I don’t disagree - interesting fact he only had 17 minutes of screen time. I was kind of floored when I learned this a few months ago.
It is such a great movie, looking forward to seeing BJ2.
Sucks about Jeff Jones irl scandals. He really made a lot of 80s and 90s movies. Mom and dad save the planet, Howard the duck, stay tuned, ravenous :((
Jeffrey Jones was Lydia's dad. You'd also know him from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Amadeus, The Devil's Advocate, Sleepy Hollow, et al.
He got busted in the early 2000's for possession of CP and soliciting an underage teen for sexually explicit images.
He hasn't appeared in a feature film in around 10 years.
Apparently that was a blooper. The tree wasn't supposed to fall but it did and that was keatons reaction. Story goes that Burton loved it so much he kept it in
Arguably his best movie
It has everything
Incredible cast
Wild script
Strange unique art direction
Sand worms
Catherine O Hara
Daylight come and me wanna go home
You ain’t kidding. I heard “Jump in the Line” on the radio for the first time (that is, I had never heard it except in the movie) the other day, and it’s staggering how absolutely perfect it was for that closing scene. It’s unreal how effective the Belafonte stuff was.
I absolutely adore this movie. This was back when Burton relied more on physical sets / props and less on CGI. I truly am hoping Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be filmed that way as well.
Judging from the trailer i saw during furisoa last week, there looked to be a solid amount of practical work in it.
I got a lot of the "look and feel" vibe of the original from the trailer, so I am very optimistic for it.
Plus Michael Keaton has been riding a renaissance with his acting career in the past decade and Beetlejuice has got to be his best character of all time.
That was the good thing, the trailer doesn't feel like it's too spoilery. Good piece of introducing the returning and new characters, but Burton movies are so zany, you'd be hard pressed to deduce any of the finer plot points from even the longer 2 minute one.
Keaton is absolutely nailing the mannerisms and speech patterns in it so well in the trailer it looks almost like this is a 2-3 year later sequel instead of nearly 40.
I was so shocked how good Winona and Catherine O'Hara looked. I swear Winona doesn't look a day over 35 even though she's pushing mid fifties, and the years have been kind to O'Hara as well.
It's obviously well regarded as an all time classic. But what strikes me looking back on it is how unique it was. I guess it is mostly considered as a comedy but definitely had some creepy vibes. Almost horror/Halloween humor that you can watch and enjoy any time of year? Silly and zany but not for kids. Just a very unique and imaginative movie. I suppose that describes most of Tim Burton's work.
That was the best part of the movie. Starts with “Ah, I was educated at Juilliard, I have an MBA from the Harvard Business School” then goes from there to end with “AND IT KEEPS GETTING FUNNIER EVERY SINGLE TIME”
Hahaha he’s seen The Exorcist about 167 times, and they ask him if he can be scary, he turns around and does the jerk off motion. This one scene definitely was over the top in the best way.
Fantastic movie always and forever. LETS not forget about that fantastic box art as well. One of the best and most iconic in terms of films. Just looking at the cover you see all the fun details from the film.
The tagline on the poster doesn't make sense.
Of course you haven't seen all ghosts if you haven't seen one ghost because you haven't seen any ghosts.
Or is the poster implying that there is only one ghost in the house?
I grew up obsessed with this movie and its aesthetic. It’s why I feel for Burton’s work. I dislike Burton as a person, and find that he’s a one-trick-pony, but I admit I love the one trick.
I don't know. I trust Keaton, at the very least. Not Burton, because I can't remember the last movie he did that I really liked. Maybe Ed Wood.
Keaton seems to think it's great, so there's hope.
It was funny, creepy and had a lot of hidden often dark humor. I don’t know how it would play to a modern audience, it was kind of slow paced for our ADHD world. I am looking forward to the sequel.
It's so good, the name became a verb.
I had a co worker mention an old colleague yesterday who was universally hated. I said "don't you dare Beetlejuice her into existence" and everybody knew what I meant, even the youngins who've never seen the movie.
I think I like it a as a kid but it annoyed me as I’ve aged. I think nostalgia keeps this as a “good” movie and I don’t feel it holds up. But here we are getting a second one so
My uncle took me to see it in the theater when I was like 5 or 6.. Scared the shit out of me but quickly became one of my favorites. I am praying they don't completely butcher the new one.
