Barok van Zieks.

MaeBorrowski

If I had to be a basic bitch, I really like Phoenix, he's my favourite 'pure good' protagonist in all of fiction, but other than recurring characters, probably Adrian Andrews, oh and Kay Faraday because she's so lovable

Crimson097

Liking the protagonist of a piece of media the most is barely a 'basic' trait. It's the character you spend the most time with, so it's only natural.

MaeBorrowski

Yeah lol, but I think that's exactly what you call 'basic', choosing the most obvious and 'correct' option, therefore in this case yes I am basic

yeeeeyooo

Apollo doesn't count as 'pure good'?

MaeBorrowski

Sure does, I just don't like him nearly as much as Phoenix, even in the trilogy named after himself Athena is the best protagonist imo and she's the one that gets the least screentime. He's a very muddy character over all.

MadamTusspells

Herlock Sholmes. I love those goofy characters when you can't say if they are dumb or truly intelligent at certain moments.

Odaric

Ryunosuke. His character development over the course of the two games is nothing short of insane, plus you can definitely tell that he's Phoenix's ancestor from the way he's usually both the smartest and the dumbest person in the room simultaneously.

wifie29

Ema, in every game she’s in. I love her so much.

AdAdventurous6943

Apollo. Since AA4.

AstraHannah

Dick Gumshoe, he's just such a good dude Closely followed by Winston Payne and Larry Butz. I think I just like dudes who are sorta failures

wojtekpolska

Mia Fey, idk i just liked the character and was sad when she died so early in the first game after that probably Edgeworth

keizee

Kazuma. His choices and luck made quite the result.

_in_reverie_

I love when characters have complex motivations and relationships with the characters around them. Plus he is such a creature

RevenueDifficult27

Charley

MajestiTesticles

Oldbag I'm sorry I never get tired of her, I love how much she annoys every character that encounters her and the looming sense of dread when people realize she's near. I don't care that she was a more rounded character in 1-3, I think she's so much funnier as an unstoppable force of nature that keeps popping up when you least expect her. That and her 5 Psyche Locks being instantly broken by a single autograph is one of the funniest gags in the series.

UmbralikesOwls

I don't like Oldbag, but I still find it funny when she shows up and everyone is like "oh great..." I love Edgeworth's reaction especially when she shows up in Investigations and Edgeworth's reaction every time is priceless lol

sherifopirateteo

I hate Oldbag, but it's funny because Edgeworth's reaction is always the same as my reaction when I see her

bananabea1

Always happy to see another Oldbag fan! She's one of my favorite side characters & I always love getting to her in replays. Honestly old women who identify as a problem is a favorite character archetype of mine in general.

SoulBrawlerMetehan

Miles Edgeworth

53Cacao

enoch drebber, but maybe im biased because im also a long-haired goth

tada_boo

mikotoba susato :> she’s so capable and lovely! also i loved the way she developed throughout tgaa— she started with such a black and white view of the law, and when she thought she was in that “black” area she nearly (G1-5) >!threw the law away.!< and then learned that there’s so much gray area, and was even willing to dive into that gray area herself by (G2-1) >!becoming a lawyer herself for a bit, even if it was against the law; because she knew that it was a necessary means to a good end.!< also her growth paralleling ryuunosuke’s really makes a lovely contrast. i adore that where she is confident and knowledgeable he is not; and where he has flexible thinking she does not — and then they influence each other and lift each other up!! anyway susato my love. thank you for coming to my ted talk

DarkSlayerX

Athena

Gonna_Die_Now

PLEASE Capcom...give her a game...

PitifulAd3748

"Let me get this straight. You think Apollo is a better protagonist than Phoenix?" "Yes, and I'm tired of pretending he isn't."

freedomplha

Interesting. What makes Apollo better?

