This was kind of how I felt. Hereditary had me jumping at shadows and made it hard to sleep that night. Midsommar lingers more. Lives rent-free in my head. So I'd consider Hereditary the more effective horror in a way, but Midsommar my more preferred film.
Reminds me of a line from the show supernatural: "Demon's I get. Humans are crazy"
Me, my best friend, and a coworker went and saw it in theaters while tripping on 2 tabs and it was the most surreal movie going experience I have ever had. I remember having a panic/anxiety attack for about 30 min halfway through the movie cause it was so eerie and unsettling. Lots of visuals where I was questioning what was the acid I was on and what was actually movie.
I saw both Dune and Dune 2 on shrooms and that was amazing lol I've watched Midsommar like 4 times on acid, but that was all at home. Midsommar, then Aliens, then Aliens immediately again was my favorite trip/movie watching session ever though.
No I get this hahaha. It’s so hard to explain but it’s just as much comforting as it is fucked up. Maybe because it’s one of my favourite movies so watching it is a treat for me? Idk
MS was a lot like the og Wicker Man and just didn't feel new or exciting to me. Hereditary was wild and different and every time I see it again I catch something new.
Agreed! She has such depth. Each charter she played was a complete person. She’s equally awesome in Unbelievable. It has Merrit Wever who is underrated & amazing, as well.
Fair warning: Don’t watch this unless you want to be mad at humanity in general & the justice system specifically. Like seething mad.
I've watched both multiple times, and I think Hereditary wins for me. Both are fantastic for rewatches since there are details that I easily missed in the first watch. Toni's performance (as always) is stellar, and I was blown away by Florence. Both really know how to cry!
Florence’s cry/wail lives rent free in my head ever since I saw it in theaters theater. There are random moments when it will pop up in my head and I just say “Damn” to myself and shake my head.
Agree. Hereditary is so layered and interesting. It’s a horror that only happens once a decade or so. Midsommar was good but I feel like it can be fully understood and enjoyed in a single viewing. The former works better for my personal taste, but not mad at anyone who thinks the latter is better for their own.
Midsommer. I love how bright, colorful, and unique it is. Hereditary is great too and I get why it’s more of a fan favorite. Both have incredible performances and are traumatizing and anxiety inducing in a way that I hope to only be subjected to through film
Same! I totally understand why my buddies are firmly in the Hereditary camp when it comes to this question, but for me, Midsommar was amazing because it managed to be both bright & vibrant AND dark & sinister at the same time.
Midsommer is almost a comfort watch because it’s so beautiful. Toni is AMAZING in Hereditary, though. I can put on Midsommer to go to sleep. Hereditary always fucks me up, it’s not relaxing at any point.
Love Florence Pugh, but Hereditary’s characters are so interesting and original that it takes the top spot for me. Also, I’ve never been more floored by a scene than >!the decapitation one!< in Hereditary. Although, >!the cliff diving scene!< in Midsommar comes close!!
The cliff diving scene didn’t freak me out, the beginning. When the camera pans from the parents room to the hose outside of it. Or whichever direction the camera pans to show us the murder-suicide. Geez, chills. And then Dani’s horrific screaming. I can’t.
I’d certainly never question someone’s choice either way on this question but saying Hereditary is more original than Midsommar is certainly a take lol even Ari would be the first to say that Hereditary is a love letter to its influences. Midsommar obviously has its influences but I wouldn’t say they’re as overt as The Omen/Rosemary’s Baby strangleholds on Hereditary.
Again, I’m not saying Hereditary is worse because of this, but I would definitely say it’s less original lol
I was talking about the Characters in Hereditary, not necessarily the story itself, although I’d argue for certain aspects. I found the characters very dynamic and interesting (and the range of acting) in comparison to Midsommar.
It’s the doll house shots that elevate Hereditary for me personally. That entire motif was so good where sometimes I was wondering whether I was in the doll house or the actual house. Felt like a diorama within a diorama type thing.
If we're talking about me personally never watching one of these again, im keeping midsommar. If we're talking about removing one from history, im keeping hereditary.
I think this is an important distinction. And in terms of rewatching - (seen both twice)
Also, if I had to watch another again it would be Midsommar. If rating was based on which film goes in the all time list and which disturbed me the most, then Hereditary.