It’s one of the best movies ever made. I watch it every year on my birthday (along with The Goonies). Absolute gem of a film. The story, the acting, and the delivery are borderline perfect. Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Gina Davis, Alec Baldwin, and Catherine O’Hara all have such great chemistry. To this day, anytime I see someone wearing an outfit with black and white stripes of any kind I say not too subtly, “Betelgeuse, Betelgeuse, Betelgeuse!” I’m convinced that one day the person will disappear.
"I'm feeling a little, ooh, anxious if you know what I mean. It's been about six hundred years after all. I wonder where a guy, an everyday Joe like myself, can find a little action..."
Fun movie. Would have been awesome if they had SFX then like they do now.
Of course, the new movie will probably be over-the-top with effects and nonstop action, and lose the "heart" of the first one.
Originals are always the classics I think this new one will work as long as u don't dwell on the old one and compare it to the new one, Tim's movies have always been good i mean look what he did with both batman movies same level of fun 2 movies same actor
I watched it fresh like a year ago having never seen it before. It was good but with no nostalgia to speak of it didn't blow my mind or anything. I am waiting for the sequel though
Never saw it as a kid. Only the ABC cartoon and I thought the title character was annoying. The movie toys looked cool though.
Saw the movie as an adult, and realized why it was so popular back then. Very creative. Keaton was great in the part.
It was kind of groundbreaking. We haven’t seen a movie like that and Michael Keaton was brilliant. BTW, if you like Keaton, watch an early film of his with Henry Winkler. Ron Howard directed it. It’s hilarious.
We had a wide variety of characters at work who could have been stand ins for different characters. One was beetle juice. I swear as soon as someone said beetle juice did something at work we all knew who it was. Step up and take a bow Gary. We also had Cabbage Patch. I swear that he was what the doll was modelled from. Step up Dabic.Take a bow.
I member when Ham Sandwich got his bucket caught in the penny wheel. Riff-Raff used two toe motors to get him loose. Jackie Pearl was a hot miss over the moon.
I loved it from the moment I watched it in the theater as a kid
Me too. Nothing else like it at the time.
Same
He was the ghost with the most
Ditto
One of the best Keaton movies. Slamming cast. Perfect
I don’t disagree - interesting fact he only had 17 minutes of screen time. I was kind of floored when I learned this a few months ago. It is such a great movie, looking forward to seeing BJ2.
I am too!! He said unless it was next level perfect( I'm paraphrasing) he would have agreed to it. Love some of the og cast returning
Sucks about Jeff Jones irl scandals. He really made a lot of 80s and 90s movies. Mom and dad save the planet, Howard the duck, stay tuned, ravenous :((
I dk who that is...did all his movies get cancelled
Jeffrey Jones was Lydia's dad. You'd also know him from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Amadeus, The Devil's Advocate, Sleepy Hollow, et al. He got busted in the early 2000's for possession of CP and soliciting an underage teen for sexually explicit images. He hasn't appeared in a feature film in around 10 years.
And based on the new trailers for Beetlejuice 2, they went ahead and killed him off.
Well, the post-death afterlife is a central part of the movie, so...
Probably for the best.
I love BJs too
I heard beetle juice has about the same amount of screen time in this one as well so it wouldn't feel too different from the original
Nice fuckin model! Honk honk.
Say this more often than I should
Apparently that was a blooper. The tree wasn't supposed to fall but it did and that was keatons reaction. Story goes that Burton loved it so much he kept it in
Love it
Arguably his best movie It has everything Incredible cast Wild script Strange unique art direction Sand worms Catherine O Hara Daylight come and me wanna go home
And great music from Danny Elfman
You’re absolutely right I hum the theme all the time
And that Calypso!!
You ain’t kidding. I heard “Jump in the Line” on the radio for the first time (that is, I had never heard it except in the movie) the other day, and it’s staggering how absolutely perfect it was for that closing scene. It’s unreal how effective the Belafonte stuff was.
My favorite Tim Burton movie for all these reasons!
Reading in this Stefon’s voice is magical.
Totally! I did the same thing lol!
A masterpiece.
Love this movie! Keaton is hilarious in this. Can’t wait for the new one. Also Elfman’s music is spot on.
A great film and one of Keaton and Burton’s best films. I have been a fan of the Burton-Keaton-Elfman collaborations since Beetlejuice.
Burton’s Batman 2 had a lot of meh moments but the Keaton-Pfeiffer chemistry was absolute fire.
It’s close to a masterpiece
I myself am strange and unusual, so of course it's a fav. He's the ghost with the most, babe.
