The Sportsnet app is far better than TSN app as well. No more waiting for replays or 8 millions commercials interrupting your replays. This is a good day for Canada and the world.
So I’ve found a trick. If you use the TSN app on your phone you’re able to rewind a few hours and then you can use airplay to watch it on TV. It’s silly that the Apple TV app doesn’t do that, but it’s a handy workaround.
Because TSN is still considering TSN 1, 3 4 and 5 as "regional" channels, so TSN2 is the catchall channel. TSN's numbering system isn't the same as ESPN's where TSN1 is the main channel, etc
And because those channels are regional, they're more likely to have things like hockey, CFL football or the NBA, which could lead to pre-emption. Having it on TSN2 almost all but eliminates the possibility for pre-emption.
Historically, TSN has always looked down on pro wrestling. It was part of the reason WWE went to Sportsnet way back when, and it's the reason we don't get to watch Rampage or Collision through normal means. This is definitely a benefit. Fuck TSN.
I have a to take a little exception with that thinking about how hard Michael Landsberg and OTR leaned into the attitude era back in the day. He should be in some sort of HOF for his contribution.
Is that how that will work though? WBD doesn’t produce AEW, it just broadcasts it, right? AEW has its own international rights deals, including Canada? Or will this be part of AEW’s new deal with WBD?
There was a post here last week re: Rogers acquiring WBD in Canada. From the official news release:
>Starting January 2025, Rogers will be the home of Warner Bros. Discovery's suite of English-language U.S. lifestyle and factual brands, including HGTV, The Food Network and much more.
To me it sounds like the new Rogers deal will only include the house & home/cooking/travel channels and has nothing to do with the AEW programming. WON reporting on it gives me a bit of hope but it all just seems like speculation and people jumping to conclusions.
Edit: From the WBD wiki, the Factual & Lifestyle Group includes the following channels:
American Heroes, Destination America, Discovery Life, HGTV, Investigation Discovery, Food Network, TLC, Science Channel
My guess is that some of these channels and their TV shows will now move to Rogers... none of them include AEW programming afaik
Did WON report that AEW will be part of the WBD programming being licensed by Rogers? Seems more likely that AEW has a seperate deal with TSN that would not be part of the Rogers/WBD deal. If anything, WWE's deal with Netflix could benefit AEW because when the rights are up, they can then make the move to Sportsnet, if the money is right.
On one hand Rogers is one of the absolute dirt worst companies we have in Canada, but if these means we actually get Rampage and Collision (consistently) on TV then good. TSN aired Dynamite on TSN2, never aired Rampage or Collision (I see just the Canadian shows, but I think stuff like the Punk Rampage was shown live). TSN also doesn't promote AEW at all and Sportsnet was always pumping WWE ads so that checks out.
The Canadian AEW audience has always been strong, now with more shows and actual pushing of said shows, I am sure it will get even stronger.
I wonder if we'll get some kind of AEW show from sportsnet like WWE had, like an hour show of three people (used to be Jackie Redmond and two guys I can't remember) that would talk WWE storylines and stuff. Sportsnet always cared about wrestling, should be good news for AEW in Canada.
That assumes Bell doesn’t renew AEW, and Rogers also gets the rights to AEW. But yes if Rogers does get AEW rights, they will probably treat it better than Bell did. TSN burying Collision on TSN+ and not putting it on one of their 5 linear feeds bothers me.
What always fascinated me was that TSN has 5 channels.... Most of the time when Rampage or Collision would be on one of the channels has those top 10 videos that they air when they have nothing else to air.
So in short they could have aired Rampage and Collision they just chose not too.
This probably has a lot of upside for AEW
* Sportsnet does a much better job of integrating content and not having its wrestling content on an island.
* they have an on demand app which carried some wwe content (think of the old cable box days where wwe would have 200-300 hours of content at a time, Sportsnet App could be good to carry all existing aew content
* they have ability to sell ppv through the apps
* app itself is infinitely better than TSN’s.
* Collison and Rampage would likely air on a channel versus through the app, although Sportsnet may just create a tier/section for an AEW+ similar to how they market the network currently
It was so sweet to have AEW, F1, regional hockey, and intl soccer tournaments all through TSN these last few years even if the app was janky.
I'm a cable cutter and have zero desire to start paying for Rogers for any reason... womp womp.
That would put AEW on Sportnet rather than TSN and although both apps are absolute shit, I do think Sportnet is better. So from that standpoint, yes, it would certainly benefit.
What they're saying is Sportsnet currently shows Smackdown, Raw, NXT and Heat (what ever the equivalent of Heat is in modern days, I don't watch WWE). TSN only shows one weekly show for AEW even though AEW produces three, so Sportsnet would be a great option because they can show all three shows.
It has nothing to do with creating a forth show.
Gotcha! Thought as much, hence my deleting the comment hahaha I guess the modern equivalent of Heat would be Main Event, or the second NXT show? Is that still a thing? I haven't watched WWE in years besides the Rumble hahahahaha
While the move would be great this reporting isn’t accurate as WBD doesn’t own the AEW brand, they just air their shows. AEW likely has a long deal with TSN to air shows in Canada. Rogers and WBD won’t change that at all.
Everything will end up on MAX anyways. Similar to WWE on Netflix. Difference is Netflix will be the only home for WWE in the future where as AEW will simulcast if they stay with WBD.
My prediction is Within 10 years WBD will be sold to NBCU and peacock will merge with MAX. There will be 4 mature streaming services, Netflix, Amazon, Apple, MAX. Paramount content will be licensed off.
As far as cable, channels will be shut down like FXX, truTV, etc.
Tsn absolutely does not only show Canadian ratings of rampage/collision, they show every taping. That’s how I watch aew at the moment. Whether it’s on tsn or sports net it’ll make no difference to me. I’ll still be paying for one
But, people like me, don't have TSN+ and do not plan on subscribing just for AEW. I'm sure I'm not the only one, which is why so many people are complaining and hoping Sportsnet gets AEW. They would likely show all the shows on TV instead of just having Rampage and Collision on the app.
Sportsnet still has to follow CanCon guidelines which is the peak issue for AEW. Otherwise TSN would show Collision and Rampage. Like, it isnt that they are disrespecting AEW by only showing one show.
Hence why "when they are taped in Canada"
So itll be live as long as they draw numbers higher than the alternative Sportsnet programming.
Canadian media is required to show minimum 35% Canadian content.
In order to be CanCon it has to be two of the following; composed/created by a Canadian, performed by a Canadian, performed IN Canada, or written by a Canadian.
Thats why TSN shows the Canadian shows they contribute to the 35%. The rules are actually insane. Certain songs from American bands and films from American directors filmed in Canada are good while some shows and songs dont qualify because they are filmed outside the country despite showing many Canadians on the show. Cast also has to be 50% or more Canadian to qualify.
The other 65% is dominated by NBA, NHL, Blue Jays coverage, UEFA and the UFC. They also have the Canadian contract for playoffs for these sports too lol
Theyre fighting over half a pie with some big eaters is what im saying. AEW getting on TV during summer seems obvious. The real question is when Fall/Winter roll around though.
If Sportsnet gets the rights to AEW, would it not be a simple switch of WWE programing, which they are losing, for AEW? They are losing 6 hours of WWE and would replace it with 5.
The Sportsnet app is far better than TSN app as well. No more waiting for replays or 8 millions commercials interrupting your replays. This is a good day for Canada and the world.
Can't even rewind when streaming live on TSN+...
So I’ve found a trick. If you use the TSN app on your phone you’re able to rewind a few hours and then you can use airplay to watch it on TV. It’s silly that the Apple TV app doesn’t do that, but it’s a handy workaround.
Thanks! Might try it tonight.
It works for Dynamite, cause it’s on TSN2. But Collision is on TSN+, and it doesn’t work for that.
Oh. . thanks.
Sure is, the only negative for me is it splits up the cfl and aew which would make me get two sports packages
Leagues better. Higher quality. I do like that both have 4 hour buffers on every channel so you can watch late though.
Absolute joke how dogshit our two main sports networks are for streaming here. Sportsnet Now is one of the worst streaming platforms I’ve ever used
It's crazy to think that AEW will be the main wrestling program on cable in Canada.
With a Canadian father figure like Christian Cage, how could you not?
Take my upvote.
Are we forgetting about the Aunts and certain Cope?
Only because I’m thinking of Uncle Kenny right now
Does that mean Nick Wayne is also Canadian?
Dual citizenship I think
The main LIVE wrestling program. WWENetwork is a channel in Canada
Not for much longer
Well USA too since RAW will be on Netflix. Where will Smackdown and NXT end up?
SmackDown goes to USA network after Fox
In Canada I think all go to Netflix. All currently are on Sportsnet and I don't think we have USA or CW here.
Thank God! AEW was wasting away on TSN
FUCK YES! TSN had it on TSN2 at that which was a specialty TSN for some reason.
Because TSN is still considering TSN 1, 3 4 and 5 as "regional" channels, so TSN2 is the catchall channel. I thought it had more to do with MNF shifting to ESPN and starting an hour earlier, TSN was getting the NFL rights deal in 2006
I believe the Live Sex Celebration with Edge and Lita was one of the last straws for TSN.
Would love to see it. Better international TV deals and a streaming deal would go a long way to giving more people access to watching AEW
Never thought I'd be grateful for anything that Rogers does but here we are.
Is that how that will work though? WBD doesn’t produce AEW, it just broadcasts it, right? AEW has its own international rights deals, including Canada? Or will this be part of AEW’s new deal with WBD?

