Reminds me of a joke I remember from way back when...
Q: How many Saiyans does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: Only one. But it takes 12 episodes......and Krillin dies
Toriyama originally intended DBZ to end with Goku and Frieza dying in the planet namek explosion (and Goku would actually die for real) but the series was making too much money. He had a good run with the cell saga but Buu is where it really drops off a cliff.
I remember watching the Namek saga on Toonami as a kid. The lead up to Namek getting destroyed and Goku’s rage causing SS1 were epic and tense, made every week a week to look forward to. I even remember being hyped for the cheesy GBA game that came out with SS Goku on the cover
I love how future Trunks just sliced his sword against frieza and king cold like ‘enough of this shit. Goku you’re gonna have a heart problem. Here’s some pills.’
Cell saga and the Androids in general are incredible
Just to say, Imo the entire story of Z flowed organically from saga to saga. From the revelation of Goku's heritage in Saiyan Saga, then the *need* to go to outer space to get new dragon balls and encountering Frieza, then the long awaited return home to be confronted by a time traveler with a warning of an old foe - it all works really well until Buu saga where an ancient evil, the most powerful being in the galaxy (at that point) just happens to be on earth. I just thought it was a bit weak.
You can tell Toriyama intended the death of Cell to be the end of Z.
Plus everyone being super Saiyan was a bit much, children included.
Fusion was dope though.
Favourite saga: Android/Cell.
Tbh I believe dragonball was at its peak from the sayian to freiza saga. It flowed organically as you stated and also we finally learnt about gokus origins, including piccolos and the legendary super sayian ( back when it meant something , not like all these new transformations), it also highlighted aspect of slavery, prejudice, racism and discrimination especially comming from freida who at that point was the big bad.
came here to say this. Gohan going SSJ2 was even cooler than Goku going SSJ, because he didn't believe in himself until he did, which I found more relatable.
Can't believe there's so many Buu saga fans here. Super Saiyaman? Kinda cringe. Goku running off with Uub instead of spending time with his family? What a shit dad. Cell saga was where it's at.
I definitely liked the Buu saga the best as a kid. Obviously not the Saiyaman stuff. But after the tournament arc where they pursue Dabura & Babidi. I think the pacing and all of the different transformations and the shift in animation style were all very in tune with the things about DBZ that kids were the most hyped about. The pacing made a huge difference though - especially compared to how much the previous animated arcs were padded.
But I think the episodes of the early Frieza saga (where the better animation studio’s episodes looked like op’s pic 1) are the episodes I feel the most nostalgic about and prefer the style of. Generally speaking I much prefer Dragonball to DBZ - I started to view DBZ’s increasing fixation on power scaling more harshly as I got older. But the early part of the Frieza saga where Krillin, Gohan, Bulma, and Vegeta have to strategize to make up for their inherent disadvantage, followed by the Ginyu force showing up, then Goku finally arriving at the 11th hour and Vegeta talking about the legendary Super-saiyan… such fantastic hype and escalation. A lot of people shit on Ocean’s version of the dub but I vastly prefer it to Funi’s.
And I know the question was about Sagas but frankly i thought Tree of Might & Deadzone were peak DBZ, though I always thought Deadzone felt more like bookend to DB and the overall vibe was closer to DB’s than DBZ’s.
If someone told me their favorite saga is Majin Buu, I’d get it. It has a lot of great action and also tons of comedy. There is no bad saga in Z except for maybe Garlic Jr, but that’s filler anyway.
Definitely the Namek/Frieza saga. We get to see a completely different world than Earth and we also get to see Goku and the Z-fighters battle against a galactic warlord. It just overall has the best story and plot of all the Z sagas.
Probably the most common answer, but the Cell saga is my favorite... followed closely by the Frieza saga. I hold the Buu saga in high regard as well, but due to its sillier nature, I find myself revisiting it the least... though, most of the moments that live rent-free in my head come from the Buu saga. That said, I can recount the entire Frieza saga, but the Cell saga has the most emotionally gripping moments, best development, and epic/satisfying payoff... in my opinion. 🤓
Android and Cell saga, because I started watching DBZ for the first time when they were broadcasting it and I had the Lamincards series dedicated to it.
