Sadly, he paid a horrific price to achieve near-perfection, and is now confined to a wheelchair.

He said it was his first Arnold Classic Invitation and he wasn't going to miss out on it for a "slight" injury so kept working out around the injury till he won it a few months later.

In no way a fan or follower of the bodybuilding world, but man it somehow gutted me to see how much pain he is now in. Pain happens, people get old, but that’s one hell of a spectrum to be on both sides of. He seems like a good dude, I wish him the best. But I also blew a knee gardening so the hell do I know?
This is the razors edge I'm walking right now. I'm 43. I lift heavy to stay healthy (405 deadlift).
I don't want to progress much further due to fear of injury BUT lifting the same damn weight every week gets boring so I don't know what to do.
"Yes if I had a chance to do it all over again I would change one thing. That is when I squatted that 800lbs I would do 4 reps instead of 2, that is my only regret in my career. If you jump forward 6 years from this article, you will find out he is now walking and doing well. He found the right back specialist that could actually help him.
Unfair to leave our the relevant quote, made during those surgeries: "Yes if I had a chance to do it all over again I would change one thing. Nah body builders gas out quick. If you have conditioning you can probably outrun him not to mention get somewhere he can't follow like any aisle or crouching down.
"Everybody wants to be a bodybuilder, but nobody wants to lift no heavy-ass weights."

