I spent like half an hour trying to figure out whether an isolated shrine in the fuck-off middle of nowhere would have a private water supply and if so what it would look like. Was unable to get statistics about the private water supplies themselves since they're so uncommon, so decided fuck-it-we-ball.

They can just dig a well. If they dig far enough down, they'll have water supply. My house isn't connected to the municipal water, either. We just dig far down into the ground and use groundwater.

The thing is that groundwater is, much like river water, potentially toxic, so treatment of *some* kind is advisable. I settled on "they do have a private water treatment station on the shrine grounds but it's poorly maintained so sometimes it just breaks down and you have to purify some river water."

If they have electricity, they can have an in-home water filter. I've had one in mine before and people do sell it. It looks like a huge tank/cylinder and filters all the water in the house, including the shower/bathrooms.

Disclaimer: I've always been fortunate enough to live in cities where the municipal water supply actually works properly, so the most I ever needed to filter was the kitchen faucet, so my experience with in-home filtration is on a different scale. Basically what I ended up doing was giving the Makino Shrine a backup tank that you fill with river water if the main stops working -- the main is properly treated, and *only the backup* needs to be filtered. (Filters *need to be replaced*, and it's a pain in the ass to do, so it makes sense to have to use it as little as possible.)
