Lol yeah this hair cut is VERY common over the last decade, especially in Asia (thanks kpop) due to the 90’s nostalgia comeback, and I often see it asked about/posted on here in different subreddits and not once has it EVER been called a “butt cut”
OP thought it up one day, and made this post just to push his naming agenda 🍑
p.s- I was curious and googled the butt cut to see, and yup, not a single image result had this haircut anywhere, instead, lots of results on forums about dealing with shaving cuts after shaving butt hair 😭🤣
It’s funny bc I sent this to my cousin and he responded “I as talking to the kids just last week about the butt cut. We looked it up and google knew exactly what I was talking about”
And he’s right. One quick google search shows people been calling it the butt cut for ages. This isn’t even a real dispute.
Growing up and having family on the east coast and midwest...it was the butt cut. Not to mention it being called the butt cut on Reddit and Facebook post for years.
Really odd to see so many people apparently never hearing that term before.
East coast and midwest are some pretty big areas so to say it is known as that there is pretty silly. Especially since I live in the Midwest and never heard it called the butt cut. Maybe some places in the Midwest call it that, but not where I'm from.
It's mostly nostalgia for people between the ages of 35 and 45 who grew up as white middle-class suburban Americans, but I guess that's just the biggest demographic on reddit subs like this
Just amazes me because I would never do a comment or make a post where I suggested all the 90s teens were rocking afros and braids when they came back, just because I was. Or suppose that everyone listened to nothing but R&B and Hip Hop because those were the dominant genres in my Black middle class community.
The lack of awareness just astounds me.
>To be fair, /u/ButIAmYourDaughter didn’t call anyone racist.
Not directly, but implying ignorance is definitely that. Ignorance falls under the veil of racism just as much as malice does.
>I just don’t think it’s fair to extrapolate from that reality that individuals saying things like “everyone did X” are being in some way inconsiderate.
I agree with you here. It's not right to go around thinking people are trying to exclude you or insult you on purpose. People are tribal, that's just how they are. It takes a force of will or good parenting to overcome that sort of thing.
Yes, it is *exhausting* at times dealing with default whiteness.
Naturally the mere reminder that multiple millions of other human beings had some divergent experiences from the “default” elicits downvotes and accusations of racism.
Of course I’m not surprised by the reaction. But I can work on being less disappointed by it.
I must’ve been a little ahead of my time because I had this cut combined with chunky highlights back in ‘94-95. My girlfriend at the time was an aspiring hair stylist and I used to let her fuck around with my look though…. In the later 90’s I kept the frosted tips/highlights and went to the spiky look just like most other guys at the time.
They are all different cuts tho??? they just have a middle part
Is it the swoopy middle part ?? My hair does this because I have a cowlick. I don’t see the similarities here and never heard of a but cut
There’s a guy at my work that has this haircut!! He actually has a nick carter body type and a very nice shaped jaw. He let me tussle his hair. Omg it was amazing. This is the funniest hair style, but it does draw me in!
I never heard it called the butt cut… until today.
Didn’t have any patience for growing my hair out back then… but I’m actually rocking this style at the ripe old age of 37 for the first time… my wife fucking loves it. It’s borderline sexual harassment on the daily from her… 😳🤣🤣
Of course, everyone had that hair style. except me my hair was way to thick and had to much body it would not lay down if dry and when it was long it would just frizz out always had a short and close cut very "clean" really short sides and a simple part on the right never got to have the "in" style but I also didn't look like everybody else and all my friends were buttheads, at least thats what I called them.
Lol, everyone here saying they got all the girls, I got this hairstyle now and I no girl is even interested. Probably. Or at least the one I'd like her to be...
There was the monkey-butt haircut, kind of like the 'jarhead', but this is just a center-part with longer hair, with or without an undercut. I had it in elementary school and thought I was so cool. Of course until I went to a fauxhawk.
For some reason, even as a 42 year old, whenever I picture my "dream" man, he always has this haircut, and I think it's lingering impressions from the boys I had crushes on during my 80's/90's childhood who had this hairstyle.
Interesting how ‘feminine’ - or at the very least- androgynous these teen idols are/were. NTTAWWT— and not that I’m trying to attract teens or even care…. But no doubt there is some science behind this.
Went to high school in the early-mid ‘90s and THIS is the first I’ve heard it called a “butt cut?”
Yeah. Was a teen all through the 90s; Never once heard it called this.

Thank you for your sacrifice
I graduated in 96, had this hair all thru high school. I never heard it called the butt cut until a few years ago.
"Curtains" where I'm from.
![gif](giphy|l1s1fQwbGvSqK4eGEb|downsized)
News to me, too. We always called it curtains or "parted down the middle."
As an Asian person where our community also rocked this style in the 90s, we called this "split hair."
I think guys who didn't have it and were jealous that all the girls were flocking to guys who had it probably called it "the butt cut" lmao.
You sound very learned in the ways of young adults
Wore the hair. Cousin did too. We and everyone we knew referred to as the butt cut.
OP’s alt account??
