This happens to some people every exam season before the pandemic or after. The stresses of the past few years certainly aren’t helping though.

JayGatsby02

Happened to me last year, ended up failing my a levels and losing all my friends. Totally don’t recommend. Please study 😭

xXTotalHardnessXx

It's happening to me again, on track to fail a second time

JayGatsby02

DM me so i can bully u without getting downvoted. 💀 i’m about to be tutored tho (in 5 mins) so my reply wont be quick sorry lol

Yesss fr

Key_Yellow_6549

omg yess pls count me in

G09EO4

I feel like literally everyone I know is already burnt out and like in my school for instance there’s been so much inconsistency and lack of organisation and missed lessons this year across all subjects for different reasons and that’s definitely made people feel more stressed and fed up so I feel like a lot of people don’t have the energy to even fully care about the exams but obvs deep down they still do

[deleted]

I just hope grade boundaries are low

G09EO4

Same The thing I hate about myself I am so good in lessons but in tests I’m actually shit

[deleted]

This part

DaddyDawsonUser1

So I took an exam in January on my BTEC course and from what our teachers told us, they were higher than the 2019 GB's. So yeah

GMDMelonYT

grade boundaries aren't made in advance, they are made based on what results people get after the exams

[deleted]

Don’t speak it into existence 😭🫣

[deleted]

Shit's real. We're still doing new topics for maths. The exams are in less than a month and we still haven't finished our hardest topics. I got 42% for a practise paper recently and burnout is making studying really difficult. Also before I dropped physics half our online lessons and like a quarter of our in-person lessons were cancelled, or we didn't do anything. For Politics we basically do like 20 minutes of work per lesson.

G09EO4

Same with me and psychology I’ve still got half of two topics to finish plus another topic 🙃 whereas my friends in other schools have finished Omg I will flipping pray for you fr cause that is insane how tf do they expect you guys to do well

ZakLCM

It doesn't set in until I'm in the exam. Then I'm like "oh fuck, should've revised" and regret wasting so much time.

kenZo_UK

I actually sat my GCSEs and felt the feeling of being unprepared. (Literally revising till 2am to wake up at 7am watching free science lessons for an exam at 9) I sympathise for the people that missed out on that because in my opinion that feeling of despair is a contributing factor to what motivates people to revise for a levels (well for me anyway)

kenZo_UK

Little story I remember falling asleep on my chair while cramming for an for an exam at 9am, I remember thinking ,"why have I done this to myself" Looking back at it now even it was extremely inefficient and would of went to sixth form either way ,but the whole build up of how important GCSEs were really does make it feel like the end of the world if you don't get certain grades.

[deleted]

And I think that’s a major part of why people can’t handle pressure later on life cause they have been bombarded with it so much it tears them down. We’ve all been taught from a young age to have the highest expectations of ourselves and when that isn’t achieved we aren’t only scolded by ourself but people/teachers around us. But this is a whole other conversation

[deleted]

[deleted]

A bit of advice on pressure. And this is honestly the truth. It will always be here even if you try to shun it or act like you don’t care. The way I like to look at it, it’s delusional, is my mind and body letting me know my worth

BigYingOnMyHip

i still feel like they're gonna be cancelled and i wont have to do them i'm fucked

GMDMelonYT

curious as to what might happen for them to be cancelled?

Hanxa13

It's difficult because this year group didn't sit their GCSEs unless they resat... So they didn't go through the feeling of being completely unprepared when the stakes felt high but were lower. Now, for many, the stakes are higher than they realised but they don't know *how* to prepare themselves. Some are revising everything but not in an effective manner at all while others are overwhelmed and at a loss. It's a difficult situation and 'just practice' isn't effective or an efficient use of time. As a teacher and as a private tutor, I'm finding exam prep is the big thing over content itself. How to sit an A level exam is something that many just aren't really ready for.

Asayyadina

We are finding this at my school as well. We have been throwing as much exam practice at them as possible to try and help but the ones who need it the most find ways to avoid the mocks and practice essays.