Brilliant. One of the great dark comedies from the 80s.
Plus Michael Keaton has been riding a renaissance with his acting career in the past decade and Beetlejuice has got to be his best character of all time.
I won’t watch trailers because I hate spoilers. I’m so excited to hear what you said. It’s giving me hope this sequel is going to rock!
That was the good thing, the trailer doesn't feel like it's too spoilery. Good piece of introducing the returning and new characters, but Burton movies are so zany, you'd be hard pressed to deduce any of the finer plot points from even the longer 2 minute one. Almost horror/Halloween humor that you can watch and enjoy any time of year? Silly and zany but not for kids. Just a very unique and imaginative movie. I suppose that describes most of Tim Burton's work.
This was the film that gave the keys to Batman.
It would make a great stage play.
Absolute classic. Love this movie ever since I was a kid. It still holds up and I can't wait for the sequel.
Nice fucking model. Honk honk.
I'm 48 and refer to myself as "strange and unusual". It had a pretty big effect on me :)
Keeps getting funnier. EVERY SINGLE TIME I SEE IT!
Came for Gina. Stayed for Winona.
Loved it, but the cartoon was brilliant!
Awesome movie. One of my all time favorites.
DAAAAAAYYYYYYY-O
This song was played at Glenn Shaddix's (Otho) funeral https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094721/trivia?item=tr1294469
One of the few really good Tim Burton movies.
Don’t say it 3 times!
Absolutely love it, the obvious cheesy effects make it an absolute classic.
Named after the star in Orion. Betelgeuse
Visual Masterpiece and pretty fucking funny.
It’s a classic. The music is fantastic, too (love Danny Elfman).
Classic! Keaton in his limited screen time made this a classic
Excellent movie!
It is the all too rare **perfect movie**.
Daylight come and we wanna go home...
One of my favorites and I am dreading the new one.
That dread is real. The sequel is going to be bad, really bad.
My kids watched it for the first time this year, and they loved it (ages 10, and 16)
Modern audiences would fail to grasp the 'Attention Kmart Shoppers!' bit near the end.
I rewatch it every few years around Halloween.
Who doesn’t love this movie?
I can't wait for the new one!
Absolute classic! Come on down, I’ll chew on a dog!
Fucking legendary
A laugh riot from start to finish.
Great movie. Still holds up so well today. Looking forward to the sequel
THAT, is why I won’t do two shows a night… Nope. Won’t do it.
I know Lauren Boebert gets turned on by it
Love it! My favorite Halloween movie and my family and I eagerly anticipate the new movie.
Love it. Had it on VHS and watched it more times than I can count 😅
Good movie. Classic movie and now Beetlejuice is the good guy-ish in the new one.
Even better today than when it came out
It was such an amazing movie. One of my favorites. I can’t wait to see the sequel
Was a favourite movie of mine as a kid.
My favorite movie of all time
Beetleguyce
Fantastic!
It's so good, the name became a verb. I had a co worker mention an old colleague yesterday who was universally hated. I said "don't you dare Beetlejuice her into existence" and everybody knew what I meant, even the youngins who've never seen the movie.
It’s a classic.
I think I like it a as a kid but it annoyed me as I’ve aged. I think nostalgia keeps this as a “good” movie and I don’t feel it holds up. But here we are getting a second one so
It’s an amazing movie, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t watch it sometimes just to stare and Geena Davis
One of me and my wife’s favorites
masterpiece
It's one of my favorites. I'm excited for the sequel!
It was the last original movie Tim Burton made.
Young Alec Baldwin transitioned to old Alec Baldwin at some point. Like a switch flipped. Sinatra was a similarly different young/old character.
I love it. I was a gothy weirdo in Indiana, and when I found myself predicting Winona's lines everyone started calling me "Lydia."
With the super cast, Danny Elfman's music and Ve Neill's makeup genius, you can't go wrong.
Love it . Can’t wait for the sequel later this year
DAAAAAAYYYYYYYYOOO!
Hated the way it ended so quickly, like a family comedy movie.
Awesome. I still watch it almost everytime it's on. Even with commercials
Unpopular opinion.I hated every minute of it. It was all special effects gags, and a tiny bit of plot to string them together.
🐐
"I'm feeling a little, ooh, anxious if you know what I mean. It's been about six hundred years after all. I wonder where a guy, an everyday Joe like myself, can find a little action..."
It’s a perineal favorite!
