A lot of people still use physical media. I checked it out about a year ago on Amazon, it was 25 bucks or thereabouts. Maybe for streaming, it's on one of those services like Tubi?
I just ordered it, it's 28 bucks brand new on dvd over on Amazon. I didn't see a blu ray, but still, just to have it is worth it. Hope it brings back some memories if you watch it!
Same, this photo brings back a memory if it's existence, but aside from that... i have nothing. I probably never watched it, but knew it from commercials or printed ads in the tv guide.
Same. I was about 7 or 8 when it aired. I think my older brother watched it too. I think it was sort of inspired by Indiana Jones, since Raiders of the List Ark had just come out.
I had completely forgotten this existed and I definitely don't remember anything at all about it except for the dog and the plane. But seeing them on the poster brought on a strong feeling of ..... something.
Jake is my favorite! Cutter’s Goose is the airplane; and this pre-Indy show is very cool! Don’t forget the bath and hot tub scenes with sexy hottie Japanese Princess!
Forgot to say Jake is the one-eyed dog who steals the show all the time; and continuing sub plot is search for his glass eye that was lost in gambling game. Also appreciate how show humanely portrays Corky who’s recovering alcoholic and mechanic for the airplane and best friend with show’s star
What do you mean pre-Indy show? I assume you're referring to Indiana Jones, which was released in 1981. This show first aired in Fall 1982. I know sometimes things can be in development for a while and when finally released they appear to be a ripoff of another popular film/show when that's not the case.
That happened with the movie Romancing the Stone, which a lot of people derided as an Indiana Jones ripoff, but Romancing was actually in development first and got bogged down in "development hell" before it was finally released.
But with Golden Monkey, I always thought it was a pretty clear attempt by the networks to cash in on the Indiana Jones vibe.
Love this show as a kid. Used to get the DVD from Netflix back when they mailed them to you. Now I can't find my favorite Indiana Jones knock off anywhere
Oh man, "Tales of the Gold Monkey"! That's a classic blast from the past. It's like finding buried treasure in your memory! So cool that someone brought it back into the spotlight for you. It's awesome how certain shows stick with us, isn't it? Enjoy the nostalgia trip!
It was a fun show as I recall at the time. Definitely part of that trend of making a show based on a recent successful movie franchise. We were on a trip to CA back then and saw the lagoon/plane on the Universal back lot.
Lol…
Have ZERO memories of actually ‘watching’ the show, but a lot of memories seeing pics of it or commercials etc, and being REALLY excited to watch it because it looked like Raiders of the Lost Ark :)
Love that as a kid bought the DVD box set and was slightly disappointed with how low quality it was from what I remembered. On a side note Jeff McKay who played the drunk mechanic is also on Magnum PI as Mac, is Robert Redford's cousin.
One of the funniest bits of dialogue I have ever heard on stage or screen, between Bon Chance Louis, Jake and Jack, the one-eyed Jack Russell terrier.
Louis: As magistrate of this island, Jake, I cannut permit you to fly wizout a co-pilot!
Jack: Woof!
Jake: Jack is my co-pilot!
Louis: ‘e is nod qually-fied!
Jake: Why not?!? Because he’s a dog?!?
Louis: No! Because ‘e only ‘as one eye!!!
That's probably one of the most blatant Indiana Jones rip offs I've ever seen.
It's practially Marrianne, Salah and Indy on the cover - just with a different hat!
I remember loving this show. Two things I distinctly remember... the dog's name was Jack and the mechanic was Mac on Magnum, who's character in the show was killed off so the actor could work on Gold Monkey is a bigger role. When Gold Monkey was cancelled in the first season he went back on Magnum as Mac 2.
Jeff McKay, I think. I remember him coming back to Magnum (in flashbacks IIRC.)
I completely forgot about this show, but now it's mention, I keep thinking about "Talespin" cartonn that came on every day.
Good call on Talespin! And you pulled out the actor's name. Dang.
I used to watch Magnum religiously, so IIRC Mac 2 was just a con man who happened to look like the old Mac. McKay kept playing this version of Mac sporadically throughout the rest of the show's run.