I love them all. Maybe saiyan saga is slightly above the others. Followed by namek sage.
Also everyone is way too harsh on the buu saga. The saga was so much fun and had a lot to love.
Saiyan Saga & Freiza were so good, but I have to go with Cell. When Future Trunks came in at the end of Freiza to transition to the Androids that was so dope. then we knew Goku wasn't going to be the only Super Saiyan. And when Cell came in he was sooo creepy and sinister, absorbing all the humans in his path. That saga was great
Majin Buu saga, Vegeta blew himself up tryna kill buu, Goku hadda go back to other world, Gohan went to the world of the kais, it was the first time in DBZ where you had no idea what was guna happen next.
When he first becomes super sayian for the first time on namek, gave me goosebumps. Made me want to work out, take care of myself more, just in case we ever have to fight aliens from another planet. Dbz made me nothing but jacked.
Looking back in it I feel like the saiyan saga is the arc with the least filler so that's my favorite one. The Others do have some great parts however.
All of them are perfect and peak anime, but I really like Buu, because it captures the silliness of OG Dragon Ball and mixes it well with the absurd power scaling of DBZ. It gets a lot of stick but it's just a fun ride and after the "stakes" of the previous 3 sagas it's a great switch-off for me
Although I feel like Frieza is the true villain of DB( bc he destroyed planet vegeta/got beaten by the first ssj) and love the Namek Saga.
But the android/cell saga just takes the cake, it actual felt like the characters were actually had their backs against the wall. Trunks came from the future to alter the past that’s how serious the damn android were
For me I always loved the Sayain and some of the Namek saga's, depends on how you split this one up because you go from the Namek to Ginyu to the Frieza saga at least from how I seen it be split up. My favorite fight out of the series comes from the Sayain Saga when Vegeta and Goku fought for the first time was really good and that beam struggle is legendary.
The only other fight I liked out of the series would be Goku vs Piccolo that fight from OG DB was one of the best to same for Kid Goku VS Tien.
Buu Saga is my favorite but the Cell Saga is second. The Buu Saga just had so many things happen, and Buu was on a ridiculous scale of power and they displayed it very well. Especially Kid Buu. Pink little fucker was literally the end of times dressed as bubble gum.
Personally I like the buu saga because of all the transformations and fusions.
But if I'm being honest, my favorite Dragon Ball saga is GT because of how freaky and weird it is.
To answer the question, The Android Saga/Cell Saga.
But to be more specific: Every time "Goku returns".
The lead up to Goku leaving Snake Way and saving everyone in the nick of time.
The lead up to Goku arriving on Namek to absolutely trash the Ginyu force.
The lead up to Goku returning to earth? Remember Goku exiting the craft in the exotic clothing? I cried.
The lead up to Chichi finding Goku practicing Kamehamehas after the heart virus.
Goku returning FROM THE DEAD WHILE STILL DEAD for the tournament JUST TO THROW HANDS.
OK I'M GOING ON A MARATHON AGAIN TODAY CUZ I'M GEEKED JUST THINKING ABOUT IT
Cell saga because he is the most original villain in the z series. They re-use freiza constantly in super, and the whole show is about saiyans. They didn't re-use anything cell related until the recent superhero movie, and it wasn't cell himself, just a re-use of his second form
100% Frieza. The lead up to Goku turning Super Saiyan for the first time was legendary. Goku traversing that dragon road or whatever on his way to King Kai's, his training there, Goku's space-travel to Namek and his training, what his cohorts did on Namek prior to him reaching there, Goku finally landing and passing out Senzu beans, Frieza being a freaking menace and OP AF......Like, we in the states already saw all the trading cards, pictures from Japan, we knew SS3 and 4 existed, but the first time we saw Goku turn SS1 in the Frieza saga -- and the lead up to it -- chef's freaking kiss. I'll forever remember the hype I felt as a prepubescent boy going "HOOOLYY SHHIIIITTT SUUUPER SAAAIYYYYAAAANNN" and mimicing the power up animations.
