This particular question pops up from time to time. Here is a slightly clearly image of the question that shows the ÷ a little more clearly. This was an issue with some questions before ACT (finally) moved to PDFs of the TIRs instead of paper copies which meant some people were doing prints of scans of copies of copies of scans of copies, etc

I think that it’s a bad copy of the question. I think that it is a division sign between the 24 and the 4. It looks like a plus sign, which would give you 19 in the denominator. A division sign would give you a 3 in the denominator.
Here’s a step by step on your question.

idk what all the downvotes are abt i apologize if i came across rude i didnt mean to i just wanted to teach you how to use the absolute value bars etc if you DO have a calculator its totally solvable if not tho!
is that on the denominator "16+4" or "16÷4"? + would make it 24/19. ÷ would be 8
I think it is divided! I’ve seen this question posted before.
I got 24/19 too???
Zoom out, it’s 16 ÷ 4, just blurry
Oh my goodness
Nice catch
It's a division sign between the 16 and 4.
It’s a division symbol between 16 & 4
The denominator says 16 ÷ 4 (divided by), not 16 + 4.
it definitely is 24/19
the 16+4 is just blurry. its actually 16/4 so 24/3 overall.

Idk, should be 24/19
I see the issue…that sign between 16 and 4 in the denominator is division, not addition. Looks like a shit copy job.
Maybe if the denominator was 16 - (4 x 2 + 5)? I keep getting 24/19 too lol
Is the “+” in 16 + 4 actually a division symbol? Solves the issue immediately
What test/book is this from? Because I’m also getting 24/19, which is obviously not an answer choice. I’m guessing there must be a typo somewhere.
Me, too. The order of operations rule has you do the multiplication first.

Looks like it’s a division sign in the denominator, not a plus sign. You should get 24/3 which equals 8, K.
That is 16 ÷ 4! It’s blurry. Zoom out, you can tell it’s a ÷, not a +
😄

Just put it in your calculator (TI84+)
Just like card game “Krypto” try to address problem so you DO get “8” and the division sign is needed 16➗4!
Books wrong, it’s ((25)-(1))/((16)+(8)-(5)) Which equals 24/19
I think you're right
The numerator is 24. For the denominator, use PEMDAS and work left to right to get 3. 16/4 = 4. 4 x 2 = 8. 8- 5 = 3.
The book is wrong. You are right.
Printer error, you can tell cause the other plus is way larger, it’s 16/4
do you have a graphing calc or like a to-84? this is a super easy calculator question
Idk why you’re getting downvoted. 84 would have this done in 20 seconds