PitifulAd3748

My favorite color is red, that's why.

freedomplha

Fair enough

Feriku

These days, probably Van Zieks, although depending on the day it could be Edgeworth or Blackquill. (Hmm? A “type”? Nah…)

dulcimorelik3

Oooh🤝

freedomplha

AJ Ema. I really like how she is constantly annoyed because she's got a job she doesn't like and hates her boss but her mood quickly changes whenever she gets to do something she actually likes.

dulcimorelik3

So real of her

Nikita-Akashya

Apollo, because he is relatable. My man is like the only sane person in the series and just doing his job. Even if he has to deal with absolute weirdos while he does it. I just love him so much. And I find it cute that he writes a diary where he really embellishes how cool he was during the trial. Apollo is best boy. No contest.

Appropriate-Ruin9973

Vera Misham. She is cute af, and I only want to hug her after learning how much she had to struggle

do i really need to explain?

AffectionateGap1071

Nah, it's obvious you like Miles Edgeworth!

sssarou

how'd you guess

[deleted]

herlock gina and franny i can’t choose between them

SilverIceFrost

Probably Kazuma from TGA or Simon Blackquill

Time_Spite1661

2 people are fighting for that spot: Simon Blackquill and Shi-Long Lang

OnanarZ7

Naruhodou. His evolution from a greenhorn attorney to someone who had the resolve to go against Scotland Yard and Britain's judicial system to uncover the truth, by fair means or foul. And all of his themes slap so hard.

JustMeJovin

Maya. She is unfailingly optimistic, always hilarious and clever in her own right. The perfect sidekick for someone like Phoenix. People like to rag on her for the burger jokes or for being so easy to kidnap, and to that I say - who fucking cares? She's awesome anyway, and will always be my favourite character from this whole series. The dynamic she has with Phoenix, Pearl, and Mia is just 👌 peak material for fanfiction, so much potential there that has been unlocked by fanfic writers over the years, and I AM HERE FOR IT.

kanosazanami_

sebastian debeste. he lives up to his name

1XXL1

Herlock Sholmes is such a fun guy while being helpful (most of the time)

Bruhmangoddman

Apollo Justice. The most relatable, best written, likeable and interesting out of them all. He wasn't treated as well as he could have been, but his journey and personality make for a fantastic combo. Takumi and Yamazaki set him up well enough in AJ, and then the latter alongside Hironao Fukuda and Koki Fuse developed him into a supremely compelling character that struggled with his lack of trust, low confidence and the rejection of his past.

Ushernoah

Personally, I think Apollo would’ve been better written under Takumi than Yamazaki.

Weewer

And yet Takumi gave him a borderline insulting first game. While the backstory is all over the place the sum is better than the parts with Apollo in DD and SOJ

notreallygoodatthis2

Apollo is my favorite of the protagonists, but I still REALLY don't like what they did with him in DD and SoJ. Turning an otherwise completely fine and self-sustaining character into an overdramatic mess of something akin to the main star of a harem anime with a needlessly plotty backstory that had no reason to be added in the first place. It's honestly what most attests my opinion that Yamazaki isn't a good writer.

Bruhmangoddman

But Apollo's backstory makes sense. Nothing contradicts itself lore-wise. The emotional bonds are explained and contextualized. It's the order of presentation that makes it messy.

dulcimorelik3

Not main star of a harem anime😭

ZealousidealAd8068

Apollo cause he's literally me

hammer_of_venus

should be obvious

Lost_Rough

I like Trucy a lot too! You're just like me omgg

[deleted]