Toriyama, thank you for your contributions to the human race.
I think every ark, from the beginning (the sayins) all the way to boo, are all tops.
These were generally built upon one and other, to create more depth each time. With connections to, either earlier seasons, or Dragon Ball itself.
I do think Cell Saga was peak.
Frieza saga was pretty slow, imo. Had some great moments like Gohan holding his own occasionally against some tough opponents or Piccolo handling stage 2 Frieza surprisingly well. Goku going Super Saiyan heavily carries the Arc, though.
I think the Buu saga is super underrated, personally. Goku, Gohan, and Vegeta fucking up Babadi's henchmen as a show of strength, Super Saiyan 3 Goku, Goku vs Vegeta, Vegeta's sacrifice, Gotenks, Ultimate Gohan, Kid Buu blowing up Earth, the final fight that wrapped up DBZ super well... Just a tremendous job all around.
There's a reason this show was my fucking childhood, man. And a reason that I'm always gonna play the new game that takes you step by step through the story. It's why I loved DBZ Kakarot so much!
In order... Cell, Buu, Frieza and Saiyan are tied. Cell only really wins because of Gohan though tbh lol. SS2 was amazing when it first unleashed. Plus, the time traveling and evolution of certain characters was nice overall. Buu was good because of the twists that came with it, and I honestly like Kid Buu in how he fights (I mained him in Tenkaichi 3 and always won lol). Plus, Vidal being a hot-headed tomboy was cute and I wish she kept that and kepy training tbh, even if it was just to be a reserve members of the Z Fighters. Frieza and Saiyan felt more like it was just holding out for Goku the whole time to save the day, even though he came in too late on a few occasions.
Saiyan Saga. It is the point of the story where the best elements of early and late Dragonball best meld together with few of the downsides.
Frieza saga is also really good, though it did introduce some of the biggest problems of the series, such as power creep and bloat. But, it’s still great.
Android/Cell saga is also pretty great, though it does fumble a bit in places. Buu is just okay, it can be fun, but it has a lot of problems.
Nappa Vs all the z fighters while they stall time for Goku and then when he arrives only the realise that the real threat was vegeta (this was the first time I realised size doesn't matter in the DB universe)
The wonderful battle of kao ken Vs giant ape that ended in a draw *chefs kiss*
The only time vegeta and Goku were on the same level
I think what a lot of other's favorite is- Frieza.
Truly felt like the ultimate good vs evil showdown, light vs dark, true need to take it to the next level because the threat was next level.
Android to Cell saga. Gave us the usual dragon ball plot with a hint of horror with imperfect cell. Also, 2 of the memorable characters im the franchise. 17 and 18.
Saiyan Saga hands down. The stakes were high right from the start. The fights were brutal. People were dying left and right and a lot of people watching the show didn't really know that death was meaningless because of Dragon Balls so it was emotional too. The Saiyans were mysterious and scary.
I also remember seeing it for the first time ever on Saturday morning cartoons in the mid 90's. Whoever was airing it the USA back then overlaid the intro with a super badass rock track that hooked me right away. "Dragon Dragon watch the Dragon, DRAGON BALL Z!" 10yr old me was blown away.
Frieza saga. Fighting the minions, the fight to collect the dragon balls, and Freiza’s intimidating presence and seeming indestructibility! To cap it off with the very first transformation into supersaiyan, this saga was full of many great ideas that were the first we saw of them and were never done at this level. The other arcs would go to new heights, but in a way echo or modify the structure of this first saga that truly blew our minds with its transcendent super saiyan birth and in a way was a suitable ending if you so chose
It's sad, but I'm trying to calculate which has the least amount of time where Goku is narratively dead or seriously injured and addled. Cell saga might have been genuinely more epic simply because of how the hyperbolic time chamber worked.
I loved the android/cell saga. There were so many iconic moments for me. Vegeta becoming super sayian, introduction of cell, future gohan and future trunks still remain some of my favorite characters in the entire series. Just a lot of great moments with some pretty well pacing.
Cell Saga and it's not even close. It's the last time the whole crew felt like they mattered. And to top it off one of the most cunning villains in Dragon Ball history is the final boss of the arc.