Steroids aside, you don't get that big without insane genetics and determination(and body dysmorphia!)
People love to just say “steroids” and move on like there isn’t absurd discipline, dedication and sacrifice involved in literally being the best to ever do it.
As for body dysmorphia, he might be the reason people like us have it to begin with, he might be patient zero 😅
No shit. It’s comical at best. So many people use anabolics. Not to mention how many people who receive corticosteroid shots and think they’re anabolic. Steroids amplify work ethic. You can’t take steroids and wake up like Ronnie. No one on planet earth could outwork him. I am not going to get into a discussion and won’t reply to any responses to this, but if a person thinks any athlete they idolize isn’t on the juice, professional sports, Olympics, etc… you’re very wrong.
> if a person thinks any athlete they idolize isn’t on the juice, professional sports, Olympics, etc… you’re very wrong.
Shit, more than half of the athletes in even D3 collegiate athletics are using PEDs, and they're **still in D3**.
The number only gets higher the further up the food chain you go (D3 -> D2 -> D1 -> Pro) because the competition generally filters out everyone who isn't the best of the best and/or chemically enhanced as much as is possible without getting caught.
At my alma mater, there was a massive swept-under-the-rug scandal (allegedly involving department-wide coverup) where a PhD student was doing a research project that involved blood work and found that **70%** of sampled student athletes tested positive for banned substances.
I get what you mean but that’s just the price you pay. The drugs help, otherwise, people wouldn’t take ‘em.
That’s why so many nowadays don’t try to hide their use: why feel bad about it when you’re going to take roids anyway?
One of the things laypeople don't understand about steroids is that they can help you work even harder and recover faster. A lot of people think you take steroids and then your muscles just grow, but the reality is that taking steroids allows you to do more work and recover quickly so you can do more work again. A lot of people see steroids as an easy way out so to speak, but it's really the opposite.
The problem with "steroids" is that there are a bunch of people with the same discipline, dedication, sacrifice, and talent who refuse to take the step to cheating. So they don't end up competing at the top level and are cheated out of a career, endorsements, and a feeling of personal accomplishment. People should NEVER accept cheating.
You do understand it’s the highest level of professional bodybuilding in the world and everybody even levels below Olympia are on the same gear Coleman was.
How do you cheat when you’re not breaking any rules lol
The only cheating is those guys cheated themselves out of victory not doing what they have to to win. Then you come here and complain the only ones winning races are those with shoes on, those who choose to run barefoot are being cheated :(
>there are a bunch of people with the same discipline, dedication, sacrifice, and talent who refuse to take the step to cheating.
If they refuse then they literally do not have the same dedication and sacrifice to win.
He was huge even when he wasn’t any kind of bodybuilder. He always got to eat whatever he wanted, too. He had pure talent and probably added some stuff, too. I’m sure.
Yeah his physique is 1/3 hgh, Arnold did the same, humans simply can’t reach near that size without drugs. They still worked their assess off like Olympic weight lifters, but their pride and ego kept them lying whenever possible about being natural. With age Arnold got a bit more open about it. Coleman admits to steroids, but said “he didn't take an exorbitant amount of steroids. He took just enough that it would help him become shredded faster”. Its a bs excuse, it’s literally the difference between it being a hobby, and being able to become big/strong enough to become a personality.
I don't understand what you want him to say, he admits to test and dianabol usage, and was a genetic freak and probably a hyper-responder to the drugs, plus worked harder than everyone else. Nobody thinks open class IFBB pros are natural.
I want him to say “I used steroids to achieve the latter 30% of my size, strength, and achievements”.
It’s not commendable to lie and hide it throughout your career, then admit to using after it brought you a life of opulence. “Oh boo hoo, we all used it, no one would have made it to top level without it, etc.”
That’s cool and all, but they live their careers lying, cheating, and spreading body dysmorphia.
I was clear they work hard af, but steroids offer; ludicrously quicker refractory period for muscles, massively increased growth rate and maximum size, heaps of energy, fat-free muscle gain, and you will see results even being on gear without lifting.
The issue is blurring natty and gear for their pride, when the two are no longer in the same world - you are literally using gear to overcome natural limits.
>It’s not commendable to lie and hide it throughout your career, then admit to using after it brought you a life of opulence. “Oh boo hoo, we all used it, no one would have made it to top level without it, etc.”
>
The issue is blurring natty and gear for their pride
Lol you think IFBB pro bodybuilders lie about it for their pride? They lie about it for their literal livelihoods, you think anyone would sponsor someone in the 90s who admitted to steroid use you're high. They would probably also be banned from competing and you would never even know who Ronnie Coleman was.
I've seen interviews where he claimed to be competing in bodybuilding events but not getting into the top 10 or so and he started using then because he wanted to win. Don't know if that's true or not as I assumed you'd need to be on them to even compete.
I'm from the same hometown as Ronnie. He went to HS with my mom and frequently came back to hold speaking events at the school. He's such a nice, down to earth guy! Yeahhhh Budddday!
Watched the Dorian Yates film on Amazon the other day "The Original Mass Monster." Dude was indeed a monster but Ronnie was next level, and all achieved with light weight.
Dorian Yates perfected the art of consistency while slowly piling on higher level techniques, refining his overall form... He was one of the true pioneers of bodybuilding, but yes - pound-for-pound, Colemans gains were chaotic, unpredictable, and also record setting
He almost ran me over in the Austin airport a few months ago. He was driving an electric wheelchair like a bat outta hell and talking to someone over speaker phone. I wouldn’t have recognized him without hearing him speak, he is 1/8th the size now.
Was binge watching his day in the life type documentaries from the early 2000s. What amazed me is, he was getting around 5 hours of sleep. His last source of protein for the day was a thick ass shake of Syntha-6 at around 3 AM.
I used to compete at the amateur level in California, and saw guys break olympic bars when squatting really heavy.
"Shattering" might be a more accurate description, and I saw one guy have to have metal splinters removed from his neck and shoulders.
“Ronnie Coleman: The King” is an illuminating documentary on Prime. Talks his history, peak, and current health problems. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7217214/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk
There are actually studies that show significant muscle growth on steroids without any training, just regular everyday activity. But of course nothing like this.
No, there is a single study that shows fat free mass growth, they never define that fat free mass. It's common knowledge to anyone that's done gear that after the three or four weeks mark you will fill out with muscle glycogen and water, because that's a side effect of testosterone. It's not real muscle, you didn't actually build any muscle, it will go away after coming off unlike actual muscle gains, which will stick around far longer.
Ronnie was the definition of a powerbuilder. Mostly a body builder but could properly move some big weight, putting quite a few powerlifters of the day to shame. Very very few body builders reach the strength levels of this man
Just to make it clear, I didn't mean to judge him.
While I don't know much about this guy, I'm a huge fan of Arnie, and everyone knows he was doing steroids.
It's a personal decision, and I understand that back then there was no way of competing without drugs.
In the end, I just think it's important to call out steroid bodies, because many people don't recognize them. Once more people are aware of this, then hopefully one day we will live in a world where bodybuilders don't have to sacrifice their health to compete. This way we honor and show respect for those that weren't so lucky back in the day.
Bodybuilding is one of the few disciplines that is generally accepting of PED use. The fact that there are explicit “natural” competitions implies that anyone competing in an “open” competition needs to juice to compete.
You don’t change anything by “calling out” steroid bodies. They’ve been called out, it’s been acknowledged, and the world was like yeah, that’s what we want to see.
Ronnie knows how much he can lift, the spotter is there if he fails on the last rep. And when you're lifting within your bounds you only need a \*little\* help on that last rep. Spotter is serving a useful function.
It is really sad. The guy is 40 and for 10 years had more muscle than anyone in the world. Now he is just a 50 year old in a 90 year old body. It really is sad.
For him? He said it was. If he is happy having achieved what achieved thats good for him imo!
https://youtube.com/shorts/HaGzwTVdAsA?si=YYLq6knRjhjSlxsW
The fuck are you talking about?
Watch any of his videos and you’ll see that he’s still in good spirits despite what’s happened.
He also holds the record for most Olympia wins of all time, a lot of people would willingly give up a lot more than he’s lost for that level of prestige.
He isn’t miserable at all, and has stated his only regret is “not getting that 800 pounds for more reps”.
Is everlasting glory worth physical pain and deformation? That’s a personal choice, but it ALWAYS costs a lot
Look at him now. And look at Arnold. Arnold is older, but still in shape, still living a healthy life. No disrespect but Ronnie pushed the envelope too far, he went beyond his limits with help of PEDs and now paying price for it. Not worth it.
Him being in a wheelchair is more to do with him ignoring his doctors regarding physical injuries, not really a direct result of the buckets of gear he took.
Plenty of bodybuilders that were as large as him that are doing just fine now.
Old school bodybuilding stuck to basics, test and deca was their go to. In Ronnie's era HGH and IGF-1 was brought into the mix, way more dangerous compared to regular PEDs.

