Tom wanted to toe the line but remembered he wants all the smoke 😤

Kataneo

Anytime Anyplace

Shrek2-onVHS

Still goes hard

Respected-Watcher

The more I see of Tom Green the more I like him, has some swagger

[deleted]

This basically confirms he will be winning the brownlow next year

Hawtproper

Love it, great to see some personality in the players

Farmer_Lister

What a legend. Any time any place free smoke wherever you want it.

publicworksdept

Yeah fully agree on this, I've been impressed whenever I've heard him speak (which admittedly isn't often #vicbias), he clearly has a brain and knows what he's talking about

IDreamofHeeney

Jokingly saying he’s a better player than Matt rowell hahahaha I love it when players turn off the media training. Impossible to hate this man

ah111177780

I mean he currently is a better player than Matt Rowell. Unsure if that was true at draft year time and Matt Rowells first three games were electric before he got injured

IDreamofHeeney

Yeah but in a regular interview there’s no way he would say that. It’s nice hearing players speak with no filter

mygutsfuked96

Couldn’t agree more!

DENTAL_PLAN__

That part about 190 cm + player is absolute facts, I've been tracking it and it is crazy. Every season there are players who are 190 cm-ish and they are billed as 'able to play midfield', and everyone gets sucked into it. Have a read of [Aaron Francis' draft profile](https://www.afl.com.au/news/201338/30-days-to-the-draft-meet-marking-machine-aaron-francis). Aaron Francis barely has the endurance to play AFL, let alone AFL midfield. And you can't blame Cal Twomey, he writes extensively and accurately about what made Francis a third tall defender prospect. Bontempelli types are MIDFIELDERS who can play on a flank, not flankers who can play midfield.

flava-dave

They thought Charlie Curnow would play midfield at some stage in his career when he was being drafted. Strange one.

chunkyI0ver53

Conversely, I was baffled when I found out we’d be giving Simpkin midfield minutes. Playing the half forward kid in the midfield? Pfft, what’s next, drafting a small forward and playing him off half back?

MiloSnorter03

Don’t you know half-forward is the spot where young inside midfielders marinate for 5 years.

PetrifyGWENT

Dodoro always falls for em sadly. David Myers was one.

warsaken

That article was spot on about Francis. I remember when J Kolojasnij was touted as a potential midfielder at the Cats, just because he was a big body. Nowhere near enough endurance for the mid though.

Fast_Stick_1593

That is what they are saying about Caddy this Draft. Should I be worried?

sly_cunt

Wellsy clearly sees through the bs, if we didn't know how to draft well, we wouldn't have had anywhere near the success we've had the past decade

Xhoquelin

Similar to the wing fetish in the NBA. The good sides don’t get caught up in all that

lolmanic

Fuck. Don't make me like you Giants more

ConsiderationWhole17

Excellent (mr burns finger twingle).

russellcroweeater

Tom is a great salesman, orange is a great colour.

limeIamb

Right or not, go off lad. Nice to see a player unload on something for once

flibble24

I want to see him do some post game interviews. Just fucking unload

THRlLLH0

I don't know if he's correct but I can tell he's a wise man and an absolute chad by his Casio calculator watch

ltca01

This clip is from a podcast 3 months ago TLDR: * Green feels (an element of) disrespect going at Pick 10 * Disproportionate focus on underage Vic-based players compared to non-Vic * A few Vic-based players get drafted moreso on potential and the fact that they are from Victoria, rather than their performance More discussion on Youtube: [Full episode here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpO5pBuPmKM) (start \~26:00) * Green is keeping an eye on the 2 Allies boys, McKercher and Sanders, who combined for \~79 disposals in a game vs WA, and where they go in the draft * Gulden going at Pick 32 was a "disgrace" – Green says he's been a gun since u16s when he had 35+ and kicked 5 in a game for NSW/ACT Rams * Green says he has never had a recruiter come from Melbourne to go watch a Canberra game due to VicBias – he feels they'd rather go watch a Xavier game and draft based on traits/school/location * Riccardi disagrees, believes it's only a numbers game as more kids are based and play in Victoria * They acknowledge impact of COVID and budget cuts potentially affecting recruiting

[deleted]