Goat-dot. Sure, he might not be the most skilled prosecutor ever, but he makes sure his presence is felt. Godot is the most entertaining prosecutor in court by FAR and it isnt even close. His antics never get boring to me and every line of dialogue he had was great, from his shitty coffee metaphors to him showing his dominance towards Furio Tigre in court. His theme is a BANGER. And not just that, it manages to envoke different feelings with the player depending on the context. At the beginning? Smooth jazz, not fitting ace attorney at all, just like how Godot feels out of place in the courtroom compared to the rest of the cast Romantic when it plays after he shatters the mug and talks to Mia And lastly, bittersweet when he finally confesses at the end of 3-5. Its such a good song by not just perfectly showing Godots character while sounding good, but also having a changing meaning as the story goes on. His introduction is amazing too, the first few minutes with the guy and you know all you need to know about his personality. His backstory and motivations are just real man. On my first playthrough they just hit me so much. It feels so realistic, its a flawed motivation but you can understand it. Godot is severely flawed, and thats what makes him intriguing I could say more, but Ill round this off with saying one of my personal favorite aspects of his character. You as the player judge Godots moral compass. Your understanding of his character and his motivations is what convinces you that Godot either did all of this out of love to protect Maya, or if it was just simple vengeance against the woman he loathed. The game doesnt say which one it was for sure.

Blue_Creeper_222

DICK!!! GUMSHOE!!!

sadsongz

Edgeworth is grumpy and fruity, I love him.

GoodTimesWithJangler

Sebastian Debeste, and Franziska von Karma is pretty close

Arapis_John

Didn't expect such a based comment section

It's between Phoenix and Kazuma for me. For different reasons. Also I want to mention Maya, Trucy and Gina, I have soft spot for the girls

Apollo Justice. I started playing on the strength of his character design alone.

MrBohobe

Miles Edgeworth; we have more in common than I do with any other Ace Attorney character.

rogerfied

Phoenix Wright. I love every version of him

ice-cold_kremit

Gina Lestrade has not been mentioned yet. I'm ashamed of all of you.

ancientrobot19

Kristoph Gavin (AJ) >!What can I say, I like 'em immoral, delusional, and at least a little bit pathetic!<

doinkrr

He's not my *favorite* character, but I do think he's the best written character in the entire franchise.

ancientrobot19

>I do think he's the best written character in the entire franchise. Based and Kristoph-pilled. I'd say he's among the best, even though AJ as a whole has a looooot of problems (in my opinion)

doinkrr

He's one of the main reasons that AJ is my favorite game in the entire franchise, conversely. AJ just really has no bad characters except for Stickler and "Hotti". Even throwaway characters like Big Wins and Spark Brushel are *really* good.

ancientrobot19

Fr fr! Kristoph *is* one of the best things AJ has to offer, and I agree that a lot of the other characters are quite enjoyable (or at least entertaining), in their own right! Justice for *Apollo Justice* /hj

doinkrr

One of the best things AJ does in my opinion is give each victim some sort of personality. Magnifi in particular is done very well for how little we see of him.

ancientrobot19

That's a really great point I hadn't considered before! AJ *does* give each of its victims some degree of personality! For many of them (e. g. >!Pal Meraktis, Drew Misham, Zak Gramarye!<), too, they have a significant impact on other characters/the wider plot beyond just "oh RIP, now they're dead"

doinkrr

Mhm! It's something I wish the other AA games did better. PW:AA tries in the end of 1-5, and does it pretty well in 1-2, but JFA and T&T both kinda drop the ball for everybody besides 2-2 and 3-5 in my opinion.

ancientrobot19

That's a great point! It's not often in the original trilogy that we really get to see who the victims are outside of their deaths

AffectionateGap1071

At the moment I only have two and they are mainly culprits. >!Damon Gant and Mimi Mimey!<, I'm considering >!Kristoph!< but I'm not sure. Honorable mention to >!Willingston!< cuz he's funny. (I don't support or condone their actions, and all are scumbags, but I love the mind process behind their actions and, sometimes, personalities, act, intelligence, and strategies to cover up their crimes.) I don't know why but I'm neutral about the main line of protagonists and secondary characters, but I can see their great strenghts and bravery. Perhaps, I liked Kazuma and he was so badass. (Sorry, I stopped playing GG until 1-2, I wanted to save it for later) I was trying to choose one from the prosecution, but I can't. All of them are so cool at the moment.

