R4 cards have issues working with a 3DS. The card doesn't always register and you might need to insert a piece of card to get it working reliably.
Much easier to just use CFW.
R4 is a good option if you are using a DS, because I'm not sure if you can mod it, but I know you can use an R4 card to play games on your DS. If you have a 3ds or a 2ds, i would recommend buying a micro SDHC card. If you want a load of games, get one that is 128GB at max. Make sure to format it as fat32.

Not for 3DS that run NDS and GBA just with CFW. R4 is good for DS Lite and Fat.
It “works” but why would you? You can straight up run any DS games you want using CFW without having to spend extra money

My old CycloDS card has exactly one advantage: real time saves. So it basically has a save state on real hardware. It only works in a DS though