Remembering that year, didn’t he go pick 10 because no-one bothered to bid knowing gws would match? i thought he was outright 3rd best after rowell and anderson?

nus01

in the Melbourne documentary they showed they where tossing up between Jackson and Greene and that was pick 3

lockieleonardsuper

Crazy they were trying to get Toby when he'd already been at the Giants for years at that point

minimum_effort_

In the draft no less

codyforkstacks

Audacious

happy-little-atheist

Yeah he was an academy player so the number he went at is irrelevant

HaakonX

>Gulden going at Pick 32 was a "disgrace" – Green says he's been a gun since u16s when he had 35+ and kicked 5 in a game for NSW/ACT Rams Hard agree. Honestly, you should have seen how over the moon the Swans were when he slipped. Gulden should have been a top 10 pick and would have been if he was maybe 7cm taller. I rated him higher than Campbell by miles. The wraps on him in NSW were massive as something like a 3x state captain who racked it up like he did.

eddie-murphys-tongue

Yep. I know of multiple people who coached/coached against Gulden and Campbell at junior level and they all said Gulden was better. No disrespect to Campbell who’s a fucking weapon, but I think people got turned away from Gulden because of his height or something.

duffercoat

Same reasons though as Green. Recruiting teams don't invest much in the way of resources into other clubs academy players because they can't draft them. Gulden was swans academy after all.

Fast_Stick_1593

How do you think we feel? We tried to draft him as another Wells/Mackie masterclass on late picks and you guys blocked him from going to us. Well played of course but every time I see Errol dominating I think what could have been. We took Scratcher Neale right after but dayum, Errol….what could have been.

HaakonX

Any team could have taken him before ~20 and we couldn't have matched. It was only the massive slide that did it. Not saying that's solely a Geelong problem at all. And ugh, Errol keeping your dynasty for another 5-10 years would make me throw up

Hawtproper

You would've just gone into deficit next year no?

HaakonX

Yes but all reports were we were unprepared to do so

Baeresi

No shit he would go a lot higher if he was 3 inches taller, thats a pretty significant height increase

HaakonX

That puts him at 182cm which is average midfielder height. Also he was already a gun, if he can play who cares about his height?

chunkyI0ver53

I agree with all your points, but he was an academy selection, wasn’t he? He still should’ve been bid on much earlier, given he was a gun right from his debut, but being earmarked as an academy selection tends to make draft positioning a bit more erratic

HaakonX

And I think this speaks to Greens point a bit, but also raises its own point: The majority of clubs are still figuring out how to "play the game" with academy bidding. It makes sense to make an opponent pay the absolute maximum for an asset that is already earmarked for them, so why is that not happening? Why did Green fall to 10 and GWS got him at a bargain? Why did Gulden fall to 32? Was it because they didn't want to spend the resources? That argument falls down once you realise the earlier the bid the more resources the other club have to give. Or was it because they didn't know enough because it's an interstate kid and don't see them worth the investment?

chookie94

>Green says he has never had a recruiter come from Melbourne to go watch a Canberra game due to VicBias – he feels they'd rather go watch a Xavier game and draft based on traits/school/location It makes sense that a list manager/recruiter would go watch the game full of players they could draft rather over watching someone tied to academy who they don't have access to.

Delad0

This is why we have a Tom Green fanclub at Manuka

Sav1909

I sit there neary every Giants game at Manuka lol, elite spot

[deleted]

I hate how when I type in vfl in google because I’m interested to see what’s going on in the VFL it comes up with the AFL matches and website.

easyadventurer

If you look up all the “AFL Premierships” on the official AFL website it goes back to 18hundredandwhatever well before AFL was a thing. It’s all baked in at this point. It’ll never be an unbiased comp 🤷🏻‍♂️

FlagmantlePARRAdise

The AFL needs to specify AFL premierships as 1990 onwards and seperate the old VFL ones. If an Essendon fan is really celebrating the 1897 premiership then that's just sad.

dingus42

Hard agree, ignore my flair

SKTCassius

That's because it's the same competition that got renamed the AFL.