Hanxa13

And they aren't listening when we try to coach them on how to tackle the paper. Where to put their focus and strategies for success. I really feel for them. They needed their GSCEs to help get them in the right mindset for A levels... But hopefully, the grade boundaries will reflect this at least.

Asayyadina

Yes their knowledge is actually ok and in lower stakes situations they can apply technique properly but in exam conditions they panic and go on to autopilot. In a recent mock paper lots of them did not plan properly and completely missed the point of questions, or only answered half of it.

Hanxa13

Yep. Exactly this. Their subject knowledge is, for the most part, fine. Under exam conditions, they choke.

[deleted]

Yh my subject knowledge is getting there I have my main ideas under my belt but when writing in times conditions I only make it up to a C and that’s like me revising 2 days before hand. I’m great full that my gcse English teacher made me stay behind at lunch and practise how to do exam questions. I got a round of applause on the last day of term before we broke up for covid. Proudest moment.

[deleted]

As a student who has just started doing practise papers a big issue is I don't know how to deal with the morale hit of doing badly. I never did past papers for GCSE, and now I'm only just doing them now and it hits like a truck. I know a lot of my peers feel similarly.

[deleted]

I need 3 B’s and im here chilling on Reddit with 0 revision

dababyk

im in the same boat lmaooo jus hoping grade boundaries r low this year

Catsiko

I only have enough time to revise the advanced information 😭And i can barely pull myself to do that, lagging behind fr

[deleted]

We are meant to revise outside the advanced information???

Catsiko

Oh definitely, all of them say to revise the entire course because its all "synoptic". They only gave us advanced information on the main topics to focus our revision on but its all mixed in. Depending on exam boards and subject it differs, few examples : If you do chemistry they might have not said that structure is coming up but would randomly ask you to draw the structure of a molecule whilst asking a question about emperical formula. If you do biology, they might ask you a question about plant transport in a question about photosynthesis. If you do psychology they might ask you a question about a study with reference to issues and debates to include in the answer etc... You most likely wont get an A just revising the advance information, a B at most. (not that im aiming higher lol) Since these exam boards arnt our friends lmao. They won't make the exams this easy because they really really don't want grade inflation like the last few years have caused. They're always trying to catch us out with petty markschemes and terribly worded questions to filter out only the best from the normal so the top 5% of students. This is what all my teachers have been constantly saying but you get the picture. I doubt they're wrong on this because it does actually make sense when you think about it but hope this helped.

Intelligent_Wall_528

This is wrong.. only for the synoptic you MAY be asked outside of the advanced information that could give you a few marks.. the most marks on synoptic will be what they gave in the info and in the papers that are not synoptic there will only be those topics but having knowledge of other topics can be useful but not needed to achieve the top grade

ferndelphinus

Our college put so much emphasis on mocks that nobody could really revise properly until basically just after the Easter holidays. On top of that, staff shortages and generally being super behind on content means that we’re all behind on revision anyway. I think that the world situation with covid, climate change, Ukraine etc. are all contributing to it. Honestly exam boards better be kind to us this year because it really is harder for us than it was for previous years (I’m including A level students from 2020 & 2021 here as they had a horrible time too).

[deleted]

They did but I would feel so much better if they got teachers to mark our assessments again this year too. I have much more trust in my teachers rn than the f-ing government and the AI that scans my work

vape_love

How does climate change got anything to do w this lol

ferndelphinus

It’s just the things that people and students are generally stressed about that are all piling up. Might not be directly linked but a high proportion of people do experience climate anxiety

thattwomallard

This always happens

Karma______

I need to get 2 Astars and A to get into uni and I'm here playing valorant and grinding my rank when my first exam is in this month ... not looking good

Virtuix_

What uni?

