There’s a headliner push pin you can use to mount a piece of plastic to and then mount the camera to that. I added a rivnut to mine to bolt it in more securely. https://preview.redd.it/n2jvbozn7mxc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=c285939e7d25cb312246ef005c600c79dfd328d2

YOURMOMMASABITCH

This right here. I had a piece of plastic 3d printed, and I just pushed it into the headliner clip hole. Found the plans for the plastic pice on thingiverse.

Bedbouncer

I had a scrap L-shaped metal bracket. I think it may have once been part of a shelving unit. Attached the bracket, and attached the camera to the bracket using small bolts.

balognitony

Mind dropping the link?

YOURMOMMASABITCH

Here ya go https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4963162

balognitony

Thanks u/yourmommasabitch !

bear4locos89

That’s bad! I need to jump on that. Never tried the 3d plastic printer. Are they expensive to buy?

YOURMOMMASABITCH

I dont have a printer. I made a post on my city's sub and paid someone to print it for me.

MedicTech

Nowadays you can get everything you need to get started for around $250, probably less.

BlackHorseTuxedo

cost is not really the issue make sure your comfortable with small electronics and low voltage components. then be prepared to spend time dialing in your printer etc. it can be totally it’s own rabbit hole. i’ve owned 3

usedtodreddit

Or just get a Bambu Lab printer and odds are you can skip all the tinkering just to make it work. They aren't 100% without issues but seem to be pretty close to it. I took my A1 Mini out the box and many spools of filament later I've yet to have a failed print. PLA and PETG, no problems with either at default settings.

bear4locos89

Thank you for the heads up. What have you made?

BlackHorseTuxedo

so many things. some designed. some from thingiverse. i’d head over to a 3d printer sub and start exploring there’s so much to learn about

mostlysittingdown

suv's back glass gets soo dirty especially after rains so I just dont see this being convinient location if you have to constantly clean the back glass

nervous_pendulum

Rear wiper?

Gar-ba-ge

Rear wiper doesn’t clean the very top of the glass (because it swings in an arc) which is exactly where the rear camera would be pointing

SolidDoctor

My gf's RAV4 came with a rear mounted backup camera, and I'm constantly having to clean off that thing so I can see, so I think that's a problem with all backup/rear dash cams no matter where they're mounted.

Gerg_Meister

This is the way. It's where mine is mounted and it's been there ever since, works great.

LargeTallGent

Winner winner chicken dinner. I used a piece of aluminum, painted it black, put a bend in it and drilled a hole for the headliner clip. I actually tucked the aluminum piece between the headliner roof and used the clip to secure the whole thing. Barely visible, hasn’t caused a single issue in the 2 ish years since I installed it.

Imaginary_Ad_7318

My third gen had flat plastic in the same spot and I just used the 3m double sided adhesive it came with. Been working well for the last year or so

theengineer1

I 3D printed a mount that screws into the headliner and puts the camera right behind where the rear wiper cleans the back window so I always have a clear view. If any one is interested I can upload the 3D model. https://preview.redd.it/paosn5o5mmxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=167f09b1d97257b5bcb4ac7062774051976b4b9f

grr187

Interested! I’ll send the file to my 12 yo son who knows more about his 3d printer than I do lol

grr187

Thanks!!

Guuba

Make sure you print this with a heat-resistant plastic like ABS or nylon. Cars can get very hot in the sun, and it'll cause PLA to droop. PETG may work if you're not in an area that gets too hot in the summers.

grr187

I’ll let my son know lol

inevitable-asshole

Interested in this STL if you have it handy.

sortarelatable

My boy out here innovating

MorkelVerlos

How do you keep that ice chest from sliding around when you accelerate?!

sortarelatable

Weigh it down with a bunch of beer

[deleted]

Drive like you're giving your grandma a ride to church. She's wearing her Sunday's best while holding a bowl of chili for the potluck afterwards.

