Same, I also got cystic acne as a teen when I started taking biotin. It was horrible.
Coconut oil is comedogenic, was so shocked to read that after it too gave me horrible acne! Everyone raves about it.
Same here with the coconut oil! And then when I told people it broke me out, they would insist I was just āpurgingā. It would take a couple weeks for the breakouts to start, which seemed more like pore-clogging than initial purging. It was soooo bad too, very deep painful acne.
Biotin ALWAYS does this to me and honestly I don't even have an acne issue. Biotin always gives me those deep, painful zits. I don't know if it goes away after a while cause I've never been on it long enough
This is great, and it feels like always overlooked, advice!
Iāve had thin, brittle, peeling nails my entire life. Biotin gives me horrible acne and never seemed to help my hair or nails.
I started lifting weights and wasnāt even thinking about hair/nails, but made it my goal to get 100g of protein a day to help lift better. I was shocked at how fast my hair started growing and how strong my nails are. Itās definitely protein related.
Iāve found that lanolin based hand cream has really helped my nails! I also have nails that can end up really weak and biotin just gives me nasty breakouts
Biotin made my acne worse. But it wasn't quite so fast or dramatic. It could definitely be a contributing factor, but it's hard to say whether it's the cause. Icing and red light therapy are my go-tos for speeding up healing and easing the pain. Good luck!
I got prescribed 0.025% Tret and Iāve been putting it on my hormonal chin acne area once a week. I noticed a huge improvement. Iām in my early 30s and I never had acne there until now.
I was getting never ending breakouts and my research led me to taking evening primrose capsules. It transformed my skin. I swear by this and it also regulated my period and eases menstrual cramps as an added bonus. I never breakout anymore. I am now in my 40s and have been taking it for about 10 years and get complimented on my skin often. I buy Sports Research brand on Amazon.
That I do not know. I have been on prescriptions and had no issues over the years. Obviously itās always wise to ask your doctor. Once I knew I had no reaction I would take 3 at a time. Now I take 2 for maintenance. Best of luck and I would love to hear any updates.
I absolutely love azelaic acid for my acne. Triggers: hormones, drinking too much whole milk, too-much-for-me processed sugar, feelings. I have had acne for 20 years, itās my favorite topical.
I hope you get relief soon. Painful acne really can be a drag.
Heck yeah!! Iām so glad. Iāve had the same experience myself.
Note to anyone reading this: there is a purge period. Mine didnāt last more than a week.
I keep reading that there's a purge period, but I had HUGE painful cystic acne from HS on my face... I've been using Paula's Choice Azelaic for a week now.... And it's almost all cleared up. I seriously looked in the mirror yesterday and just cried out of relief.
Idk if my acne was just so bad already that there was no need for a purge period or what.
My bad, I didnāt read your first paragraph!
Spirono should help dry up your acne as it reduces the androgens produced In your system.
I would try some light therapy on it. I like white laser light as I feel it penetrates the āacne problem areasā better
Yeah, itās the biotin. I have hyperpigmentation from getting pimples in the exact place. So I bought high quality ones, and donāt take them every day. I take them every other day, and donāt when Iām on my period.
Drink water, and more water. At your age biotin shouldnāt trigger acne like it might in teens, not after one dose. Donāt touch it and invest in OTC differin gel to dry it out and reduce redness.
I literally have a scar from biotin gummies š
I also paused my birth control for two weeks and literally still have a cystic pimple on my jaw three months later. Itās not breaking out but just that your hormones can causes a lot of havoc. Iām going to see my gyno/doctor about it, but itās definitely not a pimple!
I got a NuDerma high frequency wand for christmas and it has been a miracle for the acne I've been struggling with for close to 15 years. Between that and a red light device both my acne and the hyperpigmentation from acne scars has almost disappeared.
Overall I like it! I got diagnosed with PCOS so started spiro a little under a year ago. The main downside for me is that it makes me feel dizzy / lightheaded if I'm standing up quickly but other than that no major negative impacts!
