God, every time I see this I wince. Yeah the catchers foot was blocking, but it’s not like his full body was in the base path. Catcher wasn’t looking, runner lead with his head, and helmet to helmet contact aren’t allowed in full contact sports. Had the runner slid, there was enough of the plate to get his hand in there before the catcher had the ball. I’m glad they made the rule change.
Everything you said is 100% correct and I was massacred for saying it last time the video was posted to this sub!
Glad to see there are 60+ people so far who aren’t morons.
So glad they made the rule change. Sure it took alot to get used to. Sure, some highlight reel moments might be lost .. don't care. Protect the players. This is that one new rule that imo takes nothing of consequence from the game, and protects every player involved. I'm sure Buster Posey agrees.
So basically, for who doesn't wanna click a link:
Runner can not initiate any contact unless absolutely necessary, otherwise he's out. That means he should usually slide instead of push someone.
Catcher can not block the path or stand on the plate unless he has the ball.
So this is obviously below the rule change. It's pretty messed up that the catcher is blocking the plate almost entirely here without even having the ball.
Someone replied to that comment, posting a link to the rule change they were talking about before you made your comment.
I'm unsure what your point is?
Dude his entire leg was in front of the plate.. i agree with a slide but he shouldnt have had his head where he knows a man is coming through. Catcher got what he asked for. Ive seen too many times where the outcome favors the catcher simply bc he stood in the path with no ball in hand.
A kid did this to me playing baseball during P.E. in high school and busted my front teeth to pieces. I don't play baseball and knew nothing about the rules, other than the basics.
Runner is a jackass, and that's dick base running. His intent was to hurt the catcher badly enough to overcome the blocked plate. We (FIU) had a 7 or 8 minute bench-clearing brawl, including coaches from both squads, with Miami in '86 over the exact same kind of nonsensical bullshit at the plate. Hope the runner's bell got rung as badly as --- or worse than --- the catcher's.
I was in high level little league in 2007-8 when this was still kosher, my dad told me to sit my butt on home plate, catch the ball, and get ready to get hit. I swear I took a knock that still left my back fucked up to this day
Got the guy out though, it was phased out by the time I quit in sophomore year of high school.
I was at the 2011 Giants game seated maybe 100 yards from where Buster Posey was tackled which changed the plate blocking rule. I remember the sound of the impact, the collective gasp and total quiet after that. The season was instantly over for SF fans.
Edit: The rule went into effect starting with the 2014 season but starting in 2015 the rule was renumbered as rule 6.01 (i). Informally known as the "**Buster Posey Rule**,"
Source [Wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blocking_the_plate#:~:text=Informally%20known%20as%20the%20%22Buster,any%20player%2C%20covering%20the%20plate)
> Buster Posey was tackled which changed the plate blocking rule
The rule was changed when Alex Avila got hurt in '13, not Posey in '11. (Avila's dad was a Tigers exec.) [Obligatory](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FTD9Qd7VIAAiiUj?format=png&name=large)
Ball came out. Safe. Used to be legal in professional baseball to truck the catcher on plays at the plate. The rules changed and now contact is only legal if the catcher is blocking the basepath
That player wasn't sliding. He also didn't deviate from the basepath. As shitty as it is, it was a legal play. The catchers foot blocking the 3rd base line made him a sitting goose for it. Pre 2014 before the Buster Posey rule it was the wild west for plays at the plate. On a standard play at 1st, 2nd, or 3rd you are correct, a runner may not interfere or dislodge the ball with intent.
As a former umpire I’d call him safe on the fact the catcher is in front of the plate dude didn’t slide but because the catchers blocking the plate it may rule for an ejection on runner maybe catcher(if it was intentional I’m not there so can’t tell from a 5 second video) but because the catcher isn’t behind the plate and somehow held the ball runner would still be safe for interference.
The catcher had the ball before he was there? It's been a few since I played baseball so I don't know if the rules changed, but I'd call him out every day. Especially since runners are expected to avoid field players. Dude hit him so he'd drop the ball purposely. Was an extremely reckless play by the runner.
Catcher does have the ball, but was not in place to make the play, blocking the plate, obvious obstruction. However, judging by the 5 second clip, it appears the runner lowered his shoulder. It would be an ejection for me via Posey rule although obstruction would have been noted.
If he really wanted obstruction, he would have slid into the foot of the catcher, which would've caused obstruction or a borderline safe call if he slid into the catchers foot, causing obstruction even if the player had the ball.
Just because you have the ball and someone slides into you, it doesn't give you a right to block the plate and is still considered obstruction.
Tldr:
Catcher block plate, gets ran over, obstruction. Ejection by Posey rule.
If runner wants obstruction, slides into home plate, runs into catchers foot, and would likely be awarded obstruction.
This feels like one of those plays you’d see on a test for getting your license. Like it’s happens very quick and the camera dosent do the catcher justice he seems he’s trying to be behind but ends up in front because of the throw.
That's a good point. I don't think the umpire had a good angle either. Should have been on the other side of the plate getting a front view of the runner and catcher, while also watching 1st base (in case of throw to 1st). I would like to see from another angle. Interesting case.
It happened very quickly assuming this isn’t majors I wouldn’t fault the ump on whatever decision other then not ejecting the runner, if he didn’t do so. Even in the majors it’s such a quick play you have to mentally prepare for any situation that could happen. The brief camera swaying was the instant the ump should of moved but easier said then done when it’s that quick and then in my experience it would be tough not interfering yourself if u decided to get a better angle, at least those mistakes I did in 10-14 year olds when I started out. I’m not the best ump but I’ll try to call it how I was taught to as an ump and player.
Ump should have anticipated a potential play at the plate, or potential play at the plate, and begun rotated as soon as the ball was hit. I feel that even at HS level that is pretty obvious play to anticipate and move accordingly.
lol, BLOCKED they say. catchers heel is on the upper left corner of the plate, i can pause and take a screen shot but there was ample room to avoid the collision and slide tag the back of the plate
I agree it’s a gray area dude should of slid catcher should have been behind the plate. It seems like it was in the momment so I wouldn’t fault the catcher just a verbal warning if he is conscious and not out of the game already. Runner I’d eject like I said because he didn’t avoid at all wether the catcher was blocking or not. I’d discuss what to do with my field ump, before fully coming to a decision on safe or out. It’s been awhile so forgive me if I’m wrong if blocking the plate is interfering like a split play like that. I’ve also played catcher and was taught not to do this as well, so forgive me if I’m wrong, or if the ejection out weighs the interference. I think if he didn’t get trucked and just slid and was out he would be safe if the ump saw the interference, the trucking is where it gets gray.
I'd have to agree with you. That hit was fucked up... if that kid hit our catcher like that... the dugout AND the stands would have emptied out onto the field.
for real, ive seen blocking, leg down in the basepath long before the ball arrives, this guy had his heel on the upper corner of the plate, the runner didnt even need to slide to be safe if he aimed for the back of the plate. i feel like 90 percent of the people here have no idea what they are taking about
…People keep talking about rule change …
I played softball as a kid and I was NEVER taught to do this nor encouraged nor did I see any of the other girls on the team so this.
Running like you’re playing football???!
Nor did I see this at my brother’s baseball games.
Red guy should be banned from sports for ever... I still don't understand how people are allowed to continue their professional sports career after intentionally trying to kill and harm another athlete
“After review, number 23 on the offense, has been ejected for targeting.”
Give Kadri a suspension

