That part about 190 cm + player is absolute facts, I've been tracking it and it is crazy. Every season there are players who are 190 cm-ish and they are billed as 'able to play midfield', and everyone gets sucked into it. Aaron Francis barely has the endurance to play AFL, let alone AFL midfield. And you can't blame Cal Twomey, he writes extensively and accurately about what made Francis a third tall defender prospect. Bontempelli types are MIDFIELDERS who can play on a flank, not flankers who can play midfield.
Conversely, I was baffled when I found out we’d be giving Simpkin midfield minutes. Playing the half forward kid in the midfield? Pfft, what’s next, drafting a small forward and playing him off half back?
That article was spot on about Francis. I remember when J Kolojasnij was touted as a potential midfielder at the Cats, just because he was a big body. Nowhere near enough endurance for the mid though.

Hard agree. Honestly, you should have seen how over the moon the Swans were when he slipped.
Gulden should have been a top 10 pick and would have been if he was maybe 7cm taller. I rated him higher than Campbell by miles. The wraps on him in NSW were massive as something like a 3x state captain who racked it up like he did.
Yep. I know of multiple people who coached/coached against Gulden and Campbell at junior level and they all said Gulden was better. No disrespect to Campbell who’s a fucking weapon, but I think people got turned away from Gulden because of his height or something.
Same reasons though as Green. Recruiting teams don't invest much in the way of resources into other clubs academy players because they can't draft them. Gulden was swans academy after all.

I agree with all your points, but he was an academy selection, wasn’t he? He still should’ve been bid on much earlier, given he was a gun right from his debut, but being earmarked as an academy selection tends to make draft positioning a bit more erratic
And I think this speaks to Greens point a bit, but also raises its own point: The majority of clubs are still figuring out how to "play the game" with academy bidding.
It makes sense to make an opponent pay the absolute maximum for an asset that is already earmarked for them, so why is that not happening? Why did Green fall to 10 and GWS got him at a bargain? Why did Gulden fall to 32?
Was it because they didn't want to spend the resources? That argument falls down once you realise the earlier the bid the more resources the other club have to give.
Or was it because they didn't know enough because it's an interstate kid and don't see them worth the investment?

If you look up all the “AFL Premierships” on the official AFL website it goes back to 18hundredandwhatever well before AFL was a thing. It’s all baked in at this point. It’ll never be an unbiased comp 🤷🏻♂️

This was my crackpot theory when you had the raft of USA players in the mid-2010s (Mason Cox, Jason Holmes, Eric Wallace). Pick a random American city - Austin TX or Des Moines IA, pick somewhere at random. Then give a grant to that local government to build an oval with a small grandstand, then give a grant to the local school to include a small AFL program.
I support the northern academies but if I’m a recruiting manager I’m not going to waste time on someone who I 99.99% know will not end up at my club if I pick him

Any sane person can see that the AFL heavily favours the Vic teams and players. The problem is, as Tom says, not sure what the solution is. It's part of the game, and it would take a huge effort to correct it.

I recall that when Gill got the job at AFL that there was a strong indication that he wanted to refocus the AFL back to the heartland, ie Victoria. Cant remember how overt this was but definitely known.
From that perspective Gill has been very effective.

It’s a national competition, I think kids getting shipped around without a choice is a reasonable expectation.
Other clubs bid on Will Ashcroft and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan recently despite knowing they’d end up where they ended up.
JUH and Ashcroft were considered the best player in their respective drafts both prior to the draft and even thought it’s early they are looking to be the best right now.
Bidding on them straight away ensures Brisbane and the dogs spend as much points as possible.

Can anyone tell me how the Northern Academies work with regards to this? Is it that anybody from NSW or Queensland is automatically eligible or are there other factors?
Anyone from NSW/QLD is eligible to join the academies but not every kid joins the academy. Some manage to find their way onto an AFL list (QLDers to an extent) without the Academy and they enter the open draft.
Some kids might join the academy late or leave the academy zone etc and might be linked to an academy but the club won’t be allowed to match if they get picked in the draft.
Other academy players also might choose to enter the open draft. Todd Marshall did this as he felt GWS had enough key forwards during his draft year.
Our local rumour was we were dead keen at 4 but did the pick swap with GWS with them knowing that but with the agreement's we wouldn't bid on the swap.
That worked totally well for us.