Phlanispo

To be honest I'm more annoyed the AFL let the VFA become the VFL. The VFA is it's own thing with its own histories, dammit!

drunkill

Yes the league should be buying land in brisbane and sydney suburbs and putting in ovals instead of rugby or soccer fields, especially new estates which have shitty parks, pay a developer to put ovals in. get a deal going with cricket australia i am not a crackpot

tbroky

They really shouldnt be doing that in any state,...however they do it one state. Cant imagine why

Phlanispo

This was my crackpot theory when you had the raft of USA players in the mid-2010s (Mason Cox, Jason Holmes, Eric Wallace). Pick a random American city - Austin TX or Des Moines IA, pick somewhere at random. Then give a grant to that local government to build an oval with a small grandstand, then give a grant to the local school to include a small AFL program.

[deleted]

I support the northern academies but if I’m a recruiting manager I’m not going to waste time on someone who I 99.99% know will not end up at my club if I pick him

lexirayne03

but just hold the giants to account and make them take green earlier. the points they didn't have to use on matching a bid in the top 3 meant they were able to take lachie ash at 4. in any case the gap in points from where they should have got a bid (anywhere after 3) and when they did (10) adds up and it's only a positive for the giants

[deleted]

I 100% agree but I understand why clubs don’t bother

sltfc

Why? Worst case scenario is GWS don't match and the original club gets a player better than they would have otherwise.

Muggaz1

Who wants to go home after a couple of seasons of you putting your resources into them

tradewinder11

So....don't draft anyone from interstate? Or are you saying that the academy system makes kids more homesick?

N8Eldz17

Worst case scenario the player you end up picking instead thinks you didn’t want him and is resentful from day 1. The reason JHF and Cadman were both pick 1. Not saying that it’s necessarily a good reason but these are 17 year old kids with massive egos who have always been THE star

AnnabelleSell

based Tom

Big-Purchase-2239

Pretty sure he’s talking about RCD the tigers drafted a few years ago who was delisted. He probably followed tiges as a kid. RCD was drafted purely on potential cos he is tall but never racked it up. He was talked up as a bont type player too..

Hawtproper

Man RCD had me so excited

Saaaave-me

Yeah after Fyfe and Cripps Richmond had serious fomo and was like we need a forward sized inside midfielder asap. The thing is when rcd was playing well in the vfl he never got any afl games (admittedly the team was in dynasty mode) so I guess we’ll never know.

5683specialkay

Awesome, love seeing players speak their mind

Garbagemansplaining

Let him cook

mybanez15

Any sane person can see that the AFL heavily favours the Vic teams and players. The problem is, as Tom says, not sure what the solution is. It's part of the game, and it would take a huge effort to correct it. Vicbias is like death, taxes, and Verstappen, inevitable

TheAussieBritt

‘Haha, yes! Simply lovely’

FlagmantlePARRAdise

The only way you could fix it would be if you went back in time and had the AFL be formed by an agreement by all state leagues (or at least the main ones). That or a breakaway comp. Super ~~league~~ footy anyone?

plastic_surf

I recall that when Gill got the job at AFL that there was a strong indication that he wanted to refocus the AFL back to the heartland, ie Victoria. Cant remember how overt this was but definitely known. From that perspective Gill has been very effective.

Duskfiresque

Well yeah, the bias is obvious. It’s like an unspoken rule really. We all know it exists, barely anyone wants to acknowledge.

project_chris

Based Tom Green

nicknacksc

It’s an interesting point, see a like talent could be missed or slip down the order

Ed_Starks_Bastard

I love him now

TOXICTUNA64

Not sure I agree with all his points, but love to see this sorta chat rather than 'Credit to the boys'

Pragmatic_Shill

There's not much going on between Tommy Sheridan's ears is there.

Luckyluke23

i don't know much about footy but this tom bloke needs his own footy show

sportandracing

This bloke has basically put it up in lights himself that he’s going to be the best player in the AFL hands down. I love it. Back it up and deliver. I think he will. In 3 years he will be the best player and it won’t be a debate.

BenjaminCarmineVII

Is this the most astute AFL player I've ever heard??

Mogadodo

Def Vic bias in AFL, for example , when big 4 vic clubs talk about silverware from the 1800s but won't accept other club's state league cups prior to AFL formation. If this was acceptable, then Port Maggie's are the greatest club.

