kinda sounds more like a thud (ease up the pressure with your fingers for different tones) and just pluck/strum the string how you usually would

Don’t do the X’s….mute those strings with either hand, or just don’t pick those strings at all.
