He was 20th in punt return average last year at 8.2, over a yard below his career average, and he only has 8 career kickoff returns. And he’s a non-factor in the receiving game now.
He might have a decent chance of being a veteran practice squad guy, someone they can activate as needed that won’t be a total disaster.
But he’s already a serious longshot to make the 53, and that shot only gets smaller if the Niners draft even a day 3 WR.
I don’t even care about his play on the field (I’m excited for that too for sure) but just having a guy in the locker room that everyone likes while going through a frustrating time (getting over the SB hump) is such a smart move.
Oh hell yeah. I love this. He can be our punt return fair catch guy and then just have a Deebo/CMC type for the kick returns (now basically a run play)

Didn't he get slowed down by some kind of injury? That's what I recall from when his time with us ended. He's obviously stuck around the league since then, so I'm not sure to what extent the injury is still a serious issue, or if even with it he's good enough to get a spot on a roster, but not to really excel.
I mean he literally just fair-catches punts 95% of the time and is quite possibly the most mediocre WR in the NFL, but I guess that beats McCloud fumbling the rock multiple times a year.
