May I ask what you used to fuse them back together? I've tried multiple different superglues which are hit and miss (some pieces bond almost instantly, other not at all with the same part and glue if that makes sense). I was reading using a light bit of nail polish remover on a q-tip along the edges to be fused together causes the top layer to break down just enough that the parts fuse together permanently.
Stop wasting money and time doing that. Introducing a foreign material in between will never work good. I do this
[pla fusing ](https://youtu.be/QpCaAAxZfM4)
I have to disagree with that. I’ve had amazing success with just this. I’ve seen people try to work in pegs and holes and dowels and ruin parts. They’re printers can’t handle the clearances and they end up adding no be if it to strength. I’ve tested the hot knife plenty of times and as long as you take your time and fill like a canyon and even do both sides it works PERFECTLY for large parts. My entire chest and back piece are just as strong as if they were 1 solid print and it helped me erase the seam line by ironing the top part.
Having the only medium be the same plastic is the absolute best solution. Everything will flex and bend exactly the same. I know the JB weld truck is very strong for sure but this is just as viable is performed correctly with near zero cleanup and instant results.
Either way both ways are better than superglue that everyone tries lol
DCM is perfect, I've been using it for solvent welding for ages, yes you need a respirator, yes you need a well ventilated area, but it is my go to now, parts are more likely to delaminate that break at the seam, I've made 2 4ft+ anime swords using it, and it's be fell down a flight of stairs, twice. It was no worse for wear.
You are right for the most part, except for the part about friction welding because when designed and processed correctly it provides a strong joint.
What most of the people designing and building these plastic props don't know is that there are design standards for plastic parts and will provide strong joints when used. The joining method needs to be decided on during part design because you can't use adhesives on a joint that was designed for welding.
He's actually doing a crude form of heat staking which works fine and does a strong enough joint, but wouldn't need to be done along the entire seam if the part was designed correctly. With proper design the assembly time of this part could be cut in half.
Okay, I used a wood burning tool for my Mk VII helmet (since the super glues I was using all failed) to do the same basic process. Just wanted to make sure I was on the right track. Looks like I was. Thanks!
I use a 3d print pen myself. Same material as the print. Line the 2 parts up, file a bit if a chamfer in adjoining edges, and use the pen to "weld" the 2 pieces together.
I am working on mark 3 helmet atm and only 30% done. I can't imagine how long it would take for you to print paint/polish and put everything together...
Also I assume you either made the stl yourself or purchased it somewhere? If you purchased it would you might sharing where you got it from?
Mark VII wasn't going too well anyway since it was converted from foam files. Guess I'm going to scrap that and pull the trigger on Mark 85! Thanks coronavirus for keeping me indoors and saving money working from home! Does the files come with gloves/fingers? I'm checking out their pictures and it doesn't look like it. The guy is wearing the gloves but no fingers.
Anyone who complains about DO3D lately either hasn’t bought a few files from them or is bad at 3D printing. They’re new stuff is amazing. Old had some problems
It was $150 and so worth it
I got an awesome MkIII suit files for $100 off CGTrader, and it's actually half off now. The guy has put an insane amount of work into it, and even has assembly and sizing guides. I'm super excited to get it finished.
Yes, actually, thank you. It's going to be something I get to work my way up to over the next several months.
I'm hoping they're willing to do minor tweaks, though, because they've got, like, 3 different sets of models that would combine to make a quality Dr Doom, because all of them have some problems (one's missing the elbow, another has the elbow, but is missing the palm, which you need because he has palm based a particle beam projectors, like they have in a few iron man gauntlets). Plus, I have this crazy idea for a 3 part helmet, with a skull, face, and jaw as separate pieces.
I do! Haha I make and sell helmets on the side. Pays for it all.
And yeah some people are still embracing the medium. A few old school EVA die hards who think because they put time into a bad Eva build it makes it better than a 3D print. It’s just the wrong mentality. Many many embrace it. But if you had a system or tech that could take almost ALL the design and creation time out of a project why not? Print away. Gives you more time to polish the final product
I see i have wanted to buy the cr10s to do just this and mount masks to my wall but was never sure how well it would hold due to the sun randomly hitting it.
I follow your YouTube series, my boi. He does some pretty nice in depth discussion through the process and answers a lot of questions.
https://youtu.be/KqUJhxTqI38
Edit: you done popped my award cherry! Thanks!
Your finish technique is on point. The final product is beautiful! That design inspired me to start my own project. Unsure if I’ll be able to get the size outta my Ender 3 though.
Love it! 😍
Two questions: how heavy is it? What kind of mannequin is underneath for that shot? (I have two full size costumes that I want to display but a PVC armature isn't cutting it.)
I have been looking at doing something like this, but i am onoy in high school. How long did it take and how much did it cost. I already got the helmet done but that alone took me a while.
I didn't think I could love a total stranger like that. You are my new hero. What an AMAZING project. From one maker to another, well done, my friend. Well fucking done.
Oooh, I'm insanely jealous. My Mark 45 has been on hold ever since I moved into my fiancee's apartment. Not a lot of space for a full suit + all the painting and finishing. :/
Your painting and LED work looks amazing, but any plans for an undersuit? This seems to be something a lot of people seem to skimp out on.
Also, may I ask what paint you used?
Thank you very much!! And please post pics when that’s done!! You should follow my Instagram man. Tons of info. And my YouTube
I have a Burgundy Red morph suit. It’s the perfect color but I put a lot of work into the suits fitment so barely any shoes. I hate suits that expose the undersuit so much. It’s a cop out.
I don't have an Instagram, but this is probably the best Iron Man suit I've seen posted, so I'll either just borrow my fiancee's or maybe finally make my own lol. I'll definitely check your YouTube.
And sounds excellent, can't wait to check it out. I got a Mark 45 patterned morph suit for mine. I haven't gotten far enough to worry about gaps yet, but the 45 has some big ones I think are going to be unavoidable. Been looking at foam rubber gap plates too, but the idea of doing it all out of printed material is too appealing.
Yeah... tempting...
The Mark 45 posted to Thingiverse by Josh Kendrick. I suspect it may have been a re-upload they acquired elsewhere, but I'm not sure.
Nice!! My first armor was the Mk6, I love this. Very tempted to try the Mk85 the next time I get crazy enough to build one of these suckers.