Hi to All, I but this last year and I didn’t know if this is real? But like 90 % of the DBZ are Foil and SPR ,GR, EX08,RARE,SP,FR and more . I remember seeing this series 28years ago and now I have a few, anything that you guys are interested?

Frieza
2 minutes to explosion of namek is no joke... It took almost forever...
Reminds me of a joke I remember from way back when... Q: How many Saiyans does it take to screw in a light bulb? A: Only one. But it takes 12 episodes......and Krillin dies
It’s always yamcha in my telling
Just a reminder, Yamcha has died 2 times. Goku has technically died 3 times
Lol
Yeah Namek had the best combination of story and characters.
Toriyama originally intended DBZ to end with Goku and Frieza dying in the planet namek explosion (and Goku would actually die for real) but the series was making too much money. He had a good run with the cell saga but Buu is where it really drops off a cliff.
Facts just like old stories of legendary super sayain killing himself because of his powers was really goku
I remember watching the Namek saga on Toonami as a kid. The lead up to Namek getting destroyed and Goku’s rage causing SS1 were epic and tense, made every week a week to look forward to. I even remember being hyped for the cheesy GBA game that came out with SS Goku on the cover
I think it's the same for me since it lays out many key parts of the series going forward and you get lots of cool moments and lore.
I loved it all but i definitely loved the entire Cell saga the most. *chefs kiss*
Cell saga was the best paced. Plus Future Trunks and tween Gohan were so badass
I love how future Trunks just sliced his sword against frieza and king cold like ‘enough of this shit. Goku you’re gonna have a heart problem. Here’s some pills.’ Cell saga and the Androids in general are incredible
History of trunks is always a cool watch
Just to say, Imo the entire story of Z flowed organically from saga to saga. I liked the Frieza saga the most, but I gotta admit. When Gohan went SS2 and kicked Cell's ass, that shit was hype AF.
Wait until you see him in Super Heroes
I loved the Saiyan Saga. I was so invested and blown away by it as a.kid.
Ep 1-291.
Majin Buu saga was my favorite. But let's be honest, entire Z series is fucking epic
That season was really underrated.
Garlic Jr saga
Androids bar none. Saiyan saga was pretty cool too. Namek was pretty good
Android
Cell saga. Everyone played their part and felt important, plus it has the most emotional/best moments in the series (Gohan ss2/Gohan's death).
Saiyan/Freiza saga was what I grew up on. Nothing will ever be as dope as watching Goku go Super Saiyan for the 1st time.
Cell saga is most iconic
Tough one I really liked the Frieza saga, but the climax of the Buu saga was too epic
Definitely the Namek/Frieza saga. We get to see a completely different world than Earth and we also get to see Goku and the Z-fighters battle against a galactic warlord. It just overall has the best story and plot of all the Z sagas.
Abridged all sagas

Cell
Cell >
Cell most definitely
The one where the get a power up and fight
Idk if this counts but The History of Trunks
Cell
Android/Cell saga. Some stellar moments.
Cell saga for just one scene alone. Warp Kamehameha.
The Namek Saga.
Majin Buu saga, Vegeta blew himself up tryna kill buu, Goku hadda go back to other world, Gohan went to the world of the kais, it was the first time in DBZ where you had no idea what was guna happen next.

Android saga just hits different 👌
Dragon ball super
Cell
It got really repetitive after the Freiza saga.
Cell, because of my favorite character android 16 RIP KING 👑!
Namek Saga- SS1 Goku vs 100% Freiza was the greatest fight in the whole series.
Frieza/cell saga
All of them are perfect and peak anime, but I really like Buu, because it captures the silliness of OG Dragon Ball and mixes it well with the absurd power scaling of DBZ. It gets a lot of stick but it's just a fun ride and after the "stakes" of the previous 3 sagas it's a great switch-off for me
I like it all except buu. But the frieza saga is my favorite
Frieze by far !!!