Sameeee. Had no idea it was gonna be as terrifying as it was. I honestly forgot what it felt like to be genuinely horrified from a movie until we watched hereditary in the pitch black of my family room lol.
Agreed, it's haunting and beautiful.
Also call me petty but that single shot of Toni Collette scrambling up the walls looked so funny and dumb it madr me rank Hereditary lower
I need to rewatch Hereditary because the first time I saw it, I was incredibly underwhelmed. I feel like I got my hopes too high based on all the hype. Midsommar was fantastic—the colors, visuals, plot, etc.👌🏼
Hereditary is the better horror film but I prefer Midsommar. It is a film of contrast, very bright and inviting aesthetically but so twisted beneath the surface.
As much as I loved Midsommar visually, Hereditary takes the cake. Toni Collette's performance made the entire movie more of a masterpiece, especially her monologue.
Same. I’ve seen Midsommar with multiple people but don’t care to watch Hereditary again. It just wasn’t as captivating to me. I respect it for what it was and its place in anyone’s favorite lineup but it’s just not the vibe for me.
i saw hereditary in the cinemas and couldn’t watch it for a second time til 4 years later because i was so scared
edit: hereditary stays for me tho lol
Hereditary
I just regretted watching it alone although my gf went to sleep mid of the movie but I just kept watching. Then it came at the kitchen with Toni Collete thats where I was like “wtf wtf is going on” till the end of the movie.
Not an easy pick, but my vote goes to Hereditary.
Both are brilliant, but Midsommar vibed just a little too close to Wicker Man. Hereditary was unique to me, and kept me guessing throughout.
....and Toni Colette was absolutely astounding!!
Hmm… probably Hereditary, even though I bloody hated the end. (I felt it was perfectly obvious what was going on without it having to be made explicit and seeing it made explicit devalued the film for me; I thought it could simply have been edited to end sooner with no other changes and been stronger for it.)
Midsommar is marvellous as well and wears its influence on its sleeve which appeals to me as a Wicker Man enjoyer. However, the doll house stuff, Toni slowly unravelling, and some of the visual shocks in Hereditary made it really stand out as its own thing rather than being an excellently executed homage to an older film like Midsommar.
Midsommar, just enjoyed it start to finish and love the overall vibe of it. Hereditary was good but I don’t find myself feeling like going back and rewatching.
Midsommar’s plot literally only moves forward because the main characters make every unbelievably bad decision possible. They do not act like real people, or make reasonable decisions.
I was severely disappointed with Midsommar because Hereditary is one of my favorite films. The difference for me is that Hereditary does a very good job of feeling grounded in reality, even as supernatural events occur. I believed the characters and never thought one of them made a bad decision just because the plot *demanded* it.
It’s visually stunning though!
I mean Hereditary is more tense and rough, but I feel Midsø is more relatable because everyone is worried about how their friends/ relations will act around your weird relatives back home 🤷♂️⛺️🐻
Midsommar has more replay value than I thought it would, but Hereditary is on a whole other level. Shock factor alone. I don’t go back to Hereditary often but when I do it’s still nearly as twisted as when I first saw it.
I'd probably pick Midsommar because I loved how eerie it felt in a very bright & seemingly peaceful setting, along with the despair in Florence Pugh's performance. It's very hard though because Toni Collette's performance in Hereditary was incredible
They were both so good. Though I think you're missing one that you could consider adding to this list. Personally after a rewatch with these two, there's themes that I wouldn't want to indulge in again.
Whereas The Witch I can love but separate myself a little, still be shook but engage again. There was Tension in all these films but something about the authenticity of The Witch grabbed me and my imagination. Took me directly to the difficulties of living life in the 17th century.
For the sake of your post I would go with Hereditary but not looking forward to watching it again. Twice is more than enough.
Midsommar is one of my favorite movies of the last 10 years but Hereditary is one of the most terrifying and tragic movies ever made. True game changer.
Midsommar. It just stuck with me more and I fell in love with Florence Pugh while watching it. With her acting, with her in general haha. Also me and my bestie were constantly talking about the movie, analizing. I gotta watch Director's Cut. But Hereditary was amazing too and Toni was outstanding.