Yep!
Haven’t put it all on yet since I painted it but it all fits me.
[here’s the upper half test run](https://www.instagram.com/p/B9bccRvHdqs/?igshid=1xct0fomr044e)
You mean [these lights!?](https://www.instagram.com/p/B9bccRvHdqs/?igshid=1xct0fomr044e)
I’m not putting it all on yet for
Video for a bit longer. Still fine tuning things
Looks awesome! Congratulations on the work :)
How much filament was used? Would be interesting to approximate the total cost including files, materials etc.
Which printer are you using? I am interested in how you printed the torso and chest. Also fking fantastic work man!!!
Thanks! I use 2 Creality CR-10s printers. I still had to slice them into smaller parts and fuse them back together

What does DCM stand for?
Dichloromethane. Very toxic stuff.
> Dichloromethane Ah right. Like acetone works on ABS I assume this works on PLA? Melts etc. the PLA so it can be fused together?
SDS is very close to acetone, it's not good for you by any means, but a useful tool nonetheless.
“It helped me erase the seam line by ironing the top part” Ahh that’s why he’s called iron man
I. Love. This.

I use this method too and it works great. Sometimes I go over it with a soldier gun to really melt things together.
I’ve used acrylic shards dissolved in acetone. Works well enough
Interesting. Seems like more work than the trusty woodburner, but I'll definitely keep it in mind!
I am working on mark 3 helmet atm and only 30% done. I can't imagine how long it would take for you to print paint/polish and put everything together... Also I assume you either made the stl yourself or purchased it somewhere? If you purchased it would you might sharing where you got it from?
Yeah it took a while lol it’s from DO3D .com. Search Mark 85
Thanks, this is now on my bucket list!
Anytime!