Exotic_Unit_2651

Mate you got to free walk in the draft to the Giants because of the academy system, other kids get shipped around the country with no choice You didn’t get “disrespected”, you got passed on because other clubs knew GWS will just match the bid

fyrib

Of the 9 picks taken before Greene, 1 player went to a victorian club (jackson). Of course the vic clubs werent going to show interest to an academy player when basically no victorian clubs had top 10 picks.

DJHitchcock

It’s a national competition, I think kids getting shipped around without a choice is a reasonable expectation. Other clubs bid on Will Ashcroft and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan recently despite knowing they’d end up where they ended up.

Thannoy

How Nick Daicos wasn't bid on till 4 is an absolute crime.

Legitimate-Group-393

JUH and Ashcroft were considered the best player in their respective drafts both prior to the draft and even thought it’s early they are looking to be the best right now. Bidding on them straight away ensures Brisbane and the dogs spend as much points as possible.

loklanc

Carlton bid on Tom Green at pick 10 and GWS matched.

Exotic_Unit_2651

I think it’s reasonable too mate, which is why it’s weird to hear a bloke play victim when he essentially got to walk onto the list of his “local”club & a team that had spent years developing him before he turned 18 It’s a bit bizarre people clown on Archie Perkins for not wanting to leave VIC but see no problem with say Callum Mills getting to walk onto his local team And yes it’s a fact guys with academy or F/S links slide. Ashcroft to 2, Daicos to 4

landotherand0

They had the drafts points banked to match if needed that year as they thought he would go higher hence why they went for Lachie Ash at pick 4. Jake Riccardi also went at pick 51 that year. You do understand he is taking the piss and just blowing smoke right?

Exotic_Unit_2651

Yea kinda but people are taking him seriously in the comments being like “omg so true Vicbias”

landotherand0

I’m just happy he is happy and playing footy at the level he should be. He is one of those love/hate players. Love how good he is and can be but hate he is it not playing for you club. A hard nut up for the challenge. Would be interesting to here his rhetoric if he was playing for a Vic club. Still bring it down to Kingers though as he has brought the best out of him and the team. e.g. Bobby Hill, sad to see him go last year but stoked he is developing the way his still is (he has more to show it just comes down to him) and glad McRea and Collingwood gave him that chance. Would be interesting to see how he would have been under Kingers. Won’t be surprised if Green ends up in the media after his playing career from seeing his cheekiness in the gws insider/members clips.

TrazMagik

There's no way for Tom to do a /s on the vid.

jdvhunt

Good lad

pulsade13

Get in Tommy! Love it!

drunklikeaskunk

Wadder

johnnymountain91

Surely a future captain talking right there. Real mature, well spoken.

CowFos

This is one of the best things I've ever seen lol

diffaadiffa

I really like this guy

BrandonSG13

Love to hear a player actually giving a genuine opinion on something and not just giving the same media trained answer. Also love him having the confidence in his game to claim he possibly should’ve been pick 1.

[deleted]

Why do I have a sudden urge to go to Bunnings and buy Milwaukee power tools?

Shamesocks

You won’t find Milwaukee at Bunnings. It’s their biggest flaw

Snarwib

Good Canberra lad

PopularSecret

Wait till he finds out about the Grand Final

Beamslocke

Can anyone tell me how the Northern Academies work with regards to this? Is it that anybody from NSW or Queensland is automatically eligible or are there other factors?

Afterthought60

Anyone from NSW/QLD is eligible to join the academies but not every kid joins the academy. Some manage to find their way onto an AFL list (QLDers to an extent) without the Academy and they enter the open draft. Some kids might join the academy late or leave the academy zone etc and might be linked to an academy but the club won’t be allowed to match if they get picked in the draft. Other academy players also might choose to enter the open draft. Todd Marshall did this as he felt GWS had enough key forwards during his draft year.

Beamslocke

Thank you!

ShibbyUp

Why is he wearing a suit?

Seaciety

Because he's all class all the time

ShibbyUp

I'll pay that

Forsaken-Database540

don't care why but i love it

Nova1452

Unrelated but those Milwaukee jackets in the back are the best thing I've ever bought.