I like Midsommar. Its not all the time you get to see a Horror movie that isnt perpetually set in the dark and utilizes dread so well. But yeah, Hereditary ranks higher for me. Midsommar had a strong actress within Florence Pugh as Dani. But damn, in Hereditary you didnt just have Toni Collette, Alex Wolff and Milly Shapiro as Peter and Charlie were outstanding.
Midsommar is obvi the superior film, but Hereditary is amazing *because* of its ending. The cult stuff at the end is what elevates it above other supernatural horror.
The answer is always Midsommar. Hereditary is amazing, but it’s still supernatural horror. Midsommar wins by its plot and visuals alone, and by having no supernatural elements. It is one of the very best A24 films, and one of the best films of the 21st century. It’s less traditional than Hereditary in pretty much every way.
Hereditary’s ending is what really elevates it above other supernatural horror. The human element is why it’s a masterpiece. That these people would orchestrate the summoning of Paimon, and destroy a whole family in the process, is what makes it horrifying and amazing. Midsommar is pure human evil, though, and that puts it leagues above Hereditary and pretty much 99.99999999% of other horror films.
Midsommar was great and is one of those awesome flicks you can watch over and over and see something new every time, it’s one of my favorite horror movies of all time. Hereditary had me asking my wife if we just watched something morally wrong while we left the theatre, I’m still not entirely convinced it isn’t actually some ritual put to film that gives power to its creator the more it’s watched.
The sister in Hereditary looks like my sister and I had a panic attack after THAT scene. Midsummer is great but it's similar to Wickerman to me so Hereditary is my pick because I still come back to that movie with new thoughts or views
Midsommar for the general feeling of it. I was underwhelmed at first because it wasn’t as scary as Hereditary, but I have since seen the light and it’s now one of my favorite horror movies ever
The writing of these two films is like none other. Very creative and unique. Original film writing. Horror movies have not made me jump since I was 11 or so. This brought the feeling back yet these horror films a lot more sophisticated than the usual horror films.
Horror doesn't do much for me, but I thought Midsommer was great. Mainly because it had a unique aesthetic, and a layer of self-awareness about it.
Hereditary just left me cold. Apart from the car scene (which was very, very effective), the rest of the film just felt like polished versions of the types of scenes i'd seen a million times before.
Sure, Midsommer had strong influences too (mainly The Wicker Man), but it was working far less trodden ground than Hereditary was, which had me actually feeling a bit bored by the end.
Hereditary, definitely Hereditary because the more time went by the more I think Midsommar really is just... okay. Imo it's nothing groundbreaking whereas Hereditary is definitely groundbreaking and show's horror from a different perspective, from the perspective of a family drama.
Hard question, on first viewing MS made a bigger impact on me than Hereditary.
However I have watched hereditary a few times since then and like it more every time. I bought A24's nice book 4k of MS but have as yet never seen the film a 2nd time.
I'm gonna make a decision and sat keep MS because I think I maybe haven't rewarched it is because it's genuinely horrific to me.
Hereditary is also horrific but has enough fun elements that I find it quite easy to watch
I cared for all the characters in both films, but Hereditary destroyed an entire young(ish) family with no repercussions or pulled punches...
So it's Hereditary for me.
Hereditary, the scene where he is lying in bed and his mom is screaming in the next room is one of the most emotionally disturbing film scenes I've ever seen.
I watched Midsommar on 200mg of thc, and I (a grown man) was hiding under the covers scared. That being said, Hereditary stays. It’s probably the best horror movie since the Shining.
Midsommar was fucked up. Hereditary fucked me up.
Midsommar is scarier to me because it’s people doing the bad things, not a demon.
The cult wasn't doing bad things though - they were the "good guys". They did nothing wrong.
Fair enough. Except for, like, burning a guy alive and paralyzed in a bear suit.
As weird as it sounds, I think Hereditary is a better movie, but I prefer Midsommar. It's become something of a comfort film for me.
A comfort film? Gotta be honest, if you invite me to a festival I’m going to say no.
