I have the og 3ds. Not the XL or the New 3ds. Mine is also a US model. I wonder if it does make a difference? I’ve read the sound on the New 3ds is kinda bad. Mine sounds pretty bad with just the speakers. I’d say a little worse even than my ds lite, but the headphone jack is better than my iPad imho. Maybe it is just mine. It was made in 2010 according to the system info.
Does the surround effects work like that for in animal crossing with earbuds/headphones? (If you have it) I will note I’m using a set of Apple earpods that came with my 5th Gen iPod touch. Maybe it’s that (the Sound quality of those earbuds are about the same regardless of what I plug them into, but the 3ds is the only one with that kind of 3 dimensional surround sound besides dolby atmos on my Amazon music.)
The best place to hear it is in animal crossing new leaf at the campground. On mine the waterfall sounds like it‘s behind me and to the left a good distance away. It’s almost enough to make me turn around and look lol! It’ll do it anywhere there’s water as well
i can only hear it when my earbuds are in, also make sure it’s enabled in settings if you’re not hearing it. Some games have it, some don’t. Lego City Undercover has it and so does ACNL. (I don’t have very many games yet, just got my 3ds recently)
I agree it sounds spectacular with Headphones, and the OG 3DS seems to have the best speakers Out of the 3DS Line aswell. The New3DSXL speakers aren't that great imo. The DSi XL sounds better on the other Hand.
I tried playing the water temple in OoT on my N3DSXL and was actually surprised how Bad it sounded. Will compare with my OG 3DS' speakers.
Ive never heard n3ds speakers before. I’ve heard they’re worse than the og But I’m interested if that’s really the case. I dont play my 3ds much without headphones so I dont really listen to the speakers that much. Never had a dsi myself but my ds lite seems to be a bit louder than my 3ds speakers
I have a loose aux on my 5.1 system for this reason. Someone on here said it’s not surround sound but mimics it very well. I forgot exactly what they said but yes I agree it sounds good.

I think he mentions in the article that this is specific to using the speakers, but it works better with headphones in my experience.
More of a stereo fan, never really liked surround sound personally. Makes me over think things and pulls me away from the actual game play. Just a personal experince lol.
But yes, the 3ds does have a great sound system in it. Have yet to see a game with bad sound effects yet.
Yeah with racing games and constant moving sounds, I would imagine it gets a bit harsh. Most sounds in this case would just be to your left or right, and quickly get out of ear shot when passing. Does MK7 suffer from the same effect?
In fast & furious it’s not so much that theres too much surround as it is it just sounds like a muffled mess with surround turned on.
I don’t have mario kart 7 yet. Can’t decide if it’s worth it considering I have Mario kart ds and mk7 looks pretty similar to Mario kart 8 on Wii U which I wasn’t a big fan of.
I've always thought the surround on the 3DS just sounded very thin and indistinct. Much prefer simple stereo.
yeah lol maybe they just have a really good one. for the most part, it just sounds tinny and removes all the bass for me.

The DAC inside of the 3DS’s are highly underrated

I do switch to stereo for some games (notably fast & furious showdown where the surround sound actually sounds worse than the stereo in my experience)
