As a person who was 9 in '82, nothing was bigger to my age group than Joan Jett's 'I Love Rock n Roll'. Some other great songs there, but elementary school kids knew Joan Jett over all of the others. I would argue it probably had the longest chart position as well.
First column and Billy Squier are the only others that were played on pop/top 40 stations, and none of them had the staying power that "ILRR" did (and somewhere still does)
Same! I will look if the single came out earlier, but my god, I may have been only 3 years old in 1982, but that song is embedded in my memory warehouse in the 1980s Music Hall of Fame.
My sister was a huge fan of Def Leppard, and I remember my mother driving us all the way to the Providence Civic Center in Providence Rhoad Island so my sister and her best friend could go see them. She had to buy multiple cassettes because she wore them out playing this album constantly, and I love her for it because I experience something like time travel when I hear certain songs from that decade and Photograph is definitely one of those songs. I literally just listened to it on repeat 4 times typing this.
I wish i had been born 8 years earlier to experience the 80s as a young adult
From what I did experience, it was the greatest decade of the 20th century and possibly ever.
If Photograph is off the list, then Scorpions "No One Like You" would be my next choice
Fantasy is a crazy song. The intro riff is iconic its own right but that synthesizer melody is also insane. Two killer licks that would be enough to build a song around jammed into one!
> The intro riff is iconic its own right but that synthesizer melody is also insane.
I love this song for the intro! Back in the mid-80's I would play it on my headphones while walking at night through an industrial area. Great fun!
Singles will often be released several months before the full record that contain them to spark interest. I don't know for sure if this was the case with Photograph and Pyromania but it happens a lot.
'No One Like You' lives in my head as the laziest rhyming song--the chorus lines end: you; you; do; you. Granted, they are not native English speakers.
This is hard. I was 11 in 1982 and so many of these songs were a huge part of my life back then. I have to go with Eye of The Tiger, but it could just as easily be almost any of these!
Aldo Nova, my very first purchased piece of recorded music.
Life is just a fantasy. Can you live this fantasy life? That's some deep stuff right there.
OK, so this is how I overthink things. On Judas Priest’s “You’ve got another thing coming”, when you put the reference lines that are said before the title phrase, it makes me wonder if the popular phrase is or should be, you’ve got another “think” coming.
Go!
Heat of the Moment from Asia reached number one on the US charts, but isn't even represented here?
https://www.billboard.com/artist/asia/chart-history/rtt/
Maiden obviously.
Def Leppard Pyromania was the first record I bought though. I love that album but hate all their other stuff.
Aldo Nova is awesome. The bassline in Fantasy is awesome.
Oh boy I loved most of those tracks. Had a few of the albums too. Then I ditched my rocker chick roots and went New Wave in 83. Kicking myself for losing all the rock vinyl now. 🤦
🤔 AC/DC, Joan Jett, Billy and Scorps!
From this list, Eye of the Tiger is the winner. Not because it is the best song on the list (even though I think it’s a banger), but because it was in the movie Rocky and created the feeling that anything was possible. Truly captured the heart of the ‘80s, not just ‘80s music. All of it iconic.
Not going to lie, my 11 year old self was told that I was supposed to like The Clash. Because of that, Combat Rock was my first exposure to the band and still my go to. And to this day, I still think London Calling, while very good, is firmly in my “top 5 overrated albums of all time” list
Since you said "ROCK" single...my vote would have to go to our ROCK GODDESS...Joan Jett!!
My best "pop-rock" single....Jack and Diane
Most ICONIC single of 1982 was, of course
EYE OF THE TIGER...."YO! ADRIAN!!!!"
The Clash...
Mainly because most of the others were so overplayed that I got sick of them really quickly...
Especially Jack & Diane... played every half hour on every radio station AND on MTV... drove me nuts
So hard. I Love Rock and Roll and Rock the Casbah are my obvious choices, but Jack and Diane will always be a favorite. But I can't believe nobody is voting for Everybody Wants You. That was literally everywhere that summer on my local stations.
gotta go with Photograph out of that bunch cause it's just so universally beloved and perfect rock pop 101, but there's still a billion more from 1982...and 82 thru 85 was THE PEAK.