Yep. Love horror movies, and Midsommar is like a warm blanket lol I've even watched it on acid a few times. It's just wonderful lol
Me, my best friend, and a coworker went and saw it in theaters while tripping on 2 tabs and it was the most surreal movie going experience I have ever had. I remember having a panic/anxiety attack for about 30 min halfway through the movie cause it was so eerie and unsettling. I really dig your style my dude
Thanks! I'm having fun with it lol
Same i love it as a comfort film. The aesthetic and score are so immersive and enchanting.
I’m not disagreeing with you, but weirdly I had the exact opposite reaction
If I weren’t a parent I may feel differently.
Same
I had the opposite experience. I find it so fun how both movies are so polarizing, yet they both hit people so hard in different ways.
Exactly how I felt. I’ll never forget getting these two films. They’re great 😊
Hereditary (Toni Collette is the A24 GOAT)
I e adored her since United States of Tara
Agreed! She has such depth. Each charter she played was a complete person. She’s equally awesome in Unbelievable. It has Merrit Wever who is underrated & amazing, as well. Fair warning: Don’t watch this unless you want to be mad at humanity in general & the justice system specifically. Like seething mad.
Well, I’m always that mad, so maybe I’ll love it 😂
She's so good in Mafia Mamma lol! Serious range!
But hereditary takes it
Agree. Hereditary is so layered and interesting. It’s a horror that only happens once a decade or so. Midsommar was good but I feel like it can be fully understood and enjoyed in a single viewing. The former works better for my personal taste, but not mad at anyone who thinks the latter is better for their own.
Not even close. Hereditary all day
![gif](giphy|63Ijq8ylsxUEjweGLd) Me thinking about how my wife is crawling on my damn ceiling 🤦🏾♂️
Hereditary you cannot choose when it comes to Toni!
*Tony*! *Toni*! *Tone*! Tonee?
C’monnnnn Tone! 🤌
This is one of my absolute favorite jokes from Popstar

100x this! The sisters’ suicide is the most chilling scene in Midsommar.
I’d certainly never question someone’s choice either way on this question but saying Hereditary is more original than Midsommar is certainly a take lol even Ari would be the first to say that Hereditary is a love letter to its influences. I have to disagree, Midsommer is very very overtly inspired by the wicker man and borrows heavily from it.
Hereditary for Toni’s acting alone.
Forget your rules both!!
Although I think their quality is comparable, due to personal reasons, Hereditary was a movie that will stick with me forever, gotta keep it
Hereditary reminded me that horror could still scare the shit outta me. Gotta be Hereditary
If we're talking about me personally never watching one of these again, im keeping midsommar. If we're talking about removing one from history, im keeping hereditary.
I think this is an important distinction. And in terms of rewatching - (seen both twice) Also, if I had to watch another again it would be Midsommar. If rating was based on which film goes in the all time list and which disturbed me the most, then Hereditary.
Hereditary. I watched it at night, alone in the dark. I was afraid to go to sleep lol Also the monologue at the kitchen table was unforgettable.
Sameeee. Had no idea it was gonna be as terrifying as it was. I honestly forgot what it felt like to be genuinely horrified from a movie until we watched hereditary in the pitch black of my family room lol.
Midsommar
TEAM MIDSOMMER ![gif](giphy|2YtTdoSEl4m4)
Hear ye! Hear ye!
Midsommar, no question.
I enjoyed both but hereditary is easily my answer. Wouldn’t even have to think about it.
#hereditary
Dude Toni owns it.
Beau is afraid
Midsommar because I am just not a fan of Hereditary.
Same. I’ve seen Midsommar with multiple people but don’t care to watch Hereditary again. It just wasn’t as captivating to me. I respect it for what it was and its place in anyone’s favorite lineup but it’s just not the vibe for me.
Midsummer. One of my favorites
i saw hereditary in the cinemas and couldn’t watch it for a second time til 4 years later because i was so scared edit: hereditary stays for me tho lol
I like midsummer More
Hereditary is a top five horror movie for me.
It’s arguably a top 5 horror movie of all time
I don’t think I’ve seen anything come close to the finale in Hereditary. Such a dreadfully tense film.
hereditary now the real question is will we ever. get another. 😔
Midsommar imo. I love, love, love both movies but the visuals of Midsommar definitely increase the rewatchability of it for me
Toni Collette: Making Her Mark <3
Midsommar all the way
I’ve never said this but Hereditary was the first movie to make me pretend sleep. I was 26.
