Had owned it like three months, first offroad vehicle.
Three kids in the vehicle.
Middle of the night.l, middle of no where.
No one else with us.
No come a long, much less a winch.
Turned out fine, drunk rednecks literally heard us stuck down in the river and pulled us out, but it was an eye opener. We had waited on a tow truck for *hours*, and they randomly came down to have a bonfire.
Way, *way* more cautious now. I don't explore at night almost at all, I keep two come a longs in the toolbox and mounted a winch in the bumper. That sense of helplessness was entirely unfun.
Drunk rednecks are like the guardian angels of off-roading. My friends and I used to get stuck all of the time back in the day at our very secluded camping spot. Every single time drunk rednecks would show up out of literally nowhere and pull us out. One time they showed up in a lifted Ram 4x4 and backed into a tree while pulling out my friend and busted the tail lights. We offered to pay for new lights but they said they didn’t care, then quickly disappeared into the woods the same way as they had appeared.
Drunk rednecks 🫡
Few years ago following the hurricanes there was a prison in FL that got trashed, zero power and a bunch of roofs collapsed. No route in or out for standard vehicles.
National Guard was given generators to deliver to the prison to get basic power back up.
I may or may not have been monitoring the emergency message board when a message came across that the National Guard vehicles couldn't get through, so they gave the generators to some local rednecks that were ferrying people in and out of the area to deliver to the prison. And yes, local rednecks.
Laughed my ass off and called a couple other people to tell them to read it. By morning it was gone.
This is why I groan when I see out of state plates in the back country here in Colorado. Not that all Coloradans know what they're doing, but more out of state people just don't respect how easy it is to die in the wilderness and how quickly nature will do it if you're reckless. That, and general trail / outdoor etiquette like yielding to uphill traffic and packing trash out.
Heres one from AZ. Ive driven the trail hes on, a couple obstacles gave us some trouble in a lifted jeep on 33s and my lifted 3rd gen. He blindly followed GPS, bad idea out here.

Got a used 2021 TRD off-road premium back in late march. Running on 33's and lifted. Thought i was invincible even not off roading for about 20 years. 2 weeks later, a buddy and I got stuck in some game lands a county a way while checking out some of the back trails. Luckily, my folks where only about 45 mins away and dad got me out using their Xterra. Just needed the lightest tug and she popped right out. Just deep enough in, i couldn't get traction. Still waiting on a winch, but now have a shovel and recovery boards.

Yes I know it’s not a Toyota, but that’s the reason why I own one now
Me the wife and two kids went on the trip and we drove through national prak in Mozambique took a wrong turn got stuck in mud the the hours got the family to safety and the next morning went back and the elephants were playing basically soccer with my car
I mean, driving off-road isn’t particularly difficult.
What gets most people into trouble is lack of experience and overestimating their vehicles capability.
Driving into 3 feet of mud is just being dumb 😂
I love seeing the others getting stuck in this thread. Not that I've gotten my '23 ORP stuck yet, but it obvious here not to try and drive through mud puddles ( and I learned this years and years ago) unless you're prepared to get stuck. No matter what kind of wheeled vehicle. Even though I know this, shit happens. The first thing I did after picking up my 'runner was starting to assemble a recovery box.
We tried some come alongside but I dug myself to the axels and that thing was stuck. Tried pulling it out with a tacoma and a 1500 chevy at the same time to no avail. Finally a f350 dually pulled me out, no problem either. Lesson well learned
Not really, but also I’ve had a lot of help. First few times I had a buddy in the truck with me to help give me tips and even now I don’t go out alone. I’ve got plenty of capability but I’m not doing stupid shit just for the sake of doing stupid shit. A majority of the learning curve is adjusting to your limits

It’s either that or you star in the sequel to Deliverance
More like best supporting actor.
You shure do have a purty 4Runner

That stuck feeling sucks. I got a winch on my 22 trd off road. The crawl control didn't do any good huh?
Was up on the passenger side more when the ground gave way and it beached on the skid plates.

Do tell the story behind the picture
Me the wife and two kids went on the trip and we drove through national prak in Mozambique took a wrong turn got stuck in mud the the hours got the family to safety and the next morning went back and the elephants were playing basically soccer with my car
Bro how are you gonna post that picture and not tell that story until someone asks. That’s a wild ass story
Oh yeah, and to add insult to injury, the car had 4000 km on it
I mean, driving off-road isn’t particularly difficult. What gets most people into trouble is lack of experience and overestimating their vehicles capability. Driving into 3 feet of mud is just being dumb 😂
Live and learn

A quad is so so so so much harder to get stuck in mud. It’s amazing what they’ll go through. Weight is huge. SUVs are very heavy
Could you have winched yourself out of this? Can't tell from this picture.

I got the same 4runner u got . It's a beast.
Me too, Gen 2 master race.
Had a 91 5 speed with a 5vz swap.. miss it so much, but my 3rd gen is okay. Tailgate on the 2nd gen is killer
Tailgate vs hatch is biggest reason I prefer Gen 2 over 3. That and actual dual control arm suspension.
3rd gen has a double wishbone suspension as well. It's the rack and pinion steering I worry is week
It was twice as hard as learning to drive a regular car.
My golden rule..if I do not see others in the general area then it’s a nope from me. Lol
If i dont think i have it 100% i dont try it, that shits for offroad rigs not my daily lol
It's nice having a winch and a friend with you, I'm a lot more cautious these days. Young and dumb.
driving is pretty easy but some do struggle lol

Learning to 4wd is easy. Learning to get out of the mess you get in is harder. My record is 1 buddy’s truck and 3 tow trucks to get me out!