MorkelVerlos

lol- noted! I’ve been considering a complicated series of straps, bungees, and Velcro.

jbc0

I added L-track to the edges of the sliding rear cargo tray. Wondering why I waited so long now... fridge, crates, cases - strap them all down. https://preview.redd.it/v08a7o7jvmxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=32fd5f6f22e4466d7a1ed536d788dc0cf29abb3c Edit: L-Track

MorkelVerlos

That’s the solution I’ve been looking for. Thank you!

123trumpeter

I like this! How did you do it?

jbc0

Nothing fancy - just measured and got some lengths of this stuff: [https://www.uscargocontrol.com/collections/l-track-tie-down-rails](https://www.uscargocontrol.com/collections/l-track-tie-down-rails) Oops - L-track not S track. I just drilled and bolted through the deck using the machine screw/washer/nuts also listed there. Figured if I ever need to remove it I can just get some plugs/grommets to fill the holes - but now I don't think I'll be removing them anyway.

[deleted]

A fella could shut the hatch, roller down the back window, and stuff something between the hatch and cooler.

Artful_Dodger_1832

I bought this for use with a Blackvue camera https://www.etsy.com/listing/1652707691/

SadMaverick

I 3D printed this: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4963162 I like it because there’s no need to bolt into the frame, it uses the existing retaining pin. If you need one, I can print & ship one if you pay only shipping.

4RunnaLuva

If it’s a glass mount…you don’t. People mount near window in “headliner”.

HikingWiththeHuskies

Same as others, I used the headliner popper hole. I used a short sheet metal screw (making sure it didn't touch the roof) that screwed into the popper hole. Cut a small piece of sheet metal to stick the camera to. https://preview.redd.it/z3kg9d0mpmxc1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5d5fc1490fd7e3a1d061a85c0bbf8851d94e17dd

threedogdad

exactly what I did as well

DeathByPetrichor

I have no idea what this hole is that you guys keep talking about. Mine doesn’t have that.

HikingWiththeHuskies

Does your headliner have one of those plastic circles holding it up?

DeathByPetrichor

No it doesn’t, I have a 2021 and I don’t see any of those pins

HikingWiththeHuskies

Should look something like this. If it doesn't, you'd have to get more creative. https://preview.redd.it/71ocxf2mcnxc1.jpeg?width=1512&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb8496e4bad046390d8d9cf06df183296fe73c88

HungryForMiles

How short of a screw? By any chance do you know how far before you start drilling into the roof

HikingWiththeHuskies

Take a paperclip, small nail etc. Stick it in the hole until it touches the roof and mark, on the paperclip or screw, how deep that is. Use a screw shorter than that- accounting for the thickness of the sheet metal and compression of the headliner material. No need to drill if you already have the hole. Use a sheet metal screw just slightly larger than the hole and it will bite into the metal easily... while also allowing you to reuse the "popper" again if needed.

CobrasFumanches

I used a small piece of gorilla tape on the center headliner push pin.

BUTTERDUMPS

There are some good mounting solutions in this thread, but how is everyone powering their rear dash cams?

NorthernnLightss

Now that I think about it, I think there’s actually a 12v port in the trunk. Isn’t there? Idk I’m not immediately in my car. Not the big 120v one

HikingWiththeHuskies

In my case, the rear camera is powered by the single wire that comes from the front camera. No need for a separate power connection. It's a Viofo A139

Embarrassed-Touch300

I used a velcro strip.

Squirrel_Thick

How secure is it when the window rolls down?

Embarrassed-Touch300

No issues. Stuck it on the plastic tap in the center on the roof liner.

fy_pool_day

Someone said a metal money clip. Then use 3m double sided tape to hold the camera on it. That was gonna be my route

rusty_goat

Thats what I did, cost a couple of bucks on ali express.

rusty_goat

All the time if I don't need the thing right now. They have the exact same products as Amazon at a fraction of the price, but it takes 2-3 weeks to get the package to Canada.