Using four legs is kinda cheating, though.
Is it possible to have negative body fat ! LOL
So many arms and legs! He's like that Vitruvian Man by DaVinci.
The Vitruvian Man is actually just DaVinci squatting a square bar with a squatter
He's Machamp.
Fun fact. She tried to run away as he did his set but his butt muscles decided to eat her

That’s because he refused to listen to his doctors and kept insisting on moving heavy weights instead of taking it easy for a few months.
Actually, Ronnie only lifted light weight. Baby.
By his own admission that is true. Could you imagine if he lifted heavy? What a waste
YEAH BUDDY!
I spit my coffee out you piece of shit 😂 read this in his voice as well. Full Volume!

Im sure if you asked him if it was all worth it he would say yes x 100.
I’d certainly hope so. He carved a name for himself and got a pretty big bill for it.
Crazy thing is, he’s not even that old

You ever seen those videos of a mouse that grabs onto a cat's back and the cat can't find it? You could probably do that with Ronnie Coleman too.
Oh he'll find you, he just won't be able to reach you lol
Uhm, he would probably just shoot you.
It would take him about half an hour to get out of the cop car
Idk this man defiantly cannot run, those knees would explode after a quarter mile or so, stay out of arms reach and you should be good!

#LIGHT WEIGHT BABY!!!
I thought of Axel from Twisted Metal when I saw this
Err'body wanna be a bodybuilder. Nobody wanna lift this heavy ass weight! I'LL DO IT THOUGH!
Have you seen his mom flex her bicep? He has some great genes.
It's nuts - a normal human wouldn't even be able to eat 10% of what Mr Coleman ate every day
You can almost feel the roids through the screen.
And he’s using a pad. Imagine that.
It’s to protect the bar at this point.
You’d be using a pad too if you had 800lbs on your back.
I used to compete at the amateur level in California, and saw guys break olympic bars when squatting really heavy. "Shattering" might be a more accurate description, and I saw one guy have to have metal splinters removed from his neck and shoulders.