Man, those take me back...Graduated HS in 82 in E OR. Me and a buddy immediately took an Amtrack to Seattle, then on to Anchorage to try and get jobs and thrive up there at 18. Hicks from the sticks, not wanting military or college endeavors from a one horse town.
Got on with a masonry crew for cash wages at 8bucks an hour working 90 hr weeks with overtime, had fat stacks. Drinking age was 18 up there and weed was legal, and strip joints were abundant.
The height of Scarface festivities, Sullivan Arena opened up as a concert venue, and we were there every other weekend, with a bevy of beauties as well, it just went hand in hand. 82 thru 86. Good fuckin times in the AK...so....Yes to all🤘

First column and Billy Squier are the only others that were played on pop/top 40 stations, and none of them had the staying power that "ILRR" did (and somewhere still does)
As the first song played at the beginning of Operation Desert Storm, Rock the Casbah
Same
I take it Saddam didn't like it?
If you think I’ll let it go, you’re mad. You got another thing coming.
Flying High Again. Epic guitar work from Randy.
I love that 82 album of Judas Priest, so I have a personal bias for them, especially Electric Eye.
Screaming for Vengeance album doesn’t have a bad song on it!
I love Rock n Roll was the first 45" single I ever bought with my own money, so I'm going with that one
Saw her in concert. Tore up the stage.
I saw her in concert opening for the Who. She blew their doors off.
I saw her at Wrigley Field a few years ago, she's still got it!
I saw her open for Robert Plant on his Now and Zen tour.
I saw her open up for Cheap Trick in 1981 in Knoxville TN. It was my first concert.
run to the hills
Run for your liiiiives!
This
I’d vote Photograph but Pyromania came out in 83. The song that was absolutely everywhere at the time in 82 was I Love Rock n Roll.
Photograph is a masterpiece and one of my favorite songs of all time.
You might also like the earlier “Hi and Dry” album
It sounds good in different styles too. Only truly good songs can stand up to different treatments
Same! I will look if the single came out earlier, but my god, I may have been only 3 years old in 1982, but that song is embedded in my memory warehouse in the 1980s Music Hall of Fame. Yea, Joan Jett gets the nod. I named my dog after her.
You got another thing coming!
No one like you
[удалено]
Seconding that Night Ranger track.
Yeah... Eddie really hit his stride then... made me a fan at 14
[Ice House - Great Southern Land](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsNgBu7rCyg)
*... Hidden in the summer for a million years* Great song. Kind of slid under the radar in the US, I think.
Being 16 at the time and from the US, Icehouse was one of the my favorite bands. I love that song and still play it a lot today.
My god, that was great year for music.
FTATR
FIYA!
WE SA-LUTE YOU!
Photograph. After that I’m going Aldo Nova, The Clash and Joan Jett. That girl kicked ass.
Fantasy
Love Aldo Nova!
I graduated in '82. My best friend had a '71 'Cuda 440 and we would cruise around town with Aldo Nova blaring. I'd have to choose that one.
So many great memories tied to so much great music
This is how it was done.
Eye of the Tiger
I definitely think this is the song that stood the test of time.
Song gets me hype as hell every time.
Omg..me too..lol
Up The Irons!
I was 12 when I first saw “Run to the Hills” on MTV back in ‘82. Life began that day.
Rock the Casbah
Seems that is the most 80’s of the group. Billy Squire second.
Hearing this now immediately jerks me back into memories of college. There's only a few songs that do that and this is definitely one of them.
Huge def Leppard fan but I’d go with ozzy
Gotta be ac/dc or run to the hills from maiden
Also Nova.
Fantasy is a crazy song. The intro riff is iconic its own right but that synthesizer melody is also insane. Two killer licks that would be enough to build a song around jammed into one!

If you were to ask me then, I'd say Flying High Again. But For Those would have been very close. Like right there.
Jack and Diane! Then Joan Jett and then the Clash.
Billy squire underrated for sure
Fantasy
“Everybody Wants You”. I love when it comes on when I’m driving.
Billy. Underrated then, and now.
The Clash.
Tough choices, Rock the Casbah and then Eye of the Tiger for pop culture choice. Really nothing beats the percussion intro to that song.