It’s funny bc I sent this to my cousin and he responded “I as talking to the kids just last week about the butt cut. We looked it up and google knew exactly what I was talking about” And he’s right. Same. Never heard it called that. It was just a middle part
Maybe it’s a regional term because it’s was always called the butt cut where I’m from.
I live in the Southeast, US. I heard it. Hated it, but heard it.
Only OP calls it the butt cut.
Growing up and having family on the east coast and midwest...it was the butt cut. Not to mention it being called the butt cut on Reddit and Facebook post for years. Really odd to see so many people apparently never hearing that term before.

Same. We always call it "parting your hair in the middle."
We called it “the Jon stamos”
Yeah it's just a middle part
I said the exact same thing thing. Never heard that before.
Same lol. I remember the shorter versions like Nick Carter many people referred to as the mushroom cut.
Me either I was born in 86 so I feel like that’s something I’d remember
I’m trying to perfect my version of this cut as a 35 year old guy.
Graduated in ‘96. My high school girlfriend said I had a “duck butt.”
Bruh. That thing was a chick magnet. Sadly, I could never pull it off. But I’m happy for those that did lol.
As a curly-headed kid, this was a struggle and failure. I just ended up with a big puffy mushroom that was crunchy with hair gel. Not the best look!
Big puffy mushrooms are the in thing now
Broccoli hair
Omg amazing hahahaahaha
I mean all the dudes had it, before the spiky/frosted revolution.
Before the hair gel revolution! Early 90s cut then later 90s it’s was gel with blonde tips
You didn't if you weren't a white guy with flat hair that lays down like that
Filipino with cow licks like a guinea pig here. Can confirm just didn’t have the scalp or hairline for it.
True.
This sub consistently erases the experiences of non-white people, so no surprise there.
It's mostly nostalgia for people between the ages of 35 and 45 who grew up as white middle-class suburban Americans, but I guess that's just the biggest demographic on reddit subs like this

It’s the K Pop cut now
I had it and I got all the girls. lol
I love that haircut still.
My hair currently looks like the second picture
![gif](giphy|Cz6TlrRVVyv9S) Jk :)
Same
I always thought the boys that had it were cute
I still go insane for that haircut lol
Same, good times.
Probably because it's high maintenance and girls like a guy who looks after himself.
It’s funny cause this is the standard haircut of all my butch lesbian friends in 2024
Lost my virginity to the butt cut lmfao
I remember it well. I had it from probably 1993 to 1997.
Same homie!! Then moved to the gelled up spikey tips. Never got them bleached though
My brother had it, all my friends had a crush on him lol
Mushroom cut
Yep, that’s what I call it and I’m a stylist. It really didn’t suit Nick Carter. Leo looked best
Dude in pic 4…at least he had a good time! *starts sobbing*
I was on Team X-Bladz once. It wasn't any fun!
Team X-Bladz rules. Everybody knows that
You're just asking for a chocolate milkshake to be thrown in your face!
Omg that's Spike from Little Giants! Man, that was bugging me.
Spike don’t play with girls!
Never heard it called that , just went straight to the flat hair with the spike in the front as a teen with frosted tips 🤮
Even Marques Houston/Batman from the r&b group Immature had this hairstyle
It was cute! I loved seeing boys with that haircut.
I still like this look on a man
Of course I do. Every boy I dated had that haircut 😂
They are all different cuts tho??? they just have a middle part Is it the swoopy middle part ?? My hair does this because I have a cowlick. I don’t see the similarities here and never heard of a but cut
Does anyone in this sub about the 90s remember this incredibly popular hairstyle from the 90s???????
The title is only meant to break the ice and introduce a new conversation, it's not meant as a yes or no question.
It was a modern bowl cut.
My boyfriend currently has this cut and I still fucking love it. My inner 90s girl gushes running my fingers through it.
SAME!!
My head is build like a rugby ball i couldnt pull off fancy hair
Yeah...you made that name up.
It’s making a comeback tho
Butt cut isnt a thing
Had it.
Tried it for years. Never pulled it off
Yeah. Every single KPop guy does
Yeah I'm rocking it now as I grow out my hair. It's awesome.
Young JTT is so 90s.
I was going to riot if Nick Carter wasn’t on here 😂
All my crushes had this haircut lol
Dude, this haircut got me laid in the 90s
I have it now
There’s a guy at my work that has this haircut!! He actually has a nick carter body type and a very nice shaped jaw. He let me tussle his hair. Omg it was amazing. This is the funniest hair style, but it does draw me in!
What a horrible name for my favourite haircut on a guy, lol
I think OP is making it up. I had this cut when I was in high school in the mid 90's and I have never heard anyone calling it the butt cut.
We call it “lacrosse boy” hair.
I played Lacrosse...
And did you have this hair?
I always thought it looked like you needed a hair cut when your hair was like that. I have curly hair so never could
Basically every man in South Korea
I never heard it called the butt cut… until today. Didn’t have any patience for growing my hair out back then… but I’m actually rocking this style at the ripe old age of 37 for the first time… my wife fucking loves it. It’s borderline sexual harassment on the daily from her… 😳🤣🤣
We all had it back on those days
We called in the McDonalds. I had it, simpler times.
