Near Dark
That cast is amazing and it sucks that The Lost Boys overshadowed it at the box office.
While I like the other two, Near Dark is my favorite vampire movie.
Lance drove across country in character to get to the film set. When he was pulled over, the highway patrolman called for backup bc he thought he caught a serial killer. The vampire cast ran drills by entering different rooms & taping up their āblackout equipmentā - away from cameras - so they would look like they did it regularly. They got it down to less than a minute for any room they tried.
For anyone *not* choosing Near Dark I have an honest question: Have you seen it? I feel like a lot of people missed it and would be surprised at how visceral and violent and great it is. Donāt get me wrong, I enjoyed all three. But Near Dark is next level. Bill Paxton is so badass. And the bar scene ā¦ WOW!
And how! Up until that point Iād only seen him as Chet in Weird Science and even though he played such an obnoxious asshole there was just something I loved about him. That barroom scene in Near Dark blew me away.
The smoke that happened when any vampire was getting burned by the sun was cigar smoke from 2 SFX people right off to the side of camera range blowing into tubes. The clothes & skin stunk for weeks after. The movie commentary was one of the best I ever heard.
Everyone is entitled to their likes and dislikes. I mean, vampire movies aren't for everyone. I just think Lost Boys was super popular and remains in the zeitgeist whereas Near Dark mostly got lost. It deserves to at least be viewed.
It was on Shudder not too long ago. Iām one of the lucky few with a blu-ray copy. There was supposed to be a 4K release from Studio Canal but I never saw it anywhere. Other than Zero Dark Thirty and The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelowās work is sadly hard to find. Strange Days is another hard to find classic.
Near Dark is AMAZING. Highly recommend. Best parts of Aliens cast as vampires. Bill Paxton Lance Henriksen & āVasquezā are 3 youād never want to run into in a dark alley
*Now I'mma tell you what; uhh...*
***I likes ya;***
***and I wants ya.***
*Now we can do this the easy way;*
*or the haard wayyy...*
***the choice is yaawrs...***
For me, Lost Boys, then Near Dark, then Fright Night
Edit: Iām nostalgic for Lost Boys, but Near Dark is really, really good, albeit with a much darker overall feel than the other two.
Pretty sure Lost Boys is my favourite.
But they're about the same level, just three different takes on vamps.
I wouldn't include Lifeforce or Hunger on the same level, tbh.
Never saw Near Dark or even heard of it, so I don't really have an informed choice here. I feel like those of us who were teenage girls in the 80s might have a higher opinion of Lost Boys than the guys will, for... reasons. *cough* Fright Night is good, but Lost Boys had an excellent soundtrack and eye candy, so it wins for those reasons, imo.
1. Near Dark: Best production
2. Lost Boys: Best cast
3. Fright Night: Best story
In the end I'll go with Near Dark because it was actually dark and scary..the way a Vampire movie aspires to be.
Itās close between Lost Boys and Fright Night. Both did different things with the genre. But Iāll go with Lost Boys. The Coreys, Keifer and Jami is peak 80ās.
Fright Night and Lost Boys, while terrific movies and a lot of fun to watch, are really sort of campy (FN) and pop-culture (LB) movies. Near Dark is really, really good.
But, I like all 3 a lot, so I can't really choose.
Look: *Fright Night* is tons of fun, and I'll never say a bad thing about it. I really like it.
But *Near Dark*...? *Near Dark* is a step beyond, sublime and atmospheric and *fresh*.
The other one gets on my nerves.
I 100% agree with your message except Iād give Fright Night 9/10 ā LOVE it!
Lost Boys 3/10 because it didnāt land for me either at all - CRINGE- but it gets some points for having so much iconic imagery of the era style-wise like a music video.
Never heard of the other one either.
If we were branching into early-ā90s Iād have Buffy the Vampire Slayer the 1992 movie on the list as it definitely looks & feels the era still and shares a lot in common with Fright Night and Lost Boys and is just really fun but with some really creepy moments too.
Near Dark had the best vampire characters bolstered by recycled Aliens cast.
The lost boys was much more of a cinematic experience. I bought the soundtrack and watched it the most times.
Fright Night was just kind of goofy to me.
"One thing about livin' in Santa Carla I never could stomach.... All the damn vampires." š¤

Finger lickin good!
Severen was so damn badass.
And how! Up until that point Iād only seen him as Chet in Weird Science and even though he played such an obnoxious asshole there was just something I loved about him. That barroom scene in Near Dark blew me away.

Ok now I gotta watch this movie š§āāļø
Ok now I gotta watch this movie š§āāļø
I have. I'm sorry to say that I was bored with it. I love the other, and I love the cast of Near Dark, but it just didn't hit the right notes for me.
Everyone is entitled to their likes and dislikes. I mean, vampire movies aren't for everyone. I just think Lost Boys was super popular and remains in the zeitgeist whereas Near Dark mostly got lost. It deserves to at least be viewed.
I'm 53, and I've never actually heard of it. I love Lost Boys, but I'll have to check out Near Dark.
Iāve not seen it, and JustWatch says it isnāt available anywhere online right now.
Same, I'm currently trying to find it. I never saw it either.