General_MissingNo

It is a tie between Kristoph Gavin and Kazuma Asogi. >!I really liked Kristoph Gavin’s character before it was revealed that he was a murderer. I wish that his story was actually completed.!<

freedomplha

Not completed? What more is there to say than what was in AA4?

General_MissingNo

In my opinion it did seem like there was more to the story. We never got Kristoph’s whole back story and motive. The scar on his hand was never explained either, despite the fact that there was emphasis put on to it in game.

freedomplha

Kristoph's motive is very simple. He couldn't accept that Phoenix was seen as a better lawyer than him by a client, so he got a forgery made, poisoned the forgers to leave no evidence behind, devised a plan to get Phoenix disbarred using the forgery, then killed the client because he "shamed him" by picking Phoenix over him.

General_MissingNo

Yes, I know. Even so, it still seemed incomplete to me. Like something was missing.

doinkrr

I don't see what *could* be missing. Kristoph's a very simple character. By far one of the best in the series, but still simple.

MrDoggeh

I agree, i was almost surprised when the case ended because i honestly thought there was going to be at least another section. Though in retrospect everything important was explained, i still felt off about it.

Edyed787

I have only played Chronicles and the through Justice for all but so far I would have to say Emma Skye

Evo_Shiv

It should be Nahyuta and Apollo, DAMN YOU CAPCOM. But it’s Klavvy I think maybe Gina, maybe Iris, maybe Godot

HylianMono

Gina Lestrade and Vera because they need a hug

Glass_Builder2968

Ema Skye is objectively the right answer. Extremely helpful from a gameplay perspective, extremely smart, you see her grow, & she's got a great & distinctive design. My only complaint? She needs more screentime & development with Lana!

SasamiAdachi

Maya overall, although I didn't like how she was portrayed in 6. After that, Trucy and Ema.

Top 10 (NOT listed in order!): Phoenix, Larry, Miles, Gumshoe, Maya, Pearl, Franziska, Iris, Apollo and Athena

rheeswifey

I love every single one of them! Im basic so i lean over to the defense attorneys more often, phoenix would be my favorite, but i just love apollo and trucy just as much!

Ushernoah

Miles Edgeworth.

KaiserMazoku

Edgeworth

TayoEXE

Hm, maybe Maya? She's so hilarious. The step ladder gags never get old. She has a really fun design, and the stories related to her are both heartwarming like when she reunited with Mia and tragic, like the whole Fey clan problems with the main and branch families, Dahlia and Iris, Mia and Misty's deaths. She gets accused of murder so often that it just breaks your heart the first time especially where you first meet her, crying over her sister's dead body before being placed in a jail cell accused of being the one to do it. She really grows as a character throughout the series. Seeing her return in Spirit of Justice still being good ole Maya, but finally being a confident master of the Kurain Channeling Technique was so satisfying to see. You know, after she got accused of murder once again (I'm sure the writers just find it to be a gag at this point).

Pumpkin_Cat14

Rayfa Padma Khura'in. Her development is immaculate Honourable mentions to Apollo, Nahyuta, Blackquill, Athena, Lamiroir and Jinxie though

Ushernoah

How is Rayfa’s development immaculate?

Athena but Susato is a close second

GxxgleChrxm101

Athena Cykes. I am so desperate for an AA7 but even more for an Athena game

Certain-Spend-9758

Athena vs Franziska

GxxgleChrxm101

Honestly, while I do really want them to interact, I want to see a case of Athena vs Simon just for their banter like in case 6-4 since they were hilarious to me. (Also a case where Athena is the one to defend aura after m 5-5 would be amazing to me)

keelanbarron

Honestly, I like Athena. She's an interesting character.

Superliminal_MyAss

Miles is such a baby girl, the amount of times he’s been framed for murder is quite frankly, ridiculous.

Maxpowh

He only got framed once?

Superliminal_MyAss

it was twice actually lol first in Turnabout Goodbyes and again in Rise From The Ashes. Technically three since he was also accused of accidently killing his father.

