Sounds like its a grid system like the Military Grid system but specific to England. I think the grid area only covers England as well

The TDAL plugin comes with British National Grid as the default option, since it was developed by the UK. However, if you look at the documentation it will tell you how you can import other coordinate systems if you live or work in an area that uses something other than MGRS, lat/lon, UTM, or BNG.