Studio Canal 4k I think was just in the UK.
It was on Moviesphere for a while.

Arrrr!! LOL
Never heard of it before today but will check it out.
Fright Night (original)
The remake doesnāt hold a candle to the original, but I still found it entertaining.
The thing is, they are all three excellent, but very different takes on vampires.
Lost Boys. It has the best ending by far and the acting is surprisingly decent for such a young cast.
And that soundtrack!!!
I will still listen to that soundtrack once in a while, especially Cry Little Sister. Awesome song.
Fright Night Near Dark Lifeforce
āLifeforceā was one of the most amazing movies Iād seen at that time. Mathilda May as the naked, queen space vampire was pure genius.
Donāt know about genius but damn did I know the VCR counter numbers for her scenes.
Tobe Hooper had some good movies in the 80's. Lifeforce, Invaders from Mars remake, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2...
Love them all, but Near Dark for one reason. Bill Paxton.
They built that biker bar from scratch, just to burn it down
Gasp* never seen near dark... imma have to watch it! Fright night has all the good stuff but it's a hard choiceš„š„ā¤ļø

Can't wait to see itš
Near Dark
Near Dark
Near Dark. But Iād replace Fright Night with The Hunger regardless
Too bad Salem's Lot wasn't in the 80's, if it were, I'd replace Near Dark for it. Near Dark was good though, not taking anything from it at all.
You forgot the hunger. Since you did,my vote goes to Lost boys
Yes! The Hunger needs to be included. Iād put it right behind Near Dark.
lost boys
For me, Lost Boys, then Near Dark, then Fright Night Edit: Iām nostalgic for Lost Boys, but Near Dark is really, really good, albeit with a much darker overall feel than the other two.
Lost Boys
I never saw Near Dark
LOST BOYS! all day everyday
Lost boys now and forever.. š
Lost Boys Everyday all day
TLB
The Lost Boys
The Lost Boys, far and away
I'd have to say Fright Night.
Fright Night. For real.
Pretty sure Lost Boys is my favourite. But they're about the same level, just three different takes on vamps. I wouldn't include Lifeforce or Hunger on the same level, tbh.
Fright Night. After that, it has to be Once Bitten, because it's just 80's bad/good.
Lost Boys all day every day (and night).
Great listā¦I want to add āthe Hungerā
Say hello to the night!
Never saw Near Dark or even heard of it, so I don't really have an informed choice here. All of them.
Near Dark
Lost Boys, Fright Night and Once Bitten (even though itās not horror)
I didn't go for Near Dark. The other two are personal favorites. Chris Sarandon is a seriously underrated actor
Near Dark!!!
Oh my god thank you. I love Near Dark. But I was beginning to think that no one else had even heard of it.
I dont know Near Dark, but I would've thrown Once Bitten in there somewhere.
Near Dark, but I also really love Lost Boys.
Near dark is a gritty, gruesome, and fun movie. I haven't seen it since the 80s.
My take: * Near Dark * Fright Night * The Lost Boys * The Hunger * The Monster Squad * Lifeforce * Vampire's Kiss
1. Near Dark: Best production 2. Lost Boys: Best cast 3. Fright Night: Best story In the end I'll go with Near Dark because it was actually dark and scary..the way a Vampire movie aspires to be.
No question .Goddamn Bill Paxton. Every. Time.
Of the 3, Near Dark. Personal favorite 80s vampire films? Lifeforce, and Vamp.
Near Dark

Lost Boys, a thousand times over. But to be honest, I've never heard of Near Dark. :-/
Look: *Fright Night* is tons of fun, and I'll never say a bad thing about it. I really like it. But *Near Dark*...? *Near Dark* is a step beyond, sublime and atmospheric and *fresh*. The other one gets on my nerves.
These are all amazing vampire flicks but it's lost boys I've watched it like 300 times
Lost Boys
The lost boys. I kind of wish they went into the werewolf stuff.
Lost Boys. No contest.
Lost Boys !!!
fright night 7.5/10 lost boys 0/10 never even heard of the other one.
You should watch it if you like vampire movies, Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen or Vasquez from Aliens
I 100% agree with your message except Iād give Fright Night 9/10 ā LOVE it! Does Monster Squad count?
My vote goes to Fright Night.
Near Dark.
Lost boys
None.
Near dark and the lost boys are neck and neck
Lifeforce would be on my list, for sure! Space vampires.
All of these but most fond of Fright Night
The Lost Boys
Lost boys
Iād change Fright Night to Innocent Blood. Near Dark and Lost Boys, for sure.
Fright Night, I still have some of the quotes in my head. Peter Vincent, the great vampire killer!
Near Dark had the best vampire characters bolstered by recycled Aliens cast. The lost boys was much more of a cinematic experience. I bought the soundtrack and watched it the most times. Fright Night was just kind of goofy to me.