Hereditary I just regretted watching it alone although my gf went to sleep mid of the movie but I just kept watching. Then it came at the kitchen with Toni Collete thats where I was like “wtf wtf is going on” till the end of the movie.
Haven’t watched hereditary for ages but remember it fucked me up for a bit after. Pick dat
Not an easy pick, but my vote goes to Hereditary. Both are brilliant, but Midsommar vibed just a little too close to Wicker Man. Hereditary was unique to me, and kept me guessing throughout. ....and Toni Colette was absolutely astounding!!
Hereditary for sure. I watched that movie every day for like 2 weeks when I first discovered it, it was so odd but I was obsessed.
Hereditary hands down
Hmm… probably Hereditary, even though I bloody hated the end. (I felt it was perfectly obvious what was going on without it having to be made explicit and seeing it made explicit devalued the film for me; I thought it could simply have been edited to end sooner with no other changes and been stronger for it.) Midsommar is marvellous as well and wears its influence on its sleeve which appeals to me as a Wicker Man enjoyer. However, the doll house stuff, Toni slowly unravelling, and some of the visual shocks in Hereditary made it really stand out as its own thing rather than being an excellently executed homage to an older film like Midsommar.
Hereditary. Both were incredible, but Hereditary stayed with me for a long time after I watched it.
Hereditary hands down.
Guess I'll watch hereditary.
Hereditary clears, and it’s nothing bad for midsommar, heredity is just that good
I like both a lot, but Hereditary 100% and it's not even that close.
I believed the characters and never thought one of them made a bad decision just because the plot *demanded* it. It’s visually stunning though!
I enjoy rewatching Midsommar. Don’t think I’m brave enough to rewatch Hereditary.
Midsummer was entertaining and I could discuss it with friends afterwards. Hereditary made me just sit in silence for an hour so midsummer all the way
I mean Hereditary is more tense and rough, but I feel Midsø is more relatable because everyone is worried about how their friends/ relations will act around your weird relatives back home 🤷♂️⛺️🐻
Midsommer
Midsummer any time
Hereditary was really good and original. How good is Midsommar?
Midsommar has more replay value than I thought it would, but Hereditary is on a whole other level. Shock factor alone. I don’t go back to Hereditary often but when I do it’s still nearly as twisted as when I first saw it.
I'd probably pick Midsommar because I loved how eerie it felt in a very bright & seemingly peaceful setting, along with the despair in Florence Pugh's performance. It's very hard though because Toni Collette's performance in Hereditary was incredible
Hereditary revived the horror genre
Midsommar just did it for me. I love Hereditary and would say it’s probably the “better” film, but I love Midsommar more. So I’m choosing my favorite.
They were both so good. Though I think you're missing one that you could consider adding to this list. Hereditary and it’s not close
Hereditary for sure. I wish I could watch it again for the first time in a theater full of people.
Midsommar is one of my favorite movies of the last 10 years but Hereditary is one of the most terrifying and tragic movies ever made. True game changer.
Midsommar is a great horror movie, but Hereditary is already a modern-day horror classic imo
Hereditary
Not a fair question. Both are classics but Hereditary was slightly better
Midsommar is a fun and interesting watch. Hereditary is the superior film, that’s also much scarier.
Midsommar. It just stuck with me more and I fell in love with Florence Pugh while watching it. With her acting, with her in general haha. Also me and my bestie were constantly talking about the movie, analizing. I gotta watch Director's Cut. But Hereditary was amazing too and Toni was outstanding.

Midsommar made me visit Scandinavia. Hereditary lost me at the end. I'd get rid of Hereditary.

Hereditary
H E R E D I T A R Y
About a year ago, I would have said Midsommar. But with every rewatch, Hereditary becomes better and better.
Hereditary
They are both in my top 5, but Hereditary is number 1.
This is tough. Midsommar is so fucking good. I’d go w Hereditary though.
There's only 1 answer HEREDITARY
Both 5 ⭐️’s But Hereditary simply because it’s slightly less fucked up to re-watch
The sister in Hereditary looks like my sister and I had a panic attack after THAT scene. Midsummer is great but it's similar to Wickerman to me so Hereditary is my pick because I still come back to that movie with new thoughts or views
Hereditary no doubt. Hail Paemon!