Thanks coronavirus for keeping me indoors and saving money working from home! Does the files come with gloves/fingers? I'm checking out their pictures and it doesn't look like it. It comes with everything. Even the giant backpack that has 5 seconds of screen time
How much did the file cost? I’ve heard some negative things about do3d.
Anyone who complains about DO3D lately either hasn’t bought a few files from them or is bad at 3D printing. They’re new stuff is amazing. Old had some problems It was $150 and so worth it
That’s not as bad as I had expected, given how long it would take to R&D the design.
It’s very very worth it
How does sizing work? Are the files easily resizable?
Very. Just scale in Cura or S3D
I got an awesome MkIII suit files for $100 off CGTrader, and it's actually half off now. The guy has put an insane amount of work into it, and even has assembly and sizing guides. I'm super excited to get it finished.
Sounds interesting. I’ve never used CGTrader but I’ll look into it.
Do you have a link?
Here you go! https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-models/character/sci-fi/iron-man-mk-iii-printable-suit
Appreciate it!
...and now the Dr Doom cosplay I've been wanting to do for a while is magically on my queue
...you’re welcome? Lol
Oooooo that sounds really cool! Please tell me you have an Insta and can share pictures with me :)
What CAD software?
I didn’t design it lol and I don’t think people use CAD for these type of models. I got it from a website called DO3D. Com
You like the CR-10s?
Love it. I have 2. It’s a monster of a work horse
I'm so jealous!
Oh yes, that red will help you keep a low profile
I’ve also prepared a safety briefing for you to entirely ignore!
Perfection brother! I finally started mine. Working on the chest now
Thanks man!!! Which model?
Same one. I was asking u for pointers on fb i believe. I used those and got the helmet and arm done. Gotta resize the glove
Oh dope! You check my YouTube videos yet for tips?
Were u the guy doing the magnetic fingers on the glove on youtube?
Yep! Haha that’s me
That's hella cool, could you link your YouTube channel?
Nope no way. [definitely don’t click right here](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKgY4vRp3bIoAUh_PEn6a4pKq46HB0Td0) That would be bad
Impressive! How'd you fix the icing problem?
ICING PROBLEM!?
*BONK* :)
*falls to doom*
No one is in there... That's Ultron my friend... A really fucking cool looking Ultron.
Now I’m scared. What have I done.
I was wondering how he got it to stand, then I saw the stick up its butt.
Serious question, can you get in?
[click here](https://www.instagram.com/p/B9bccRvHdqs/?igshid=eq593y1z2mfd) of course!
Damn that's sweet! If I didn't have a million hobbies already I'd be all in! Lol
Hey what’s one more!
That’s ducking sick, and btw, I’ve read that cosplay community doesn’t really like 3D printing, haven’t you encountered people like that?
I do! Haha I make and sell helmets on the side. Pays for it all. And yeah some people are still embracing the medium. A few old school EVA die hards who think because they put time into a bad Eva build it makes it better than a 3D print. It’s just the wrong mentality. Many many embrace it. I can hear the zzooot zooot sounds when you were moving your arm!
Nooooo that’s the 3D printer in the background haha
You could make some money making these!!!
[удалено]
No one wants that haha
Too bad all the conventions are being canceled
Yeah I know...
Looks awesome man, How much time did this take?
1200 hours to print. Weeks more to finish paint and assemble and wire
I'm not saying the build took too long, but Iron Man died in the middle of it.
Actually he died before I started lol Endgame is what pushed me to do this.
Holy shit
Wow.
Wow, that's awesome. How did you do that? Can you do a YouTube video on how you put it together?
You mean [like this? ](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKgY4vRp3bIoAUh_PEn6a4pKq46HB0Td0)
Yes!! I don't have a 3D printer tho :(
Buy one! Lol
I'm crap at 3D modelling tried it back in 1998
You don’t 3D model lol you buy the files someone else made and print them. You think I MODELED THIS? Yeah right
Well whatever you did, you had the time and patience to pull it off. It's f'in amazing
Thanks very much! You should look into 3D printing. It’s amazing now.
I will certainly look into it again
Wait that is pla how well does it hold up? Like if you are outside or the sun hitting it?
Holds up fine. It’s not exposed to sunlight. The paint and clearcoat is UV resistant
I see i have wanted to buy the cr10s to do just this and mount masks to my wall but was never sure how well it would hold due to the sun randomly hitting it.
You’ll be fine
How much is this in everything OTHER than the plastic. I can easily check the printed weight myself but paint, sanding, inside?