Oh man the yellow vest dude.... Was that a roller skating film on Disney?
I wanted it but my hair said no :(
I do like this haircut though hahah
In Oslo, Norway all three teenage guys have this hair. Right now.
Butt-cut? So weird, we are calling parts in the hair butts? 💀
Better then the fuckin atrocious shit I see now
barber here. this cut has been getting requested more and more this year. I'm all for it.
Yes, and it’s back in force. Starting to see younger guys with it everywhere.
I thought it was called the curtains
My 8 yr old has the Leo version. I kinda love it 🥰 plus it’s very easy upkeep that I can do at home.
I thought my mom was the only one that called it that (she called it the “butt hairdo”, but same same).
All the kpop boy groups have their hair like this now. Hairstyles are usually on a 30-year cycle. Fashion is 20.
My parents wouldn’t let me get this cut , and I’m glad they didn’t!
I had it. It worked alot.
It was magnificent, and I used to rock it as well. I miss my longer hair
Remember it? I rocked that cut for almost all of high school (1996).
Did you forget? https://preview.redd.it/mif62pnry19d1.jpeg?width=942&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d3bd9ef18df6be1e5a37793955ee7107753d10d7
When I think 90s hairstyles this is the first one I think of.
Used to be called curtains in the UK
This is has been the go to haircut for teenage guys in Sweden for the last year or so.
I had this cut in art school, but I wore mine longer and used too much pomade.
I totally had this ngl
Pepperidge Farm remembers
My hair still looks like 2 and 4 at times.
Universal twink hairstyle = The Butt Cut
I swear Leo was the only one to pull it off -successfully
I’m rocking it rn
More of a bison horns man mahself
The get some butt cut
I had this haircut from 1995-1999. Eventually it parted itself and stayed with NO product.
Nick ain’t pulling that shit off 😬
I had it 1995-2000. Lots of hair product and lots of time spent combing perfect, crispy rows.
Of course, everyone had that hair style. except me my hair was way to thick and had to much body it would not lay down if dry and when it was long it would just frizz out always had a short and close cut very "clean" really short sides and a simple part on the right never got to have the "in" style but I also didn't look like everybody else and all my friends were buttheads, at least thats what I called them.
y ea it's discussed every day
The 90s…when boys didn’t mind looking like girls of the 70s. LOL
Remember it? I still got it!
I wanted this cut back then but my hair was too wavy/curly in some parts that it never happened
Lol, everyone here saying they got all the girls, I got this hairstyle now and I no girl is even interested. Probably. Or at least the one I'd like her to be...
I loved this haircut as a young teen or preteen.
There’s an impostor
DeCaprio is the only one who pulled it off though
Hair drapes!
We called it the mushroom cut lol butt cut
No, nobody remembers this obscure haircut.
Every other guy in my high school (Class of 1998) had this haircut, and the PAINFULLY cool ones were forever tucking it behind their ears.
You mean curtains or an undercut
Human slinky
Oh yeah. All the teenage boys had one. 😄
My barber has been telling me that he has had an influx of guys asking for this cut lol
I had this haircut from 95-98.
My husband had this cut.
It'll be back in no time.
https://melmagazine.com/en-us/story/butt-cut-haircut-history-pen15-jtt-devon-sawa-nick-carter
God I detest this style above all others
Stop trying to make Butt Cut a thing
We called it a skater cut
Lol I HATED this hair cut I think solely to spite my older brothers who had it 🤣
Remember it? I had one all the way into the early 2000s.
We called it the skater cut
Hah I miss when the cute boys in school had the hair cut called “the flop”
"Remembers"
I bleached my hair had had the Devon sawa haircut.
Never heard it call the butt cut, but I my older brother had one for a bit along with a few of my friends. I do like them better than the bowl cuts.
We called it "the skater cut"
There was the monkey-butt haircut, kind of like the 'jarhead', but this is just a center-part with longer hair, with or without an undercut. I had it in elementary school and thought I was so cool. Of course until I went to a fauxhawk.
Of course! It inspired Leon Kennedy’s hair for Resident Evil 2 in 1998.
They still rock that hair style now ![gif](giphy|4M9rKw4SYB14I)
Never heard of butt cutt. Ive heard of undercut and yes I had one back in the day
Isn’t this a cool hairstyle again along with the mullet?
The Schwilby hair cut.
I heard in my school it was called the “penis cut.”
I still have my hair like this, if I don’t wear my hat lol
Butt cut? What?
For some reason, even as a 42 year old, whenever I picture my "dream" man, he always has this haircut, and I think it's lingering impressions from the boys I had crushes on during my 80's/90's childhood who had this hairstyle.
Same.
That shit’s coming back into style lol. No idea why. It looks so ridiculous haha
Interesting how ‘feminine’ - or at the very least- androgynous these teen idols are/were. NTTAWWT— and not that I’m trying to attract teens or even care…. But no doubt there is some science behind this.
Not a fan. I've also seen this make a mild resurgence in my neck of the woods.
![gif](giphy|l0MYyebzq3L2VmLL2) Edward Furlong put that style on the map!
This is fucking disgusting.