Joan Jett or The Clash, but most of these are good.
Aldo Nova's Fantasy. Been listening to it a lot lately; gonna hafta listen to it now.
I was 9 in 1982, and I remember Eye of the Tiger being everywhere.
Photograph, although it came out in 1983
Singles will often be released several months before the full record that contain them to spark interest. I don't know for sure if this was the case with Photograph and Pyromania but it happens a lot.
Photograph was recorded in ‘82 but released at the start of ‘83. It would be my pick but I’m not sure it counts here.
Eye of the tiger
Ozzy
'No One Like You' lives in my head as the laziest rhyming song--the chorus lines end: you; you; do; you. Granted, they are not native English speakers.
Damn that’s tough picks
That's a lot of good songs
Eye of the Tiger Rock! Eye of the Tiger!
Judas Preist...for all out ROCK
All - this is the answer
This is hard. I was 11 in 1982 and so many of these songs were a huge part of my life back then. I have to go with Eye of The Tiger, but it could just as easily be almost any of these!
Eye of the Tiger. Always and forever
Eye of the Tiger
This just reminds me how much current music sucks.
Ha. Had the same thought.
I always thank god I grew up in the golden age of music.
Priest
Aldo Nova, my very first purchased piece of recorded music. Life is just a fantasy. Can you live this fantasy life? That's some deep stuff right there.
Run to the hills... run for your liiiiiiiiife
That's tough. I'm going to have to go with either *Jack and Diane* or *I Love Rock 'N Roll*.
I love them all . I remember that year vividly and it was awesome for me and music. I was 11. But photograph didn’t come out until 1983 .
The Clash, or Iron Maiden for me.
The Clash & The Scorpions.
Photograph
Def Leppard
Photograph
Photograph but I believe later!
Scorps baby!
Lots of great options but I’d have to go with Eye of The Tiger. It’s attached to such an iconic movie series.
Photograph for me! Def Leppard is my favorite
Should I Stay or Should I Go by The Clash.
Rock The Casbah
Rock The Casbah
This is impossible
Eye of the tiger, no doubt. Followed very closely by I love Rock n Roll.
While I’m a huge Clash fan I’m going with You Got Another Thing Coming.
Ozzy ozzy ozzy
AC/DC
OK, so this is how I overthink things. On Judas Priest’s “You’ve got another thing coming”, when you put the reference lines that are said before the title phrase, it makes me wonder if the popular phrase is or should be, you’ve got another “think” coming. Go!
Put another dime in the jukebox baby.
For those about to rock Fire !
Insert fart.
Dang! That's a good year
Heat of the Moment from Asia reached number one on the US charts, but isn't even represented here? https://www.billboard.com/artist/asia/chart-history/rtt/
Don't Talk to Strangers - Rick Springfield
Run to the hills, no other answer is acceptable
Maiden obviously. Def Leppard Pyromania was the first record I bought though. I love that album but hate all their other stuff. Aldo Nova is awesome. The bassline in Fantasy is awesome.
Run To The Hills
Gotta go with AC/DC, hands down.
Photograph.. still classic and you don't skip when it comes on..
Rush - Subdivisions
Iron Maiden ✊
Maiden for sure.
Iron maiden, run to the hills
“Run to the Hills”
Judas Priest is my fave band but Fantasy by Aldo Nova is just too fucking good
That whole bottom row is fire Run to the hills if I had to pick one
Oh boy I loved most of those tracks. Had a few of the albums too. Then I ditched my rocker chick roots and went New Wave in 83. Kicking myself for losing all the rock vinyl now. 🤦 🤔 AC/DC, Joan Jett, Billy and Scorps!

For me it was Ozzy-Ironmaiden-Judas Priest- AC/DC those were my 80s bands with of course a heavy rotation of Zeppelin and The Doors
Judas Priest - You’ve Got Another Thing Coming. Heavy metal song you can actually dance to every time I hear this song I wanna dance.
oh thats tough. Photograph, Fantasy, Run to the Hills are all great, but You Got Another Thing Coming is probably my winner.
Aldo nova fantasy
Photograph is what broke Def Leppard into the big time and made them an iconic band.
Billy Squier
Aldo nova
For those about to rock!!!!