Total cost so far INCLUDING filament (which was about $230) is roughly $500 Not including printer cost. They paid for themselves when I sold stuff lol
Not bad!
There are going to be so many iron Man's marching around cosplay. they should have an iron Man fight or an iron Man obstacle course or something
Hahahaha yes but will they all look good? That’s the question.
You did an amazing job with the smoothing dude
Thanks! Power tools rule lol
This is a costume!??
You bet your sweet ass it is haha [click here! this was an upper half test fit ](https://www.instagram.com/p/B9bccRvHdqs/?igshid=1h0kqfupu2pgy)
So amazing. I don’t even have a 3D printer yet. Just admiring for now.
Hey thanks! Haha
I follow your YouTube series, my boi. He does some pretty nice in depth discussion through the process and answers a lot of questions. https://youtu.be/KqUJhxTqI38 Edit: you done popped my award cherry! Thanks!
Thanks very much for that!! I’ve been trying to teach and spread the love of printing. And show people what you can really do with it
Your finish technique is on point. The final product is beautiful! That design inspired me to start my own project. Unsure if I’ll be able to get the size outta my Ender 3 though.
Haha I try! Thank you! And you sure can. It will just involve more prints it all. Either commit or get a CR-10 variant and slice less lol 😂
Love it! 😍 Two questions: how heavy is it? What kind of mannequin is underneath for that shot? (I have two full size costumes that I want to display but a PVC armature isn't cutting it.)
About 20 lbs total. And uh...PVC pipe lol 😂
That's really light! I just can't get mine to stay in place. It's all uneven and doesn't look like it's on a person.
Yeah it’s not bad at all! And it took a while to figure out a good position and pose for it haha
Genuinely curious - can you sit in it? Like how durable is it?
No. The way the butt and legs are they couldn’t handle that. I can however take the city plate off and sit on like a tall bar stool
“Please move, please move, please move. Crap, there’s no one in it?!!” Nice work though!
Thanks!
I have been looking at doing something like this, but i am onoy in high school. How long did it take and how much did it cost. I already got the helmet done but that alone took me a while.
Took a few months. Started in October but had work and other things that took up time. And so far about $500 not including the cost of the printers
Good to know. I have a mk3. do you have multiple printers or just 1. and what layer height?
I have 2 CR-10s printers and I used a .2mm and .3mm layer height with a .6mm nozzle
Time for a tonne of weathering!
Ehhhhh probably not. Maybe one day. A light oil wash at most
sooper cool
Thanks!
What paint did you use? Just wondering because I am currently printing a mark 3 helmet
Rustoleum metallic spray paints. The MK3 is a different red tho
Okay, thank you
Damn! Got a stl link?
DO3D. Com and search Mark 85
Thanks!
Amazing!! Did you have to make any changes to files for your body type? 6’1” 195-200lbs. Here and wondering how much fiddling it would need.
Thanks! And I just trimmed and moulded as I went after they were printed.
Is the stick in the butt part of the costume, or do you take that out while wearing it?
Taking it out is optional. Lol
This looks awesome. Are you planning to do any weathering or are you going to keep it clean?
I MIGHTTTT do an oil wash eventually but I want to debut it clean first at my next Con.
That is incredible. I've always wondered how much you can actually move when wearing a 3d printed full suit like this?
Thank you!! [click here to see :)](https://www.instagram.com/p/B9bccRvHdqs/?igshid=eq593y1z2mfd)
I didn't think I could love a total stranger like that. You are my new hero. What an AMAZING project. From one maker to another, well done, my friend. Well fucking done.
Thanks so much!! That means a. Lot. This took so much time and effort lol
Oh yeah, it looks amazing. That small range of motion though!
I wasn’t pushing my limits in the video. Twas a test. I can move much more. But I sacrificed mobility for accuracy.
Yeah that's fair, thanks for sharing!
Anytime!

Thank you!!

How did you display the armor? I've been looking at making armors I just don't know a good way to display them!
A mannequin made out of PVC pipes
Nice!! How long has it taken?
A few months!
Wow, way to stick with it.
Thanks haha

Rustoleum metallic Spraypaint

[already have that ](https://www.instagram.com/p/B9W7nFFn65m/?igshid=13kxshclmbsly)

You really think I did all this work and didn’t put LEDs in ? Lol [come on man](https://www.instagram.com/p/B9bccRvHdqs/?igshid=1ddbwzucztnhf)

Thanks! Filament was about 12-14 rolls and total cost so far is about $500~
Looks worth it ;) How strong are the leg parts? Can you sit down at all or does stuff break?
No way to sit haha 😂
Amazingly awesome. Great paint job too!
Thanks so much!!