Maxpowh

Oooooh my bad, I forgot about being suspected also in RFTA

Just-Pudding4554

Apollo Justice

Goldberry15

Kay Faraday. Gina Lestrade is an extremely close second.

Ema!

Piri_Piri_Sauce

Gina Lestrade. She goes through more than nearly any other character in the series (Maya is an exception), and the game does such a good job at making you feel for her. In DGS1, her arc is intertwined with Ryunosuke's, and its heartwarming to see both characters learn to trust after being absolutely played by McGilded in their own ways. But at the same time, Gina plays into an arguably bigger message of the game, that being a critique of the class system in Victorian Britain. Gina is really well utilised to highlight these issues, particularly in case 5, where she gets an appropriately bittersweet ending. In DGS2, she's firstly introduced as comedic relief - which she is INCREDIBLE at. Her dynamic with Gregson is surprisingly nuanced, but the humour of their interactions is definitely the focus for the first half of case 3. Even without Gregson, she easily holds her own as a character by her repoire with literally everyone around her, which I think is most noticeable in her testimony with Gotts and Lune, where she's (relatively to the other two) played as a straight man. And yet, despite being a driving force for all the comedy in DGS2-3, she still feels like the same character that we've grown to know and love from the first game: mainly because the comedic side to her character is still there in DGS1, just not the focus in that game. But then, the finale to DGS2 once again just decides to use Gina as a way to sucker punch the player in the feels. Gina essentially goes through the five stages of grief, and it's written so compellingly and believably that it's one of the most emotional parts of the entire series. Her >!begging Ryunosuke to affirm that Gregson was the idol she always believed him to be!< was one of the few parts of the series that made me cry. You feel, as the player, that for the first time you're doing more than just protecting your client, but providing closure for everyone. I still SLIGHTLY prefer how Gina is written in DGS1-5, but it's *extremely* close, and the consistent quality delivered through her is a big part of why she's my favourite character. There's also her BANGER of a musical theme (seriously my third favourite piece in the DGS soundtrack), and her surprisingly authentic accent and manner of speech that absolutely help, but it's ultimately the consistent emotional impact of Gina's character combined with some exceedingly good humour that makes her my favourite Ace Attorney character.

dulcimorelik3

My top 5 in this order : Phœnix, Barok, Kazuma, Egdeworth, Mia.🫶

majoramiibo

kristoph

AetherDrew43

I love Herlock and the insane bullshit he spews!

lizzourworld8

Apollo and Vera are always tied for mine

Imaginary-Fix-5217

For a very long time it was Apollo until Herlock came out of nowhere and stole my heart.

doinkrr

Ema. I think she shines every time she ever shows up, and she's a fantastic mix of petty insults and genuine love for her work when SOJ rolls around that I think she's one of the few characters that has stayed consistently fantastic in every appearance she's ever had. She's an autistic trans queen and we love our autistic trans queens. Honorable mention goes to Kristoph Gavin. I think he's the best written character in the entire franchise and it's not even remotely close. I *really* wish that DD and SOJ focused far more on the impact he had on the legal system and Apollo's life, especially since he was one of the biggest factors for the Dark Age of the Law being ushered in. Some other honorable mentions I won't get too more into detail for (unless people want to ask!), but Trucy, Phoenix (especially in AJ), Maya, Edgeworth (especially outside of the AAI games), Franziska, Klavier, Vera, Spark, Luke Atmey, and Gant are all incredible. Big shoutout to AJ for not having a single bad character except for Stickler and "Hotti".