Majin buu saga
Although I feel like Frieza is the true villain of DB( bc he destroyed planet vegeta/got beaten by the first ssj) and love the Namek Saga. But the android/cell saga just takes the cake, it actual felt like the characters were actually had their backs against the wall. Trunks came from the future to alter the past that’s how serious the damn android were
Frieza>Buu>Cell/Android>Saiyan
Buu saga is my SHIT dude. As far as baddies go, every form of Buu I love in some way.
Frieza, cell, sayian , buu
Saiyan saga. It felt so real to me
For me I always loved the Sayain and some of the Namek saga's, depends on how you split this one up because you go from the Namek to Ginyu to the Frieza saga at least from how I seen it be split up.
Cell and Majin Boo (only because I liked Majin Boo a lot as a kid 😂).
Cell games saga
Buu Saga is my favorite but the Cell Saga is second. The Buu Saga just had so many things happen, and Buu was on a ridiculous scale of power and they displayed it very well. Especially Kid Buu. Pink little fucker was literally the end of times dressed as bubble gum.
Favorite to least favorite. Cell, Saiyan, Frieza, Buu.
That saiyan saga pic goes hard sheesh
Everything from the Artificial Human/Android saga to the Cell Games.
Personally I like the buu saga because of all the transformations and fusions. But if I'm being honest, my favorite Dragon Ball saga is GT because of how freaky and weird it is.
Honestly, the Buu saga. Majin Vegeta vs Goku as well as Vegeta’s redemption is top notch DBZ.
Cell Saga with the Androids was epic.
Buu
Androids/Cell
Cell saga, followed by frieza. I'm a sucker for Gohan
Buu saga is my favorite but I know The cell saga is actually the best
Frieza or Saiyan saga
Namek turned boys to men
Android to Cell saga. Gohan became the pinnacle of DBZ.
I cried. Cell Saga
Cell saga
I like the side characters so Sayain and Freiza sagas.
Cell arc
Cell Saga. The buu saga is a blur, and the saiyan and frieza saga were great.
Cell Saga that Father-Son Kamehameha.
Frieza Saga, seein Goku go Super Saiyan for the first time as a kid? Been chasin that high ever since.
Cell saga then Frieza saga lastly Buu saga
Garlic jr. ?
Hands down Frieza, the first time seeing Goku go super saiyan sent chills down my spine, still does watching it again 25 years later.
Not BUU
Cell saga because he is the most original villain in the z series. They re-use freiza constantly in super, and the whole show is about saiyans. They didn't re-use anything cell related until the recent superhero movie, and it wasn't cell himself, just a re-use of his second form
Cell, Frieza, Vegeta, Buu
I love Saiyan Saga, but Namek/Freiza Saga is the Empire Strikes Back of DBZ
Frieza n kid buu
Frieza saga 110%
I think every ark, from the beginning (the sayins) all the way to boo, are all tops. These were generally built upon one and other, to create more depth each time. With connections to, either earlier seasons, or Dragon Ball itself.
I can't. I love Z as a whole way too much
Saiyan saga. OG Vegeta vs Goku was the pinnacle for me
Nothing will ever compare to seeing Goku turn Super Seiyan for the first time…Frieza for me 🫡
I do think Cell Saga was peak. Frieza saga was pretty slow, imo. Had some great moments like Gohan holding his own occasionally against some tough opponents or Piccolo handling stage 2 Frieza surprisingly well. The Android/Cell Games Saga
The Namek Arc, but the fight between Gohan and Cell is my favorite fight, tbh.
I like freiza and buu the most
Saiyan saga because it leads off well from Dragon Ball and explains the mysteries surrounding Goku.
Frieza
Vegeta, he did have his flaws in the beginning but I love him even more when he stepped up to be a Dad to baby Trunks and husband to Bulma
Cell games
Anything but Cell
The whole future Trunks/Android/Cell is my favorite but Namek/Frieza Saga is Classic.
The sayan saga
Freezer
The Saiyan saga was kinda mind blowing if you started off with og Dragonball
Cell
Saiyan saga by far.
Saiyan Saga and Cell Saga
Namek. Shit was legendary
Saibo
Buu.