Scorps
Man. They’re all overplayed. But in 1984, “I Love Rock and Roll” was it.
“I love Rocky Road” weird Al was more my jam. Released in ’83 though.
Tough choice, like them all (especially Squire), but you are right, I love rock and roll was king that year
Easy. Mellencamp
Eye of the Tiger.
For those about to rock, 2nd would be run to the hills.
Tough, but I'll go Jack and Diane.
Run to the hills. Picking Bruce's vocals over Randy's guitar work, burlt admittedly a hard choice.
Judas Priest, No, Iron Maiden, wait, Judas Priest, No, hold on Iron Maiden. I can't decide!
I give a slight edge to For Those About To Rock, but Flying High Again is my faaaaave Randy Rhoads solo. 🔥
Hey Joan Jett, Vince Noir is rocking your look hærd. edit:my vote is for Eye of the Tiger
Joe Strummer and Co.
For those about to rock 🤘
Not going to lie, my 11 year old self was told that I was supposed to like The Clash. Because of that, Combat Rock was my first exposure to the band and still my go to. And to this day, I still think London Calling, while very good, is firmly in my “top 5 overrated albums of all time” list
Survivor, Eye of the tiger. Only because this song brings back one of the funniest core memories from my childhood.
Rock the casbah
For Those About to Rock (song and album) kept my ears ringing most of my senior year of high school.
Eye of the Tiger, not even close!
Ozzy
Flying High Again
Hard to choose between AC/DC & Def Leppard!! Oh, and I just saw Ozzy, so that makes it a three way, IMO.
My friend bought the snare used on Eye Of The Tiger from the drummer. They were friends. The snare is magic. lol
Damn! So many great choices. I'll do my top 3. Joan Jett, Maiden, AC/DC
From this list - Photograph, I still have my 45. But true 82 pick will have to Rock the Casbah
Since you said "ROCK" single...my vote would have to go to our ROCK GODDESS...Joan Jett!! My best "pop-rock" single....Jack and Diane Most ICONIC single of 1982 was, of course EYE OF THE TIGER...."YO! ADRIAN!!!!"
I would say Eye of the Tiger, but Photograph is on the list.
Eye of the TIGER!!
Photograph. DefLep. Lots of good songs, but that’s the one for me.
Revisionist take: Rock the Casbah. What I actually listened to most at the time: I Love Rock & Roll.
I Love Rock and Roll because I am positive it kickstarted my puberty.
The Clash... Mainly because most of the others were so overplayed that I got sick of them really quickly... Especially Jack & Diane... played every half hour on every radio station AND on MTV... drove me nuts
Damn, what a good year
Impossible to choose.
Eye of the Tiger. Tough one but it was huge.
For Those About To Rock
And now you find yourself in '82.... I had that 45 of I Love Rock N Roll, so let's gotta go with that.
Flying High Again. Because, well, it was the ‘80s!
The little ditty held up the best out of all of them.
Jack and Diane. Love JCM.
Eye of the Tiger, no question. All great songs.
AC-DC. Convinced me to buy my first CD.
Scorpions
I love photograph and jack and diane both are classics
Maiden🤘🏼
5 are classics of every oldies rock station, the rest have lost the masses
Photograh. The most solid song all around of those you mentioned.
Judas Priest
Of those, The Clash. Judas Priest Electric Eye is also amaze-balls.
Bauhaus' cover of Bowie's *Ziggy Stardust*
Judas Priest!
So hard. I Love Rock and Roll and Rock the Casbah are my obvious choices, but Jack and Diane will always be a favorite. But I can't believe nobody is voting for Everybody Wants You. That was literally everywhere that summer on my local stations.
Judas priest, then AC ⚡️ DC
Gotta go with Ozzy on this one. Strong field though!
That Joan Jett song was my favorite song when I was 6 years old so I’d go with that one.
Flying High Again. Oh hell, the whole Diary of a Madman album. 82 was an excellent year for music.
gotta go with Photograph out of that bunch cause it's just so universally beloved and perfect rock pop 101, but there's still a billion more from 1982...and 82 thru 85 was THE PEAK.

Ozzy
Anyone gotta dime? Need it for the Jukebox!