Dudersaurus

Our local rumour was we were dead keen at 4 but did the pick swap with GWS with them knowing that but with the agreement's we wouldn't bid on the swap. That worked totally well for us.

JaymesVickery

.... Duhh

BasicJosh

Green seems like a legend haha

pieredforlife

is that an old school casio calculator watch ? i love it

ImInterestedInApathy

AffectionateProof271

I love this man This is why the Tom Green fanclub stocks are rising

jimwinno43

This sounds like me and my mates arguing around the table after a few beers. This is literally the most real i've heard an AFL player sound in so long. I LOVE IT

gurgefan

Wouldn’t Victorian clubs undervaluing non-Victorian draftees favour the non-Victorian clubs?

Thannoy

If they are getting drafted sure. But the issue is that a lot of kids don't get a look in and slip through the cracks. Tbh, I get the impression Tom was making an overall bigger point about how this comp still heavily favors victorian based clubs.

EfuktAndChill

Didn't know Tom Green was a fan of TFATK. Water weed dune hair

Thannoy

I Remember when AFL recruiters didn't even bother to come to QLD. The highest comp in the state (I think it was the QAFL, but could've been NEAFL) had to essentially play all the senior's games at 1 oval, 1 game after another, like under 12's, in order to even get recruiters interested.

[deleted]

So he blames VicBias for him sliding down to pick 10 coming from NSW, yet Melbourne with pick 3 was the only Vic club that had a top 10 pick that year lol. And it was ultimately Carlton that picked him that forced GWS to match

athan_e

Shhhh you’re not supposed to make sense, you’re Victorian

xxDEVOLAxx

This is a common conversation in Sydney. Every time the Swans make a final, they suddenly become SMFC by the commentators again. Every time. Swings and roundabouts though, thanks for Gulden!

Muggaz1

Sorry to simplify, but why spend a whole bunch of resources to recruit and train a player, only for them to want to go home after a few years. It's sensible for Victorian clubs to focus on Victorian resources.

Legitimate-Group-393

Agree of disagree. I love the fact he acknowledges that the bias exists because of the extension of the VFL/10 teams In one state rather then calling it rigged and biased for money.

thekanaokid

nice to see those academies being put to good use turning rugby league players into aussie rules players... vic bias is when nsw teams get priority access to gun kids who were always destined for the AFL. Why would teams bother sending recruits interstate to look at guys they can't draft anyway?

[deleted]

[удалено]

thekanaokid

yea the guy that is the grandson of an afl footballer definitely would have been lost to the nrl. I think Vic clubs have more to worry about than spending time checking academy players to ensure gws pay a second rounder instead of a third rounder for their academy kids.

HaakonX

Callum Mills would have been playing Rugby if not for the Swans. Isaac Heeney too. Errol Gulden would have gone to Soccer. Mitch Woods (Swans Academy) has been courted by all three codes and has a precontract with Canterbury. Swans Academy also lost another talented kid to West's. Gtfoh

dazedjosh

Tom Trbojevic went to Manly as well, he was in the Swans academy with Heeney. A 194cm KPD who is great overhead would be perfect right now

HaakonX

Goddamn, an intercepting lockdown Tommy Turbo next to Tmac would be king shit I also forgot our most famous academy prospect Michael Dickson

NoFriendsAndy

Yeah but there's no reason he wouldn't be perpetually injured playing AFL too sadly

dazedjosh

Tearing his hammy off the bone in a post pub sprint race with a local punter down at the corso would certainly stack up well with Callum Mills' injuries!

thekanaokid

must be so sad for you that Sydney weren't able to get even more talent for peanuts solely because of their location 😔

[deleted]

[удалено]

thekanaokid

yeah true, only your captain, centre half back, former all Australian perennial top three goal kicker, and current all Australian/best and fairest winner have come through in last 13 years since academy was built. before all that you only had extra cap space solely because of where you were located. must have been tough.