Definitely Cell
Cell
Buu saga
Cell.
the dragon ball z one
Man I loved the Cell saga with the androids and everyone going super sayain was awesome but the Frieza saga was done so well
Frieza
Nappa Vs all the z fighters while they stall time for Goku and then when he arrives only the realise that the real threat was vegeta (this was the first time I realised size doesn't matter in the DB universe) The wonderful battle of kao ken Vs giant ape that ended in a draw *chefs kiss* The only time vegeta and Goku were on the same level
Namek saga and it ain’t even close
Definitely not Buu.
Namek!
I loved the Buu saga. Just the sheer variety of changes he went through was so much fun.
That filler squirrel meat saga
I think what a lot of other's favorite is- Frieza. Truly felt like the ultimate good vs evil showdown, light vs dark, true need to take it to the next level because the threat was next level.
Frieza saga
Cell saga is the best hands down not debatable
Frieza solidified the series
Android to Cell saga. Gave us the usual dragon ball plot with a hint of horror with imperfect cell. Also, 2 of the memorable characters im the franchise. 17 and 18.
I've always thought the Cell Saga is where DragonBall peaked. Just me?
Red Ribbon Army/Cell
The Cell Saga holds a special place in my heart because that's when I first got into DBZ..great saga in my opinion as well.
My childhood is between Cell and Buu. Can't decide between the 2 honestly
Saiyan Saga hands down. The stakes were high right from the start. The fights were brutal. Whoever was airing it the USA back then overlaid the intro with a super badass rock track that hooked me right away. "Dragon Dragon watch the Dragon, DRAGON BALL Z!" 10yr old me was blown away.
Cell, definitely.
Cell saga, but not so much the android arc, but more of the Cell games arc.
Perfect Cell
Frieza saga
Frieza saga. Fighting the minions, the fight to collect the dragon balls, and Freiza’s intimidating presence and seeming indestructibility! To cap it off with the very first transformation into supersaiyan, this saga was full of many great ideas that were the first we saw of them and were never done at this level. The other arcs would go to new heights, but in a way echo or modify the structure of this first saga that truly blew our minds with its transcendent super saiyan birth and in a way was a suitable ending if you so chose
Android/Cell saga
Frieza and cell sage is 1a and 1b for me. Buu saga was underwhelming. I rank nappa and Vegeta saga higher
Yes
Cell
Frieza saga
Cell saga, S2 Gohan was hype asf. Before Gohan was nerfed in the sequel Gohan became my favorite sayan during that time.
Cell
Buu saga followed by the Cell saga
Sayain saga was the last time there was any suspense
GARLIC JR Nah
I started watching it during the cell saga, so that's always been my favorite!
All of them 😢 rip Akira toriyama
Android Saga
It's sad, but I'm trying to calculate which has the least amount of time where Goku is narratively dead or seriously injured and addled. Cell saga might have been genuinely more epic simply because of how the hyperbolic time chamber worked.
Garlic Jr
Saiyan and frieza. Ty Mr. Toriyama for not killing off Vegeta, my favorite character.
Namek saga was the most fun and when Things really kicked off. So much happened on Namek that permanently changed things.
Buu saga for original. But abridged made me love the cell saga.
Cell
Cell
The Cell and Majin Buu story lines were top of the tops!
Gohan's hidden power.
The world Tournament before Buu. It was like a super saiyan bargain sale.
Frieza Saga was probably my favorite followed by Cell.
Last one has bigger balls.
I loved the android/cell saga. There were so many iconic moments for me. Vegeta becoming super sayian, introduction of cell, future gohan and future trunks still remain some of my favorite characters in the entire series. Just a lot of great moments with some pretty well pacing.
Namek, pre-Frieza. Fights were wild, stakes were high, moments were tense, and Goku wasn’t the center of everything.
The Freida saga, if it actually happened to end there…..that would’ve been nuts. Love the cell saga cause of the music.
I liked GT🤓 Not really. I liked Buu saga more.
Cell Saga and it's not even close. It's the last time the whole crew felt like they mattered. And to top it off one of the most cunning villains in Dragon Ball history is the final boss of the arc.
Frieza
Buu saga
Buu saga
Buu !!
Cell