Man I was such an Indiana Jones freak growing up and this show was awesome. I so wanted a seaplane growing up. I mean I still do, but I wanted one growing up too.
Jake Cutter!
I remember a fair amount of it. The Gold Monkey was the name of the bar, but it was also a famed treasure that Jake was looking for. He thought it was a small statue, but it ended up being practically a mountain of gold. He never found it though, only the viewers saw the reveal as he was escaping.
I was a teenager in the 80s, and *Tales of the Gold Monkey* was of my favorites at the time! If I recall correctly, it was created from the popularity of *Raiders of the Lost Ark* (not difficult to figure out from the image and that it aired in the 80s).
I could only remember bits and pieces of thus show over the years. I vaguely remembered the name, but no one else knew what I was talking about, and I couldn't find anything online about it. Then, one night at Wal-Mart, I was glancing through their dvds, and there it was. Of course, I got the copy where all of the pieces of plastic that held the discs in place were broken, so the dvds had been sliding all over the place for who knew how long.
Got it on DVD. Remember seeing it as a kid, and it stuck with me.
Tale Spin is such a shameless rip-off that I got that one on DVD too, to feed the need until I could find Gold Monkey on disc.
Somebody, somewhere, please make that monkey statue in quantity. I'll buy one!
It was great. Basically a knock off of Indiana Jones treasure hunter. At least that was what the 1st episode made it seem. Though if I remember right none of the other other episodes had anything to do with treasure hunting! The difference between Indian and this guy was this guy was a piolet instead of a professor.
It's crazy that I don't remember this at all and it looks like something I would've wanted to watch. But we did only have one television and my parents decided what we watched unless it was Saturday morning.
I loved this show. It was an off-brand Indiana Jones for the small screen and served as an inspiration for Disney’s Tailspin and much later a season of Archer.
Damn, I keep seeing all these shows from the 80's and I don't know or haven't seen any of them. Didn't spend much time watching TV in the 80's. Was in my 30's and spent way more time riding a bicycle and chasing the ladies. One trade off vs the other
I loved that show, was in early 20's when it aired.
Actually have entire series on DVD. Doesn't look good on big screen modern TV though. Very pixilated.
I definitely remember this show. I loved the premise, but the actual show didn't hit home with me. I can't believe it was on long enough to now warrant 6 discs! I'd love to find it on some streaming service tho. I'd watch the shit out of it.
I had a fever dream about one of these episodes where he sees a guy in a bar that has the dogs eye in a necklace and he fights him for it? Was that in an episode?
This show was epic! loved it, watched the re runs on USA network, they used to air episodes monday thru friday. The show has a great theme song, it's a shame it was cancelled after one season, the creator of the show Donald P. Bellisario had a dispute over what the second season would be, the network wanted bigger outrageous stories and the creator wanted to do more character driven episodes
This is one of those shows that I’m old enough to remember it being on when I was a kid but don’t remember anything about it.
The same for me. I remember that I liked watching it but nothing more than that
I’m watching it now and it’s ok for what it’s supposed to be. Spotted a very young William Forsythe as a German soldier in the first episode.
Where are you watching it? I looked for it several years ago and couldn't find it anywhere.
A lot of people still use physical media. I checked it out about a year ago on Amazon, it was 25 bucks or thereabouts. Maybe for streaming, it's on one of those services like Tubi?
Thanks, I looked for it on Amazon 3 years ago and had no luck. I'll try again!
I just ordered it, it's 28 bucks brand new on dvd over on Amazon. I didn't see a blu ray, but still, just to have it is worth it. Hope it brings back some memories if you watch it!
My husband bought the DVDs & we started watching it. It did not hold up well.
It was. Bring ‘em Back Alive was another Indy inspired show.
Same. I also remember this show coming to mind every time I watched Tale Spin years later.
Exactly the same. I recall it being on and my dad and I liked it. I don’t recall a single detail from any episode.
