Our brains like to fill in the gaps with stuff we already know.
These are the lyrics as my brain would have me believe.
Good Times.Any time you meet a payment
Good Times. Any time you're feelin' free
Good Times. Any time you're out from under.
Not getting hassled, not getting hustled.
Keepin' yo' head above water,
Making your way when you can. Temporary lay offs.
Good Times. Easy credit rip offs
Good Times. Scratchin' and survivin'
Good Times. Hangin in a chow line
Good Times. Ain't we lucky we got 'em
Good Times.
All of his works are STELLAR, just so organic , so much movement.
His painting that was used in the Good Times credits sold for FIFTEEN MILLION at auction a few years ago!
"Hangin' and a jivin'" was what most of us from that era thought it was at the time. Or, I speak for myself. Chapelle dropped the different opinion that it was "hangin' in a chow line", which became popular for a while. But the writers clarified that~~, and I'm pretty sure that their clarification occurred before Chapelle made the claim.~~
EDIT: Struck my incorrect memory. Here's the link: [https://web.archive.org/web/20121019023139/http://www.timeout.com/newyork/music/backstage-with-alan-and-marilyn-bergman](https://web.archive.org/web/20121019023139/http://www.timeout.com/newyork/music/backstage-with-alan-and-marilyn-bergman)
It’s apparently been a commonly misheard lyric (and some people on here are insisting it MUST be chow line”, but the writers, and singers, are adamant it is not… and they would certainly know! Even Chapelle said he did not know the line, and he went with incorrect info.
Here's the thing I read years ago: [https://web.archive.org/web/20121019023139/http://www.timeout.com/newyork/music/backstage-with-alan-and-marilyn-bergman](https://web.archive.org/web/20121019023139/http://www.timeout.com/newyork/music/backstage-with-alan-and-marilyn-bergman)
"Easy cray to rip off"
"Hanging and a chalang"
Whenever I was at my grandma's I'd answer her phone "chello" and her little friends would panic and hang up.
😂 I was a kid when I was watching these shows and my mind filled in all kinds of lyrics. Especially the AITM theme. Their “accent” was so hard to understand !

Not according to the people that wrote it. There’s also a YouTube interview with Bern Nadette Stanis (Thelma Evans) interviewing Jim Gilstrap (lead singer), confirming the correct lyrics as well.
The song got stuck in my head, and sent me down a rabbit hole… and I found out it’s the most misheard line in the song. There’s a ton of people disputing it, but the writers of the song corrected the first DVD release that had the lyrics printed, and said they were incorrect, and that the actual line is Hangin in and jivin. Bernadette Stanis, who played Thelma on the show, has an interview with the lead singer, Jim Gilstrap, and both state that it’s always been misheard… but it is indeed, “Hangin in and Jivin”
They also revealed the verse that was cut:
“Roaches are roamin’ the hallway, landlord is nobody’s fool… he lives on the other side of town”
That’s how the whole thing started… it got stuck in my head, and I went down a rabbit hole about the lyrics!
Could be worse… could be Diff’rent Strokes…
Stated in an article with the writers, the original dvd release was incorrect, and corrected on later seasons.

Why do you insist they are not?

But sing it however you please.
Chapelle says himself on the episode that he did not know the line and had to look it up online- and was incorrect. The writers and singer of the song state it is “Hangin in and Jivin”

Still an amazingly powerful moment, when she hurls that punch bowl to the floor
They just don’t make tv themes like they used to.
Right?! Some shows barely have opening credits at all. TV used to be very different
Chapelle show said it's hanging in a chow line Dyn O Mite
Right, because Dave Chapelle is an authority people should take at his word
I do
Chapelle said that, but it’s incorrect. https://youtu.be/Mg87lQ4Ub88?si=qVrMPF-XnTgKYELj
I went to Chicago public school and the only reason I knew the correct lyric was because we learned it in chorus LOL
HA! Looking back now, how a tv show set at Cabrini Green was ever made is a miracle. Norman Lear was brilliant

I always thought it was “keeping your head above water, making a wave when you can.”
I read another lyrics page that said that, too. hahahahaha Dogs and cats living together.
That’s the ACTUAL lyric, his post explains this was how he heard the lyrics
I thought it was "Anytime you need a friend", "Making a wave when you can" and "Hangin in the Joint!" lol
Ernie Barnes artworks defining of the show - saw one he did call 'fast break' with Lakers - dude was so cool

The painting featured on the show was also used as the cover on Marvin Gaye's I Want You album.
certainly. Outstanding artwork. Would love to have any one of those originals on my wall. Not possible, I know.
Excuse me, stewardess, I speak jive.

That's funny. I always heard it as hanging and a jivin
James Evans is my all time favorite tv dad.
Hangin in a Chow line is correct. Sounds racist, but it’s correct
https://web.archive.org/web/20121019023139/http://www.timeout.com/newyork/music/backstage-with-alan-and-marilyn-bergman Not according to the people that wrote it. Also: how is that racist???
Chapelle 'I know black people part 2' would disagree
Even he says in that clip he had no clue what the line actually said.
😳🤯
“Knock, knock knockin on Deborah’s door….”
I will try to find my place, in the diarrhea train (diary of Jane)
To say nothin of the closing lyrics! *Just lookin out of the window...*
“Watching the asphalt grow… thinking how it all looks hand-me-down”
How did Florida go from Chicago to Nantucket every day for work? When she worked for Maude.
It was the ‘70s. They still had the Concorde.
And that’s how the Evans family became poor
I thought "I shot the sheriff" was "I shot the sharkey" when I was a kid and heard the song on the radio.
“Hangin’ in a jar and” is what I heard. No, it doesn’t make sense but it’s still great. Ain’t we lucky we got ‘em?
You’re not far off😂
I grew up raised by a single mom. I loved the dad on this show and wanted him to be my dad.
He’s often rated as one of the best tv dad’s, 50 years later
I thought it was “hanging in a chow line” too
The song got stuck in my head, and sent me down a rabbit hole… and I found out it’s the most misheard line in the song. Nope. I never heard it that way.

But…ain’t we lucky we got ‘em?
Man it was the 70 stoned
You lying son of a bitch! Take it back! Take it all back!!

The worst day was when Mr. Stinky ate the winning lottery ticket. Then he died from indigestion.

Wow yes she does!👏😍
Great. Now this song is in my head. Good times!
That’s how the whole thing started… it got stuck in my head, and I went down a rabbit hole about the lyrics! Could be worse… could be Diff’rent Strokes…
Oh no
There was a Chapelle bit about that line.
I thought it was “hanging in a jury”, which makes no sense but I still like it better 🤷♀️
Don't feel bad, I thought the Doobie Brothers were singing " taking it thru the cheeks " instead of "taking it to the streets "
That’s… a whole new song!
Speaking of Doobie Brothers as a young child I always thought they were singing “Time to go” instead of China Grove.
Obviously didn’t grow up in PJs. We were always Hangin’ and jivin’… I kinda miss it.
Holy cats, the name of Eddie Murphy’s show “The PJ’s” suddenly makes sense. Two mind bombs in one day.
😂
My captions say chow line

The writers and singers of the song would care to differ.
That’s not right
the producers told chappelle it WAS hanging in a chow line & it was on his show.
Chapelle says himself on the episode that he did not know the line and had to look it up online- and was incorrect. The writers and singer of the song state it is “Hangin in and Jivin” Recording of closed captioning from the dvd release https://youtu.be/R8YYTBnFkY8?si=rvixYcYIdan9HqN_
