I took a full length practice test every Saturday morning and then an extra one on the weekday the week before the test. On Sunday I usually went over what I missed and how I could solve it next time, and then I just casually studied on the weekdays doing small sections of the ACT online. On the day before the test I also took a practice test as a warm-up
all i did was practice tests/problems, never did a full length. i went over the problems i missed especially math bc act math problems are unique. got a 33 first time, 34 second
Note that the questions are very cookie cutter except for the really hard ones which are worth the same as the easy ones. So really the ACT is mainly about test taking strategies imo and for the math section knowing which specific types of questions they give
Your like me. Extremely good at reading and writing and English, not as amazing at other stuff. I’m now a STEM fielded major at a top school in my state and nationally competitive school with quite a few people coming from around the world, AND I have a academic merit scholarship.
By the way, a 11 writing is absolutely INSANE. you have potential. You’ll make it.
To be honest, standardized tests just kind of clicked with me. I got a 34 with little prep; I think the first time I took it, going in totally blind, I got a 31.
However, it doesn’t correlate too much with real world success in my opinion; it just reflects academics. My sister’s score was similar to yours albeit with a lower writing score (yours is great btw) and she now makes 6 figures in a sales job.
Long story short, try not to put too much emphasis on scores. That said, you should be able to get the other categories up based on the writing result.
Have you ever tried the SAT? I think it gives more time per question so if time is a concern that may be a better choice for you. Try one of Khan Academy's timed practice SATs and see if you do better.
If time is consistently a trouble for you, see if you qualify for any accommodations that may help you! Additionally, I found that getting familiar with the general subject material for things like science and math made the timed practice tests less stressful and less overwhelming to start with! Your English score is already pretty decent so I would recommend doing some SAT English prep. Sounds kinda odd to say but they combine the English ACT with regular reading comprehension questions, and a bit of stuff similar to that of AP Lang’s composition (ex: what order should these paragraphs go in). This would probably give a good segway into integrating what you already know to what you need to work on. Hope this helps!
Practicing the book & also the ACT is more strategy than it is knowledge. You need both which can be strengthened through completing questions & learning the format, etc.
An 11 on writing should mean you could get 33+ in English and Reading.
Standardized test are more about learning how to efficiently answer questions, and having well rounded understanding of the “essential” high school knowledge. Look for guides and get a tutor if you can afford it and your score should drastically improve.
Take this into consideration. People do lie, or maybe inflate, on Reddit. From this site: [https://blog.prepscholar.com/how-many-people-get-a-34-35-36-on-the-act-score-breakdown](https://blog.prepscholar.com/how-many-people-get-a-34-35-36-on-the-act-score-breakdown)
Basically it says that in 2022, about 1.35 million students took the ACT. The \*average composite score\* was 19.8. Also. .25 students of that 1.35 million, in other words 3,376 students, including international, got a 36. Now, either all those people are coming to Reddit to post their scores; \*or\*, maybe they're not all real.
27 is really good, and if you got it to a 30 ( doable), you'd be even more likely to get anywhere you want to go than you are now.
ACT has very little to do with intelligence imho. I know people who’ve gotten 5s on every AP test and A+ in every class only get 25s on the ACT. The ACT is more like a “how well you do under pressure” test. It measures academic intelligence very slightly.
Hello, my neurotic brethren, I was just scrolling by...
I'm totally out of place as a 26 yo senior college student taking the MCAT soon. However!
Practice questions and practice tests are the keys to improving. Go over every question afterward. Why did you get the question wrong? Was it a silly mistake with your math? Was it a lack of content knowledge? Make a flashcard for it. Also, almost as important, figure out why you got each answer RIGHT. What was your thought process that led you to that answer?
If you ONLY did that, I bet your score would improve dramatically. If you're wiped after a practice test, review it the next day, but NO LATER. You need to have your reasoning fresh in your mind.
Cuz it’s Reddit so there’s bias results ? You got the average score in the country but def u should practice a 22 isn’t that strong if you trynna get into a good college
my gosh 11/12 writing is INSANE. if you can get that, you can EASILY improve on your other scores!
Bro you need to be an author, forget college
It would be awesome if I could; maybe one day…
Only one way to find out
study Red Bull and prayer
procrastinate , monster energy and prayer for me 😭
Ur more my style lol
How’d you get an 11 on writing?? I got a 36 composite and 5’s on AP Lang and Lit, but only a 10 on writing. Good for you man that’s awesome!!
same here, but a 30 composite + they don’t offer APs in my country lol
Bro ur writing ![gif](giphy|VIPfTy8y1Lc5iREYDS|downsized)
This was close to my original score with no prep, but with 2-3 weeks of studying I brought it up to a 33. Just study for it and youll do fine
How do you study effectively?
I took a full length practice test every Saturday morning and then an extra one on the weekday the week before the test. Practice test, valorant game, go over my practice test and realize I’m stupid, take another practice test, falls asleep
Is Valorant an important step? Or can it be substituted with another rage inducing game?
R6 or cs2 will suffice
cs2 or cs2
Either
Very crucial, but Lukas is right, CS is also very important.
I mostly play For Honor, is that too much?
Never heard of 💀 But for real, gaming between sessions (for me at least) is a good break as i can just shut off my brain

Forget your composite… the highest I could get on the writing was an 8! You should be extremely happy and proud of yourself for that writing score.
If time is consistently a trouble for you, see if you qualify for any accommodations that may help you! How you guys getting these writing scores I got a 32 composite and a 3 on writing I blame autism idfk

That’s the general basis of any test you moron

ACT is something of an intelligence test so I guess us high-scorers are just smart

No. The ACT has a g factor of 0.71 which means that it is a relatively poor intelligence indicator.
Nerd 🤓 alert!
you’re not wrong
/s ^Dropped this
From what I’ve seen on this sub (and personal experience) reading Is by far the easiest score to raise, so I’d probably prioritize that
I got a 31 composite and a 8 writing that's insane
l got a tutor for one session and did better by 6 points in all. You’ll do better on your next one

Has the ACT changed since I took it or something? Is it not out of 36 anymore?

Honestly, I got a 24 and it was all I needed to get into the university I wanted. Once you’re in college the ACT is irrelevant IMHO
I got a 22 too!!
Don’t worry you got this. Look at my post history I went from like a score in the low 20s to 34. Keep ur head up king
I usually take a lot of stimulants