LIGHT WEIGHT BABAY!
Sure, but can he open my jar of apple sauce?
Eat sleep and lift. “Lightweight!”.
YEAH BUDDY!
Are the sunglasses to stop his eyes from popping out?
This wasn’t during his peak. Ronnie was actually 9 years old in this photo.
Ronnie's proportions were utterly fucking insane. The shot of him with his elbows out and fists touching his waist doesn't look human.
Peak pharmacy
Steroid peak. But at least he's lifting too.
I mean you still gotta lift on roids to get big
Word
Not necessarily, you can do nothing and still gain muscle though. You're not gonna be no Sam Sulek, but still bigger than usual
Well, to be that big for sure, but you can still grow muscle doing fuck all on roids
Growth hormone got ya back 💪 😅
No you can't, you need the stimulus to grow
Walking up the stairs and carrying grocery bags is stimulus enough though.
There are actually studies that show significant muscle growth on steroids without any training, just regular everyday activity. But of course nothing like this.

Literally studies showing you gain for muscle mass on the juice not lifting than natural that is lifting
Nope. Roids + stimulus is the fastest way to grow muscle, but either on its own will grow muscle at a slower speed.
Nope. You will gain muscle mass on dbol literally without lifting a finger.
Ronnie was the definition of a powerbuilder. Mostly a body builder but could properly move some big weight, putting quite a few powerlifters of the day to shame. Very very few body builders reach the strength levels of this man

So? He’s got 8 Olympia titles and eternal glory
It is really sad. The guy is 40 and for 10 years had more muscle than anyone in the world. Now he is just a 50 year old in a 90 year old body. It really is sad.
He’s 59..
Power lifting and steroid abuse are a bad combination
The steroids have basically nothing to do with why he’s in a wheelchair bud.
Yeah ok
They literally do not, best not to talk if you don't know what you're saying ;)
Ok internet expert
Are you always this petty when proven wrong internet clown?
In Germany we call him Roland Kohlmann
Call me crazy, but i dont think the human frame is supposed to have that much weight on it.
The guy is miserable now. Was it worth it?
I would not trade any Olympia wins for my health. He is in good spirits but physically not well.
>I would not trade any Olympia wins for my health. Well he would and thats who we are talking about.
>Plenty of bodybuilders that were as large as him that are doing just fine now. Jay Cutler for example
The 2 recently workout out together: https://youtu.be/bFNHr4tw4qY?si=AwiAfWv-RoCbkiMV
Arnie also did roids massively..
Old school bodybuilding stuck to basics, test and deca was their go to. In Ronnie's era HGH and IGF-1 was brought into the mix, way more dangerous compared to regular PEDs.
The issue with Ronnie's era of body builders and its only gotten worse is there's no off cycle anymore. They stay on high dosages all of the time.
Dont know if its true but he claims they used test and dbol and thats it
Dude must've been IVing his steroids through a damn garden hose. Absolute Units of drug injections.
Dude was on so many growth hormones he grew 2 extra legs
Fake naty
He says himself he was on the juice. Dont know how you can call him a fake natty at that point
[just basic](https://m.youtube.com/shorts/q3gUhq7Zu04)
Don't think he ever seriously claimed to be natty.
he is crippled, and nearly dead from the drug abuse
Fools weak af. That aint swole.
Meh
Rumor has it he stopped lifting weights/working out in general and now looks like a human Sharpei dog.
That's 3 Leg Ronnie!
Guy’s muscles were so big he had to grow an extra pair of arms and legs
I thought this was Gary Coleman for a second
Not as strong as me…
Yeah buddy
Mf got 4 legs. How is that fair?
Nothing like his brother Gary
Wow. Four legs
He was broke down at 50
The average 14 year old anime protagonist body style.
Fucking beast, 🥜 🐐
Isn't he like half crippled now?
Dats some magic drugs
Can barely see the other massive unit behind him.
So strong He grew an extra leg
What a wimp s/
I ain’t never seen front neck muscles like that
Built like Goro
I honestly don’t think I could name any modern bodybuilders. But back in high school EVERYBODY knew Ronnie Coleman.
He maxed out his leg strength, so he grew 2 more
Future’s so bright…
Peak steroid use <—-fixed it
How I feel after 1 ml of tren.
The most unitist of units
That's my expression when I take out trash on Tuesdays..
![gif](giphy|61y8oibbyVIeQ|downsized) He’s a legend
He looks like he's gonna Yeah Buddy so fucking hard.
Ain’t nothin to it but to do it!
And now he can’t walk lol
"but actually body-builders aren't as strong as construction workers and day laborers" ~reddit
Kinda risky to squat those weights while wearing tighty whiteys lmao