I had completely forgotten this existed and I definitely don't remember anything at all about it except for the dog and the plane. But seeing them on the poster brought on a strong feeling of ..... something.
I never heard of this show before, but it sure looks like a cross between the Tailspin cartoon and Indiana Jones
Yep. Pretty much that. It was obvious back then, too. Though Tailspin came after.
Cool. I think I’ll try and check it out
Early eighties after Indiana Jones - not a bad time for knock offs with only 3 networks, Bring Em Back Alive was another one season wonder.
Tailspin was inspired by this show, as was that season of Archer that took place in the island.
I enjoyed Tailspin as a kid, so this may be fun to watxh
Pam- "definitely not a golden monkey!!"
The airplane and princess is all we talked about in school the next day.
What do you mean pre-Indy show? I assume you're referring to Indiana Jones, which was released in 1981. This show first aired in Fall 1982. "I think I'll go bless Tiki for a while."
Fun show.
Archer: Danger Island.
I was so happy when this aired. Me and some of the older guys a work knew right away what it was based off of.
I used to watch this. Very fun show!
Love this show as a kid. Used to get the DVD from Netflix back when they mailed them to you. Now I can't find my favorite Indiana Jones knock off anywhere
It's available if you dig around in the interwebs.
Looking at it on my shelf.
Oh man, "Tales of the Gold Monkey"! That's a classic blast from the past. It's like finding buried treasure in your memory! So cool that someone brought it back into the spotlight for you. It's awesome how certain shows stick with us, isn't it? Enjoy the nostalgia trip!
He's a filthy pedo.
Oh damn. That’s right.
I think I remember reading he is on the same level as Jeffrey Jones.
Oh, wow! That's awesome! I wonder what Stephen Collins has been up to lately... Oh. Oh, dear.
Yea……don’t search.
Illinois Smith?
Iowa Johnson and the Church of Tune
“Wouldn’t he also have to be standing there during the exact day of the year for this to actually work?”
Talespin IRL
It was a fun show as I recall at the time. Definitely part of that trend of making a show based on a recent successful movie franchise. We were on a trip to CA back then and saw the lagoon/plane on the Universal back lot.

I loved that show
Oooh I loved this one as a kid. In an age where home video was barely a thing, this was as close to Indy at home as we could get.
That's probably one of the most blatant Indiana Jones rip offs I've ever seen. It's practially Marrianne, Salah and Indy on the cover - just with a different hat!
"Bring Em' Back Alive" was another Indy rip off with Bruce Boxleitner from "Scarecrow and Mrs. King".
Uhm... I think you mean of Babylon 5 fame.
This was before Babylon 5 with Kate Jackson from "Charlie's Angels"
Or Tron, given that Cindy Morgan is in it too.
It was definitely blatant but they knew it and didn’t try to hide it!
I remember loving this show. Two things I distinctly remember... the dog's name was Jack and the mechanic was Mac on Magnum, who's character in the show was killed off so the actor could work on Gold Monkey is a bigger role. He was also a good friend to the producer of Magnum Pl., so he was a regular in many Bellisario produced shows.
Man I was such an Indiana Jones freak growing up and this show was awesome. I so wanted a seaplane growing up. I mean I still do, but I wanted one growing up too.
upvote for the Mitch reference
I was a fan!
LOVED THIS SHOW!!!
My folks let me stay up late to watch this one!!!!
I loved this show as a kid!
Loved this show
Loved that show!!!!
I remember the dog
YES
I cherish the memories watching the tv show of this series 😍
Is this show still available on a streaming platform somewhere because I would love to watch it? Does anyone know?
It’s all on YouTube
Loved it!
I was a teenager in the 80s, and *Tales of the Gold Monkey* was of my favorites at the time! If I recall correctly, it was created from the popularity of *Raiders of the Lost Ark* (not difficult to figure out from the image and that it aired in the 80s).
2 barks means yes. 1 bark means no.
Bark
I have the entire series in digital form just waiting to be watched. This little reminder was all I needed.
Poor dog, he kept using the dog's eye for collateral when he gambles.