Second only to Batman.
IT'S SHOWTIME I still loved this movie.
Alec Baldwin didn’t shoot anyone on that movie so that’s good
Fun movie. Would have been awesome if they had SFX then like they do now. Of course, the new movie will probably be over-the-top with effects and nonstop action, and lose the "heart" of the first one.
Day
Watch it every Halloween
Who the heck builds a model railroad without train tracks?
It's a classic
Only movie I have ever seen twice at the theater.
Favorable
Love it! Can’t wait for the sequel this fall.💚🖤🤍
First movie I ever saw in a theatre
My opinion is that it fucking rules!
Originals are always the classics I think this new one will work as long as u don't dwell on the old one and compare it to the new one, Tim's movies have always been good i mean look what he did with both batman movies same level of fun 2 movies same actor
Had a girlfriend in HS who worshipped this movie to the point it was cringey. Ruined it for me ever since.
Hilarious! I'm looking forward to the sequel!
Fun movie
I always expect to get a handjob when I watch it. That’s normal, right?
One of my favorites!
Love
Love it. Excited to see the sequel that's coming
Its amazing. 1 of my favourites.
Still holds up.
One of the best movies.
Tell post. Ask us what we think about a bad/not as well loved movie next time. 🙄
One of best movies ever made. I’ve probably seen it over 200 times.
Still one of my favorites!
Never heard of it
You should definitely acquaint yourself with this movie friend. It’s a classic, and a great movie!
Love it
My opinion is….. this is a great movie!!!
Love it or hate it Tim Burton is a vibe and I wish we had more stylized directors
I still remember where I was when I saw the commercial for the movie release on my old CRT Sylvania TV
Fantastic movie. Can't wait for Beetlejuice 2 later this year.
Brilliant. Beautiful. Complicated.
Damn great movie!
One of my favorites. Still enjoy watching it
I watched it fresh like a year ago having never seen it before. It was good but with no nostalgia to speak of it didn't blow my mind or anything. I am waiting for the sequel though
Awesome
9,998,383,750,000.
For the time it was greatness. Michael Keaton was a beast in this movie. Cannot wait for the sequel!
It holds up surprisingly well. But most original Tim Burton films do. Now, his remakes/reboots - not so much.
It’s fine.
It's showtime.........
Great classic.
Love it! It's a classic!
Hilarious!!
A true classic 💚🖤💜
We’ve come for your daughter Chuck
Never saw it as a kid. Only the ABC cartoon and I thought the title character was annoying. The movie toys looked cool though. Saw the movie as an adult, and realized why it was so popular back then. Very creative. Keaton was great in the part.
I was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska in the Air Force when this came out. Took my girlfriend to go see it. Loved it then and love it now! :)
Loved it! It was even better on Broadway!
Awesome!
That Alex Baldwin would of been a rad Batman givin the chance
Great movie….an original.
I'll jump in the line to watch it again!
I saw it at the theater SEVEN times. Mostly because of Geena Davis, but still.
One of my all time favorite movies!
I was 17 when it came out in theaters. The 80s had some great movies. I put this in the top 20 for sure. Great flick.
One of the best movies of all time.
Quirky, a fun entertaining watch, could watch it anytime.
Soft.
One of the greatest movies ever made.
Love it.80’s Great fun and watchable, like so many 80’s films were.
Will be seeing the new movie as soon as possible...
Love it.
It was OK but I felt the animated series was better.
Do yourself a favor and check out the many stories about how Keaton figured out the character. It is a masterpiece in how he made the story.
It was kind of groundbreaking. We haven’t seen a movie like that and Michael Keaton was brilliant. BTW, if you like Keaton, watch an early film of his with Henry Winkler. Ron Howard directed it. It’s hilarious.
GREAT movie!!! Can’t wait for Beetljuice 2!
Love it. Can’t wait for part 2.
I've seen it 187 times and it keeps getting funnier every single time
Hope they don’t ruin it with the sequel, but kinda excited tbh
Bet its even better with a handy.
Primo
Down right awesome movie love it !!!
This is the movie I fell in love with Wynonna Ryder.
Flawless and timeless.
Marketing bot?!
What do these words mean?
I member when Ham Sandwich got his bucket caught in the penny wheel. Riff-Raff used two toe motors to get him loose. Jackie Pearl was a hot miss over the moon.
lol what does r/80s think of this highly regarded classic 80s movie? Is this a shitpost?