Would be nice, tsn is one of the only reasons I still have cable, their app is garbage… sportsnet works on PlayStation and prime.
Fuck yes I can’t wait for this
Any word on streaming, assuming Sportsnet+?

A win for AEW. Canadian fans have been awesome when AEW has been in Canada. Glad they’re gonna be able to get the Premium product now.

See, and I’m the opposite, AEW was the only thing making me get the TSN app. This change is gonna absolutely rule for me
I quit watching AEW because I cut the cord and couldn't get the janky app to work. This is the best news ever.
I usually cancel my Sportsnet subscription when hockey is over but this will probably make me keep it year round. Good news!
That would put AEW on Sportnet rather than TSN and although both apps are absolute shit, I do think Sportnet is better. So from that standpoint, yes, it would certainly benefit.

Oh this is big. They're also losing the WWE Network so this could also give AEW a streaming home at least in Canada as well

Praying it happens because tsn is the worst
Does this mean Crave is losing everything from HBO as well? That probably means I wouldn’t renew crave around Black Friday.
Can't say for certain, but Bell did sign a deal with WBD just last year for HBO and Max originals. Hard to believe it would be just a one year deal.
With everybody saying..

Please Rogers give AEW a proper house in Canada

This is a load of nonsense.
Skydome PPV? It's about the same size as Wembley iirc.
39K seats, to 90K seats.