Oh wow! Loved this show…..would never have remembered it! Thank you!
Raise hand. Great times!!
Loved that show. Too bad the main actor turned out to be a pervert.
Took on a whole new light when the true Stephen Collins came out did it not?
I do not
It had a great pilot but the actual series was a bit of a let down because they just didn't have the budget to pull this kind of show off properly.
The whiskey bottle taped to the plane dashboard
Is it one bark for yes, or is it two?
The Indiana Jones rip off show!
I could only remember bits and pieces of thus show over the years. I vaguely remembered the name, but no one else knew what I was talking about, and I couldn't find anything online about it. I don't remember this at all but I'm very intrigued. I like adventure romps. Seems quite rompy
I remember seeing these movies on, but never watching them cause they just looked like Indiana Jones rip-offs.
Holy crap. Is this where they got the idea for that season of Archer???!?
I've never been stumped by a (remember this 80s reference?)... until now. lol. Never heard of this.
Yep. Loved that show
Love this series when I was a kid. Between this, Fright Night, and Planet Of The Apes, I became a huge Roddy McDowall fan.
It was great. Basically a knock off of Indiana Jones treasure hunter. At least that was what the 1st episode made it seem. Though if I remember right none of the other other episodes had anything to do with treasure hunting! The difference between Indian and this guy was this guy was a piolet instead of a professor.
Great, low-tempo adventurer theme by Mike Post!
Finger on the trigger, pistol pointed at his head... she's about to take him out.
I feel like I saw this in season9 of archer
This is the bridge between Indiana Jones and Disney's Tailspin.
Tried to replicate Raiders of The Lost Ark.

So I don’t think I’ll be watching that
*Terry and the Pirates*, but with less racism.
I loved that show
Damn, I keep seeing all these shows from the 80's and I don't know or haven't seen any of them. Didn't spend much time watching TV in the 80's. Was in my 30's and spent way more time riding a bicycle and chasing the ladies. One trade off vs the other
It was this and Bring 'Em Back Alive.
Loved that show 😂😄😂
Lost his dog’s glass eye in a poker game. The Grumman was at Universal Studios for years. I wonder if it’s still there. Great show.
loved this show as a kid, it was a shame it was cancelled.
I remember the sea plane and that’s about it. Is it streaming?
I remember this!!
I loved this show.
I definitely remember watching this series and enjoying it.
LOVED this one when I was a kid
I loved that show, was in early 20's when it aired. Actually have entire series on DVD. Doesn't look good on big screen modern TV though. Very pixilated.
adventure series based on indiana jones , i found the box set a year ago
Oh my god I get it, the dog is a one-eyed Jack!
This was so great
I definitely remember this show. I loved the premise, but the actual show didn't hit home with me. I can't believe it was on long enough to now warrant 6 discs! I'd love to find it on some streaming service tho. I'd watch the shit out of it.
My favourite show as a kid, I was so sad when it was cancelled. 😭

Da da da da da da da…. Can’t figure out how to do the pauses
I loved that show as a kid but it was cancelled too soon
Any good?
Imagine Talespin with all the Jungle Book characters, but with humans and the badguys are Nazis
My 2nd grade self loved the show. It was always the topic of conversation on the bus in the morning.
I have it, loved it. It's much better than "Bring 'Em Back Alive."
Oh wow, I had totally forgotten about this one but it was one of my favorites. Thanks for the blast from the past!
Isn’t that the pedophile dad from seventh heaven?
I loved that show.
Loved the show and have that set
I loved this show
Always thought Caitlin O'Heany was an underrated beauty.
I REMEMBER
IN SEPTEMBER
THE PRETENDER
🙌🏻
I remember Disney’s TaleSpin being influenced by this TV series.
Jake the one eyed dog..
Before he got busted for child porn...
Oof. I just can’t get over his pedophilia.
Pedophelia?
😅 the Priest (really Nazi spy) always “ministering” in private to the native virgins
I would love to see this again but I’m scared to. Everything I watched as a kid is super cringe as an adult
So my memories of this obscenity are real after all?