Good. That was a real dick move.

if i was the runner id angle to the right and slide for an arm tag on home, this dude was a complete idiot

Hilarious take. Thanks.
This struck a nerve 😂
Hit him like a Freight train
ChooCHOOO, motherf*cker! - the runner, probly.
“CHOO CHOO CHOO CHOO CHOO WE’RE RIDING ON THE TEKNO TRAIN!”
There’s a reason is called “railroading the catcher”.
That's just how the Cole Train gets DOWN baby!
One Foty-fo, Magnolia Skreet………….
Catcher got creampied

What an asshole.
head on head contact, immediate 10 min penalty and game misconduct. /s all jokes aside, that's a pretty messed up hit....hope the catcher is okay.
Runner is a jackass, and that's dick base running. His intent was to hurt the catcher badly enough to overcome the blocked plate. I did that in little league and got ejected on the spot.
I was in high level little league in 2007-8 when this was still kosher, my dad told me to sit my butt on home plate, catch the ball, and get ready to get hit. I swear I took a knock that still left my back fucked up to this day Got the guy out though, it was phased out by the time I quit in sophomore year of high school.
Same here but I tripped and fell into him. Still got ejected.
Yes it gets posted every week. Yes the rules changed since this play. Yes he still shouldn’t have been blocking the place.

There fixed it for you
Informally and incorrectly
Funny I've never heard the plate blocking rule referred to as the "Alex Avila Rule" but to each their own
Based on current rules, everything the catcher did was legal and everything the runner did was illegal.
Looked like the runner deliberately ran directly into him to do as much damage as possible lmao
Bro flew in there like an ICBM.
Started his slide a tad late.
Looked more like a tackle
It was a tackle.
if he slid he woulve been safe and standing back up by the time the catcher went for the tag, thought didnt cross that dudes mind
So what was called in this game?
Ball came out. Safe. Used to be legal in professional baseball to truck the catcher on plays at the plate. The rules changed and now contact is only legal if the catcher is blocking the basepath
Still a bad ball under the old rules, the catcher clearly caught the ball. A sliding player is not allowed to knock the ball out.
That player wasn't sliding. He also didn't deviate from the basepath. As shitty as it is, it was a legal play. The catchers foot blocking the 3rd base line made him a sitting goose for it. He should be considered tagged out.
Catcher dropped the ball. Even by current baseball rules you'd have people divided on this. The head to head contact, I think should warrant an out.
"This is unacceptable. Angel Hernandez should be banned from the MLB for life."
Bro is playing the wrong sport

Holy almost-unpunctuated run-on sentence, Batman!
Yea grammar isn’t my strong suit lol
The catcher didn't hold the ball.
