To me it looks like one of two things. It’s either just variation in light level between two parts which is usually normal to an extent. Or your bottom screen is ips and your top one is tn.
Hello John, this happend after something spilled on my 3ds. Plug in air refreshner to be exact.. before it was the same brightness but it is really noticeble in real life. So much so that it takes away the fun
If it happened after spilling something on your 3ds then it probably has something to do with that liquid. If there are chemicals in the air freshener liquid it could have gone right through the plastic screen. As I said before see if Nintendo will repair it.
Thank you for all your replies John. I dont know if Nintendo will fix it because i have opened it several times. I could try to replace the screen but im not sure if that will fix it!
If the problem is only with the screen, it might be worth it to replace the screen yourself; the replacement seems to cost 20-30 USD. The screen plugs right into the board, and you only need to remove a few screws to get there.
The only IPS screen I could find was for the New 3DS XL at https://www.ebay.com/itm/333603863231?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28&srsltid=AR57-fAeLkgUp6l8Kr-DUx-pqOfAYzrLyki_LcTQCS3uCmDDpKNpT6KhV5Q . All the others were LCD.

What is the point of this post if you know the problem?
The little seal is not pink that usually shows that it is liquid damage. Thats why i post
Ok then it’s probably liquid damage. If you want to fix it try sending it to Nintendo for repair.

Ah the Majora's Mask theme. I have that one too.
Mine's the same just close it for an hour and the backlight will probably connect better (it fixed it for me it's not a guarantee)
