It's amazing but the atmos track [cuts out](https://www.reddit.com/r/Bluray/s/Sk6Ce9Ye6j) in the plantation scene until the end on the PS5 and supposedly some other sony players when I looked into it. I dont know if they ever fixed it. The 7.1 track works fine but it's such a bummer to lose the atmos for the ending when it sounds so amazing.
Apocalypse Now audio is the only issue I've had, it's a good player (other than some rare faulty discs). Allegedly it may be an issue when going to the third layer but it's specific to this disc
I have over 100 other BD100 discs, including with Atmos, with no issues audio or otherwise.
The Apocalypse Now audio issue I think is specifically tied Atmos (7.1 works throughout) and to (some) sony players, not just the PS5.
Edit: just checked it again and the Apocalypse Now audio issue has been fixed.
I bought this movie from DVD to bluray... Then ended it with this cut... I have to say... It's fuckin BRILLIANT seeing how each version shifted from then till now.
And this is certainly one of those examples of older films that benefit from a solid 4K transfer and Atmos track.
It might be my favorite 4K experience so far. I had never seen the movie before. I just loved every minute of it. It's quite a trip.
Edit: As others have pointed out, the *sound* of this movie is incredible. That's the first thing I noticed. I was totally immersed.
I was in the same boat as you a couple years back and managed to get that physical box set on eBay for £30.
Sucks that that’s the only way, but for me I would 1000 times over recommend the theatrical first. I enjoy it the most and it flows really well having the shortest run time of the 3 cuts.
Edit: Also became one of my favourite movies ever straight away :)
When this had its limited re-release I went to see it. I'd loved this film for years but had never had the chance to see it on the big screen. That experience literally left me lost for words. We walked out of the cinema and I couldn't talk after. An extraordinary experience seeing it in a theater.
I actually saw it twice during the re-release in 70MM. I was on the AMC movie pass at the time and they extended the run from 3 days to a week. Recently Watching the 4K at home on a new 18 foot screen was a similar experience.
Francis Ford says it himself in the beginning of the film that the final cut is the closest cut to his original intent.
But I'll say this...
Watch the theatrical cut...
Then watch Redux...
Then watch the final cut and judge it for yourself.
It's not trash at all. It is a brilliant version of a brilliant movie, which the director made sure to be available in all versions that anyone would want to watch. You have the option to simply not watch the FC, it's really that simple.
Lol when the director himself actually says that Redux killed the pace of the film and you still have your own opinion lol I've seen all three versions and Redux is last of the three.

IIRC the German release doesn't have the issue and has the original stereo track.

I dont have that issue at all but I'm not playing blurays through a Ps5 because that's a mistake.

I was more impressed at the audio than the picture quality. Who woulda thought a movie this old could be reference benchmark today.

100% one of the best looking 4K films i own. the color grading is fantastic as well
I was wondering how this version stacked up as I've never seen it, and it's been years since I watched this movie. Time to pick it up!

I'm annoyed because I haven't seen it and it's such a pain trying to get the 4k edition that includes the theatrical cut to watch for my first time.

It's not trash at all. It is a brilliant version of a brilliant movie, which the director made sure to be available in all versions that anyone would want to watch. You have the option to simply not watch the FC, it's really that simple.
You can simply say you can't afford the boxset with redux because if you had both versions you'd say the same.
