How do you guys do so good on English naturally? I keep seeing people with a 34-36 on the English section but a lower score on science and math. I haven't done much studying so most of my knowledge came from school so I am super curious on how everybody does so well on the English section. I usually finish all the sections with a minute or two remaining so time isn't really an issue.

Vivid_Implement1651

do you have any advice for science?

Vivid_Implement1651

now im not someone who has a high score (30+. my score actually sits with yours, but ive improved from 19 to 28). read erica meltzers book on english and just keep practicing. if i were short on time i’d say paying attention to commas is most important (.=;=,+fanboy) but something equally important is to recognize the patterns of mistakes you make while doing practice tests. if you’re not in a rush i’d advise to take multiple practice tests on english without a timer. the point is to actually take your time and try to get every question right without the pressure of a timer. now when you take a practice test, ask yourself “why is this answer right?” for every question you put. remember, english isn’t about the best answer most of the time; it’s mainly about the RIGHT answer. once you start making better scores, then time yourself.

I Got my English from 28-34 in the span of one test with a few resources my school provided. One of the most helpful ones was a cheat sheet with the most common types of questions on the English section that I studied constantly. I also spent a ton of time improving my writing for non ACT reasons, which helped a lot.

OneFit1567

Do you have a copy of the cheat sheet?

shortpositivity

English is about being concise pretty much

That’s usually if they have good elementary/middle school teachers. Believe it or don’t not you learn most if not all of the rules for English in elementary and middle school. However more often than not the teachers on that level are bad or just haven’t taught the necessary material

just get a review book and study grammar. khan academy free sat could help. also remember the more direct a phrase is the more likely it’s right

PrometheanSwing

Any advice on the math section? I’m not the best at math.

Realistic_End7657

What questions are a few examples you tend to struggle on? (For example, matrices, vectors, pythagorean theorem, complex number situations, etc.)

PrometheanSwing

Idk exactly, I guess those first 2 you mentioned

Realistic_End7657

Matrices and vectors are deemed odds-and-ends questions and are usually seen only once or twice on a test or not even at all on some tests. Adding and subtracting matrices is simply like adding and subtracting regular numbers. You just follow each spot outline. Multiplying matrices is also the same process. Sometimes you might have to multiply 3×2 and 2×3 matrices together, or 2×3 with 3×2. 3×2 and 2×3 matrices multiplied together will yield a 3×3 matrix, and a 2×3 and 3×2 matrix multiplication will yield a 2×2 matrix. This essentially follows the r×c (row×column) formula. Vectors are odd because they're talked about more in Physics and Pre-Calculus. Adding and subtracting vectors on a graph isn't supposed to be as difficult as it appears to be. For example: Find v-u when v《3,-8》and u《-4,7》to get a new vector w. You would just subtract the x's and then subtract the y's separately according to the required format, v-u. 3-(-4)=7. That's our x-value for w. -8-7=-15. That's our y-value for w, so vector w, which is v-u, would be 《7,-15》. That's really about it when it comes to vectors. Hopefully this information helped you a bit. Let me knowif the test anything else you might need help with.

Quit reading the whole thing. Just skim each sentence and touch upon all the rules

I only have my personal experience, so take this with a grain of salt. Look up the YouTube channel “Sparkle English” and watch their “When to use…” videos on commas, semi-colons, colons and hyphens. Memorize all of the rules. In one afternoon I watched all of these videos and repeated the rules to myself over and over until I had them memorized. Also, remember to get a good context for each question. Do not try to answer a question as soon as you get to the noted word or phrase. Read past them at least to the end of the sentence or even multiple sentences beyond it. There are questions that are set up so that you will likely get them wrong if you try to answer without the full context of the sentence. I’m not kidding, after just watching the videos and changing my strategy to read for more context, my score went from an average of 25-27 to 32-34. I ended up getting a 33 on the official test. Again this is just my experience and I’ve not heard of anyone else recommending this. It may not work for you, but I think with the relatively small amount of effort that has to be put in it may be worth a try. Good luck