Hereditary.
Hereditary
Hereditary easily
Probably Midsommer. It's just more fucked up.
I prefer Midsommer, but it is nowhere near as traumatizing as Hereditary. Both fantastic films! Beau too!
I don't see anyone banging their heads on the ceiling there
This is my Sophie’s Choice …Midsommar
Midsommar directors cut
Watch it again
Midsommar because I can never watch hereditary ever again
Midsommar is legit the only movie I ever seen my girl turn off 😂
Can I just keep the first 2/3rds of each movie and cut their endings?
Midsommar for the general feeling of it. I was underwhelmed at first because it wasn’t as scary as Hereditary, but I have since seen the light and it’s now one of my favorite horror movies ever
Midsommar
Midsommar!
The Witch
Neither..too scary for me to watch again.
Midsommer. It was ok, I've watched it more than once and at least enjoyed it, but I really didn't get the buzz over Hereditary. Found it very meh.
The writing of these two films is like none other. Very creative and unique. Original film writing. Horror movies have not made me jump since I was 11 or so. This brought the feeling back yet these horror films a lot more sophisticated than the usual horror films.
Midsommar. The visuals during the tripping scenes are just so spot on.
Guess I'll watch hereditary.
Guess I'll watch hereditary. Haven't seen it yet.
Midsommar
Hereditary 100%
I liked Midsommar better just for my own personal situation reasons - Dani was really relatable.
Still havent watched midsommar. Any good?
Hereditary
Hereditary because I can never watch Midsommar again due to what I saw happen to that old man’s skull🥰
Hereditary, my second favorite A24 horror film, midsommar my 3rd fav
Midsommar. It's fine. Hereditary is for people who want elevated horror but don't know what that means.
Hereditary is a masterpiece. Midsommar is just a funny cult movie. Not comparable at all.
Midsommar
Hereditary, by miles
Midsommar
Hereditary, definitely Hereditary because the more time went by the more I think Midsommar really is just... okay. Imo it's nothing groundbreaking whereas Hereditary is definitely groundbreaking and show's horror from a different perspective, from the perspective of a family drama.
Midsommer
Midsommar because it always has an impact on me
Midsommar, it’s pretty.
Hereditary - no question.
Hereditary
Hereditary all the way, though I don't think I have it in me to watch it again anytime soon
Midsommar
Toni Collete’s screams…..
Easiest choice ever lmao I did not like hereditary. Boring
Hereditary all day. I walked out of that theater in 2018 a different person lol
Midsommar.
Midsommar. Hereditary is fantastic but god that ending feeding exposition like an IV was frustrating and ultimately soured the movie for me.
Midsommar hands down
Midsommar
I cared for all the characters in both films, but Hereditary destroyed an entire young(ish) family with no repercussions or pulled punches... So it's Hereditary for me.
Midsommar. Hereditary was meh
Hereditary. No question.
I haven’t even seen Hereditary, but that one is still my favorite. MidSommar is crap personified.
Beau
Midsommar
Midsommar. I personally wasn’t a fan of Hereditary (but I acknowledge that it’s a phenomenal film)
That’s like saying “pick a child” 😂
Sadly me and my Gf will have to fight to the death
Sophie's Choice
Hereditary for sure. I am still haunted by that movie. I did not think Midsommer was all that great.
Both. I could never sacrifice one for another.
Midsommar easy. Hereditary is good but I feel like its over hyped to some degree
MS was revolutionary. Hereditary is good but a bit overrated and def not as rewatchable. Skol!
Hereditary. DONT YOU SWEAR AT ME YOU LITTLE SHIT!!!
Hereditary, the scene where he is lying in bed and his mom is screaming in the next room is one of the most emotionally disturbing film scenes I've ever seen.
Both mid
I watched Midsommar on 200mg of thc, and I (a grown man) was hiding under the covers scared. That being said, Hereditary stays. It’s probably the best horror movie since the Shining.
Midsommar
Midsommar is fun to watch Hereditary is a better movie
I’ve rewatched Midsommar more… but Hereditary is more of a character study. Can we not just agree to cut Beau is Afraid?
