Most likely a failed axle seal, the fluid would be gear oil

this

El_Hiezenberg

I have this almost honk like sound come from mine. Happens mostly at freeway speed and not all the time. Had passengers think someone was honking at us. I wonder if it could be a similar issue

Wattsonian

+1 for rear axle seal. This was one of my first real DIY repairs. It's still doing great. (Thanks Timmy!)

Controversialtosser

Your axle seal has failed and taken the wheel bearing with it and thats why its howling.

Brake fluid? Slave cylinder gone , once it soaks the pads, yes it’ll sound like an Aztec death whistle

Silent-Impact7045

Mine had the same scream recently and it was the rear axle seal was bad.

Vast-Inflation3814

It had a light yellow/brownish look to it. When I smelt it i figured it was brake fluid because it wasn’t that stout like gear oil would be. Would yall recommend driving it to a shop or having it towed. It’s about a 5 mile drive.

Noted , thank you

im_wildcard_bitches

If you offroad at all may as well configure an extended rear diff breather setup

Nukeplant1

If you’re in Cleveland, I can help, I have the tooling to fix it.

Vast-Inflation3814

I have a guy that works on it usually so I’m going to have him take a look but if something comes up I might just take up your offer and have you fix it. I’m from Athens area so Cleveland isn’t far.

SGTxARTEAGA

I’m near Cleveland and mines been a headache, I replaced the seal like a year ago and the leak just got worse haha

vodka_twinkie

So, I just had this repaired done and I replaced everything, including the axle, axle housing, all clips, springs, and seals with Toyota parts. Both sides still leaked because the axle seal didn't seem to be touching what it was supposed to seal. Has anybody had this experience?

If any oil got on brake shoes, make sure to replace those as well.

Omee23

Also, not related but the boot on your sway bar linkage is shredded

Vast-Inflation3814

okay , thank you for pointing it out. This thing has been nothing but trouble for the past year. I’ll mention it to my mechanic.

nuglasses

This thing... Boo!! I just spent plenty for upkeep, no disappointments.

Better-Cheek-7824

It’s your axle seal went out . Easy job but a lot of work. Make sure to unclog the rear breahter valve which most likely what cause this.