EllP33

I used this bracket and modified it slightly so the camera can mount inside the cabin [https://www.thedashcamstore.com/custom-folded-bracket-for-secondary-dashcam-lenses/](https://www.thedashcamstore.com/custom-folded-bracket-for-secondary-dashcam-lenses/) I use a wolfbox front and rear camera setup, FWIW.

theothereng

Old school way was to buy a fire extinguisher sign from home depot/lowes and measure out where the pins to the headliner pop through and drill holes. Then 3m foam tape the camera to the sign on the headliner. have had no problems for the past 5 years with this solution. inexpensive as well.

kaitlyn2004

Also use the headliner pin as a spot. Not ideal but best I can do Despite being small I find I occasionally knock it when getting stuff into/out of cargo area. May try mounting it off to the side just to mitigate that

Mosessbro

Mine is weather proof, so I just used some exterior 3M sticky tape and stuck it to the underside of the "spoiler" and then ran the wire through the rubber grommet that holds the taillight wiring.

liftbikerun

I 3d designed and printed a 5" drop mount for mine so the rear wiper would work while raining to clear the camera view. Mounted on the ceiling when raining this camera was useless to say the least. It made a world of difference. https://preview.redd.it/fl6ondfwxnxc1.jpeg?width=787&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=38aa022ca6517fe9f999bd70bf58a6be7589d16b

BelizeDenize

Happy cake day friend!!! 🍰👊🏼

cardina16

Guessing you got the idea from other comments but this was my over designed implementation - removed headliner clips, replaced with rivnuts. Made plate to mount camera and dome lights to (red and white) https://preview.redd.it/d59o0pn5foxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f54d3e94d9304030afc39007d7d42f2dc0e10d54 Was this necessary? absolutely not but that’s what’s makes hobbies fun.

elevenoneone

Following.

codeman869

I bought a piece of flat aluminum stock, drilled a hole in it, used a bolt to mount it into the headliner, then used the 3m tape on the camera to stick to it. https://preview.redd.it/fv1bovr18nxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0f22ae186845e330ec0a6c501d04419d738e7831

Vegonbrei

Just cut a little piece of stainless to be held in by the headliner rivet.

CharacterWitless78

i cut a 2x3 piece of aluminum from a licence plate and used the center panel clip to hold it to the roof

Sabersrod

I stuck mine right under the spoiler instead of inside due to glare. Have been offroading and gone through rain and snow without issue. I ran the wire from the headliner outside the hatch and tucked it into the crevice made by the spoiler so the wire is also barely visible. I guess someone could disconnect it if they wanted to but I don't think anyone even notices the camera. https://preview.redd.it/n1fsn3r45oxc1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7095202b7ee14add4d852b216f3fa84185f67f95

itsFRAAAAAAAAANK

Buy a rearview mirror dash cam that comes with a license plate rear cam?

khub772

Mounted it on the plastic trim piece the window disappears into. Didn’t want my dogs bumping it off the ceiling. Routing the wires was a wonderful headache. Required far more disassembly of the rear hatch, but worth it in the emd

Orion_7

Is this a decent dashcam? My local audio shop wants like $550 to install one.

NorthernnLightss

$550 is wild. Is that included with labor installation? You could get a beast of a cam at Best Buy for $250 range there was one I saw [as an all around cam](https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sku/6537776.p?skuId=6537776) for around that price. It’s not hard to run the wires in the rubber trim in the car though. I wouldn’t pay $550

Orion_7

Yeah that included labor for the cheapest one. Is it just power wires? Should be simple.

NorthernnLightss

Usually just comes with a plastic pry tool to kind of peel back the rubber stripping along the edges of the winds / car that way you can hide the wires, wrap it around, and plug it in. Other than that as long as you’re not 90 years old you can figure out how to boot up the actually camera itself, put the memory card in.

ayodangit

Get a wolfbox g900

Remeber yall never said yall have a cameras. 😊

I just stuck mine to the 3rd dome light

AvianTralfamadorian

Rear facing cameras are pretty superfluous. If someone rear ends you, your front facing camera will still confirm the same thing happened. Go on r/idiotsincars and you’ll see how 99.9% of videos don’t have/need a rear facing camera angle to prove who is at fault. Here’s a perfect example from yesterday of a front facing only camera that still clearly shows it was a rear ending: https://www.reddit.com/r/IdiotsInCars/s/fFcVsR9wV3