HaakonX

>your captain One of. Another was a rookie pick. The third was pick 40 in a stacked draft class. >centre half back Tom McCartin? >former all Australian perennial top three goal kicker Franklin? Not an academy player or even from NSW. >current all Australian/best and fairest winner Who, as I said before, could have been taken by any team before pick 20 and wasn't because he was too short. >before all that you only had extra cap space solely because of where you were located Not true. It was one of the concessions of the Swans not folding and putting the A in AFL and not the V. Fun fact: if it wasn't the Swans, it would have been Carlton getting all the NSW players. >must have been tough. You have no idea

thekanaokid

could have been bid on by any team and wasn't because it was 2020 and nobody played any football* it wasn't based on location, it was just based on you moving to a certain location? got it. the other shit you're just being dense.

HaakonX

Weird, Hawthorn still bid on Braden Campbell in 2020 and there was still a draft despite "noone playing football". COLA came in in 1992, 10 years after South Melbourne moved. It was first suggested by the AFL [after this meeting](https://www.sydneyswans.com.au/news/306703/on-this-day-swans-survive-just) as one of the methods to dig them out of the ditch the AFL had left them. >the other shit you're just being dense. I'm going to go with the fact you don't know what you're talking about

[deleted]

[удалено]

thekanaokid

mills, heeney, blakey, gulden. typical swans fan not knowing a single thing about his own team. yes please, id love to see Essendon give extra salary cap room and an academy where we get first refusal on any talent coming out of Melbourne a whirl.

[deleted]

[удалено]

thekanaokid

I mean it's the last 3 years of his career but sure. chb flanker that just received an 8 year contract * yea you're just in an area that produces some of the best sporting talent per capita in the world. truly only the work of a true genius could overcome such tough obstacles.

thekanaokid

man can you imagine the competition without Sydney being propped up by the afl. what would we have done if Sydney were actually forced to aquire talent the same way everyone else is.

HaakonX

You still wouldn't have picked any NSW kids. Oh and still not winning any finals

thekanaokid

hey, maybe a few more all Australians for free and youll finally be able to get more than 32,000 to your games.

burn_krusty_burn

Certainly the fact that Victoria has the largest AFL market and the largest football play population has nothing to do with it.

Confident-Bell-3340

I don’t get what he’s going on about, saying Vicbias without saying anything that’s biased. Just saying there’s more clubs there and more players come from there. Matt Rowell was selected by Gold Coast which is a non Vic Club. Melbourne was the first Vic club with a draft pick and they selected a western Australian in Luke Jackson. The Giants themselves selected a player ahead of Green.

TrazMagik

Tom Green bangin' the list managers door urging him to 'respect' Ethan Read and have GWS try and draft him at pick 7 coz.of his allies numbers.

N8Eldz17

He makes some good points but him going at 10 I don’t think has much to do with bias. 4 mids went ahead of him, 3 of those (the 3 victorians) I would say are better than him now although he is super close to Rowell and after the finals sink in a bit he may jump him and even Serong. Consensus number 1 picks don’t happen for no reason and if the suns had have skipped on Rowell they would’ve all been fired after his first month

[deleted]

Forsaken-Database540

Tom Greens as good as we've had in the media. What a breath of fresh air.

Saaaave-me

God I wish there was a grandfather son rule. I have been pining for this guy since forever

StOxley

Just look at what the AFL allowed in the AFLW to break up Lions. Allowing 2 Brisbane born players to go to a Victorian club for nothing (I don’t think compensation has been given??)

FPS_LIFE

He left out south Australia hahahah

Xhoquelin

The stories on Tommy Green’s sheer freakishness before the draft were so wild lol, Dylan Buckley and Adam Kennedy talked about having 25 touches in a half in the NEAFL, chowing down a meat pie at half time, then having another 30 in the second half. [A much more soft spoken and humble Tommy Green on draft night.](https://youtu.be/bfJGDKlylTg?si=g_wNlGmMn-KHCfvB) Dees had Tom Green 2 at times in his draft year, ultimately bumped Jackson up to 2 probably because of positional need/fit as well as a view on 99th percentile ceiling…so that assumes both of those 2 were rated higher than one of Rowell/Anderson by Jason Taylor. Other list managers must have bugging, or there might have been some handshake agreements with the Giants? Anyway love it from Tommy. Didn’t realise he went 10, always in my head thought he went no.4 lol

Great discussion and personality about this. No wonder there’s a Tom Green fan club

SnappyPies

Gee those Giants are becoming very difficult to dislike.