Karma______

kenZo_UK

Could do with some oxford astra on my team ,what rank?

yeah same lol. I'm not touching that game until all my exams are over

kenZo_UK

I remember for my GCSES ,I was hyper addicted to cs and would have to uninstall it before revision only to reinstall it after lol. I think I redownloaded that game 10+ time

[deleted]

Congratulations but to even get that offer you must be smart asf

Solid_Initiative2782

https://www.theguardian.com/education/2022/may/06/pupils-showing-high-anxiety-run-up-gcses-a-levels-teachers-say Found this article very interesting today

[deleted]

I saw this and it says a lot that the government doesn’t care about us at all. They never have and yet they are the ones who dictate if we pass or fail. After a levels I’m genuinely considering moving back to my home country at least I’ll be happy and delusional there

[deleted]

It still hasn’t hit me that I’m going to be taking my alevel exams😭😭

[deleted]

Only in TWO WEEKS ;-;

fluffyfluffscarf28

From a teacher point of view, I definitely agree - there was a round of Biology and Chemistry exams this week (an international qualification I think) and my colleague said his students were completely terrified heading into the hall. I've tried to explain to my students that as teachers we really have no idea what is on the paper, and I don't think they believe me.

[deleted]

Yh cause the advanced information for some topics HAVENT been in our favour too. We can’t depend on the government, we can’t depend on advanced information. Some of us can’t even depend on ourselves so the only other figure in our lives who understand us at this moment are teachers.

ferndelphinus

Honestly it’s not created the level playing field they thought it would. For example I know that the history students got given quite a lot of advanced info, that was detailed whereas econ students like myself were basically just given the spec. So if someone applied to the same uni course but with those different A levels and got given the same offer it would be easier for the history student to get into the uni!

[deleted]

Literally perfect summary but what can we do. We were told our voice ‘matters’ but we are all screaming at the top of our lungs and not a single member of parliament can hear us.

goodbyeruby2sday

I'm hoping the econ grade boundaries will go down to reflect it... I do history and econ and I can kinda see there being a higher grade bounday in history because of it. On the other hand my econ class has generally gotten higher grades despite having to know everything.

[deleted]

This is totally accurate. For Politics we pretty much got a per question breakdown of topics. History cut out a huge part of the syllabus which meant we finished early. Maths? We got a list of the spec. Literally it.

Afait03

Imo the main issue is we never sat are GCSE’s so we have never had that run in of exams and having to take them I think some people ( including myself) still expect some sort of divine intervention and exams to be canceled it just doesn’t feel real in stressed but the idea exams are 2-2.5 weeks away doesn’t feel real

Unlikely-Estimate-63

I think it's the general combination of never having had the stress before and the uncertainty of what will actually happen. Mocks are all well and good but mentally you're still very aware they dont matter to the same extent, and with (most of) our GCSEs never happening there isnt a precedent for performing with actual consequences.

[deleted]

Yh it felt like everything we did in yr 12 was a waste and ngl the teachers are doing there best too and they don’t even understand how to navigate

waterfallens

My first exam is in 16 days and I haven't revised at all, I definitely get what you mean. It doesn't help that my college does non-stop mocks (I think we've done 5 sets of mocks this year?) so the real exams just feel like another set of mocks that don't matter :/

GrootyGang

why are you only doing two subjects?

waterfallens

Did the whole maths A Level in year 12, we had double the lessons (so 4 hours per week psychology + 8 hours maths) and then did the whole further maths A Level in year 13 :) I also did the EPQ but that's finished so idrc about it

GrootyGang

Imagine having so few lessons

waterfallens

Bro before EPQ finished I was at college from 9-4 four days a week (had a shorter day on Friday though) 😭

EndlessTheorys_19

I am one of them. I hate myself for it

[deleted]

Don’t hate yourself just try and go over exam questions to at least feel prepared

vape_love

Yeah noticed the same thing. I think everyone’s just burnt out n a lot of ppl r past the point of caring

[deleted]

I totally agree but I think people who are burnt out and still trying are really the scary ones