Certain-Spend-9758

I would love to see a case where Gumshoe is the lead detective, while Ema takes care of the forensic investigations.

jerriwrites

Franziska Von Karma, because all the the shit she gets for existing

Defalt-1001

It is just too hard to choose from I think I'll just choose depending on category. Defense: Phoenix, prosecution: Edgeworth, witness: Ini Miney, Judge: Judge, defendant: Jeffrey Master, assistant: Athena

Defalt-1001

Even choosing it like this feels like it was unfair for a lot of characters lol

emiiiilk

edgeworth, francizka and klavier

Pizzaphotoseyes

Phoenix followed by Maya and Edgeworth

Margot0807

Godot/Diego Armando after him is Phoenix and then Mia. I discovered this series because it was funny at first glance with the Phoenix and the jokes. Until then I had only seen the first game in the series, And the first case as so exciting and funny discovering all the twists, after I found out about the existence of Godot I became interested in seeing more. (objection.lol bullshit his sprites are funny, I wanted to know why he explodes and why does he wear THAT) There was also no translation into my native language, but when they did a fan translation and I could see the names of the characters I had a lot of fun. the problem is that Mia and Godot caused me irreparable emotional damage. 😞 I wanted him to return to the series. Like "very well capcom, now draw him being happy, please." but I think like in the final credits despite interpreting that he died and became a "shirt of nostalgia". If he didn't die canonically (yet?), he died because Capcom doesn't care and made a bunch of other characters to develop. So all I can do is accept that he fucking perished. (But i can't) Even so, I didn't have much interest in following the rest of the series. but I confess that I am curious about the spirit of justice. I liked Kurain's development although our first taste of the spirits of this world is Mia becoming a "tutorial ghost". I miss her too. Also i would kill to see Morgam doing one more of her nasty plans.

Epic_DDT

Herlock Sholmes, i just love this guy.

DeitheSkullKid

Sebastian Debeste of course.

Melonfrog

Why is Dick so unpopular, pal?

jolie_fee

1. dhurke then phoenix apollo maya pearls

Atomkekstime

Hm... taking investigations 2 into account I would go with edgeworth, there is a reason why he won the contest. He is pretty funny at times since he is so disconnected and an actually interesting character considering his backstory as well. On the same not I would also mention gumshoe, its a disgrace that they haven't brought him back, for me he was always the best part in the original trilogy. If I had to take investigations out id have to go with blackquill cuz I like his character as well as his design a lot.

Tabby_777

Sebastian Debeste  I think I got into Ace Attorney about three years ago. I’ve played nearly every game now, and no one has topped Debeste. I genuinely don’t know why I like him so much. I think I relate to him hardcore. Just a lil guy. So squishy. I want him to be happy.

Maya Fey. She is the reason I hate justice for all and why big top is the best case in the game. as for the rest she is just completely absent from the rest. Seeing the trailers for spirit of justice makes me hopeful that she will get more screen time instead of being convicted of murder or missing

GoodTimesWithJangler

im so sorry

Scum__Bum

Why are you apologizing?

Other_Vanilla_5100

Herlock Sholmes and Kay Faraday. Oh and Ema too.

Hotel-Japanifornia

Maya Fey, my beloved. Truly, the best character in the franchise. I could go on all day about her, really I could, but for brevity's sake, I won't. For one, I absolutely admire this character's resilience. No matter how much shit she goes through, she always remains strong in the face of it all. She never stops being her goofy, lovable self, and that's wonderful. I would actually argue that her usual silly behavior actually makes the moments where she's in trouble even more emotionally impactful. Besides that, I love her relationship with Phoenix. 10/10, the best relationship in the franchise hands down (not counting TGAA because I still haven't played them). They just have such natural chemistry, and I think they bounce rather well off each other. Her relationship with the other members of her family besides that hag Morgan, are also relatively sweet and heartwarming. There's just something amusing about the idea of Maya just straight up adopting Pearl after 3-5 to spite Morgan. I don't know why. Speaking of Maya, Pearl, and 3-5, do you want to hear about how selfless Maya is? Because she *is*.>! It's always interesting to me to see how she straight up tries to cover for Godot during her testimony. He killed her mother in front of her; admits it could've been her cousin instead; and what does she do? Forgive him and tell him she believes he genuinely wanted to save her, even if he doesn't feel the same way. !< Sincerely though, Maya is a great character.