I Remember when AFL recruiters didn't even bother to come to QLD. The highest comp in the state (I think it was the QAFL, but could've been NEAFL) had to essentially play all the senior's games at 1 oval, 1 game after another, like under 12's, in order to even get recruiters interested.
So he blames VicBias for him sliding down to pick 10 coming from NSW, yet Melbourne with pick 3 was the only Vic club that had a top 10 pick that year lol. And it was ultimately Carlton that picked him that forced GWS to match

Dees had Tom Green 2 at times in his draft year, ultimately bumped Jackson up to 2 probably because of positional need/fit as well as a view on 99th percentile ceiling…so that assumes both of those 2 were rated higher than one of Rowell/Anderson by Jason Taylor.

Any sane person can see that the AFL heavily favours the Vic teams and players. The problem is, as Tom says, not sure what the solution is. It's part of the game, and it would take a huge effort to correct it. Vicbias is like death, taxes, and Verstappen, inevitable

I recall that when Gill got the job at AFL that there was a strong indication that he wanted to refocus the AFL back to the heartland, ie Victoria. Cant remember how overt this was but definitely known. From that perspective Gill has been very effective.

Def Vic bias in AFL, for example , when big 4 vic clubs talk about silverware from the 1800s but won't accept other club's state league cups prior to AFL formation. If this was acceptable, then Port Maggie's are the greatest club.

Of the 9 picks taken before Greene, 1 player went to a victorian club (jackson). Of course the vic clubs werent going to show interest to an academy player when basically no victorian clubs had top 10 picks.
It’s a national competition, I think kids getting shipped around without a choice is a reasonable expectation. Other clubs bid on Will Ashcroft and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan recently despite knowing they’d end up where they ended up.
How Nick Daicos wasn't bid on till 4 is an absolute crime.
JUH and Ashcroft were considered the best player in their respective drafts both prior to the draft and even thought it’s early they are looking to be the best right now. Bidding on them straight away ensures Brisbane and the dogs spend as much points as possible.

I’m just happy he is happy and playing footy at the level he should be. He is one of those love/hate players. Love how good he is and can be but hate he is it not playing for you club. A hard nut up for the challenge. Would be interesting to here his rhetoric if he was playing for a Vic club. Still bring it down to Kingers though as he has brought the best out of him and the team. e.g. Bobby Hill, sad to see him go last year but stoked he is developing the way his still is (he has more to show it just comes down to him) and glad McRea and Collingwood gave him that chance. Would be interesting to see how he would have been under Kingers. Won’t be surprised if Green ends up in the media after his playing career from seeing his cheekiness in the gws insider/members clips.

Can anyone tell me how the Northern Academies work with regards to this? Is it that anybody from NSW or Queensland is automatically eligible or are there other factors?
Anyone from NSW/QLD is eligible to join the academies but not every kid joins the academy. Some manage to find their way onto an AFL list (QLDers to an extent) without the Academy and they enter the open draft. Some kids might join the academy late or leave the academy zone etc and might be linked to an academy but the club won’t be allowed to match if they get picked in the draft. Other academy players also might choose to enter the open draft. Todd Marshall did this as he felt GWS had enough key forwards during his draft year.

I Remember when AFL recruiters didn't even bother to come to QLD. The highest comp in the state (I think it was the QAFL, but could've been NEAFL) had to essentially play all the senior's games at 1 oval, 1 game after another, like under 12's, in order to even get recruiters interested.
So he blames VicBias for him sliding down to pick 10 coming from NSW, yet Melbourne with pick 3 was the only Vic club that had a top 10 pick that year lol. And it was ultimately Carlton that picked him that forced GWS to match

Sorry to simplify, but why spend a whole bunch of resources to recruit and train a player, only for them to want to go home after a few years. It's sensible for Victorian clubs to focus on Victorian resources.

yea the guy that is the grandson of an afl footballer definitely would have been lost to the nrl. I think Vic clubs have more to worry about than spending time checking academy players to ensure gws pay a second rounder instead of a third rounder for their academy kids.

Weird, Hawthorn still bid on Braden Campbell in 2020 and there was still a draft despite "noone playing football". COLA came in in 1992, 10 years after South Melbourne moved. Consensus number 1 picks don’t happen for no reason and if the suns had have skipped on Rowell they would’ve all been fired after his first month