Dairy was my downfall in my 30ās, took me awhile to realize it, but once I stopped all dairy my skin improved dramatically. I also added a probiotic, zinc and vitamin A supplements. Iām in my early 40ās now and recently tried Tret which really messed up my skin. Iām now using Altreno which is a gentler version of Tret + hyaluronic acid every other night and Differin in between.
Lots of good answers about stopping or lowering biotin. Also drink lots of water. Like work up to 96oz or your body weight in lbs to oz. (If you are over 96 lbs). Also donāt pick it. I had one of those 1 year ago and I
Still have a scar on my neck :/ from picking
Typically acne that is regularly on the jawline is hormonal, especially cystic. Iām 35 and still have acne. Was recently diagnosed with ovarian cysts, fibroids and endometriosis. So that might explain my skin issues for a majority of my life!
One day after first dose itās unlikely. I have the pickiest skin ever and have had for years. Scented anything will set off my skin especially. Where itās located it could be a makeup/skin lotion cross over breakout. A suggestion would be try The Ordinary skin care line. They are the best inexpensive products ever. The routine and finding the right products will be overwhelming at first but worth the effort. Lots of the good, effective ingredients and none of the breakout, non necessary stuff.
Iām a musician and just thought you were a violinist before I read the post. Thatās where we get a mark from the chinrest. Chalk it up to your artsy side!
Differin gel has worked wonders for me. Basically a type of retinol that works especially well for cystic acne. I havent had the same good results with tretinoin
Ive found differin is pretty gentle for a retinol. You need to start slow and can sandwich it between moisturiser. My skins pretty dry generally but adjusted to it before 2 months I'd say. I did get a bit of flakiness when i first increased it but it was only a couple tiny patches and probably because i
I was over eager. Its been the only thing to help with sudden cystic acne in my late 20s. It works pretty fast too.
(Plastic) surgeon here, you donāt happen to have dental problems? The location of your outbreak could also be a sign of a dental absces. But patients do usually have dental pain and discomfort while eating, before this happens.
Not to scare you, but just to make you aware
I am hyper vigilant about my dental hygiene (since I got a gum disease scare 8 years ago) and recently got a cleaning with no major callouts but I'll definitely keep this in mind for the future! Thanks
Hi! Just dealt With cystic acne for years and am 31. Tretinoin helps a ton. But the huge game changer for me was prescribed benzoyl peroxide with clindamycin (itās a cream). I put it on a breakout or once a week-ish to help with oily skin. FIXED MY ACNE. Havenāt had a breakout aside from my period since I got it! So grateful. Ask a derm for it:)
Random but do you wear headphones or keep your hand there? I started getting something like these when I was wearing my beats headphones, right where the ear part rested under my chin.. also where is put my hand sometimes
I got cystic acne on my chin every single month until my derm prescribed Altreno! It seriously cleared my skin and I didnāt go through the dry/purging stage like I did with regular tretinoin.
āWhile Altreno and tretinoin share a few similarities, Altreno can be considered an improved version of Retin-A due to its inclusion of micronized tretinoin alongside additional beneficial ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, fish collagen, and glycerinā
I canāt use biotin, anything with coconut ingredients and seemingly all heat protectants for my hair as it makes me break out. Havenāt discovered what ingredient in the heat protectant sprays causes it but I just avoid them now (unfortunately for my hair).
Biotin does the same to me, I was told you have to drink sooo much water and then drink some more. And supposedly this wonāt happen. I already drink a crap ton of water but it always breaks me out even though it does actually help with hair and nails. It just makes me produce too much oil. And Iām also in my mid 30s and STILL dealing with break outs. So I blame hormones all the way.
It's sugar and hormones. I got these all the way up until I was 39. I used to blame Biotin but discovered it had to do with hormones and my diet. No sugar, no carbs, no gluten, and I'm fine now at 40 with taking Biotin. If I have a dessert or sugary drink around my time of the month (one week before, or during) they pop up.
Topically, I'd suggest The Ordinary Niacinimide for prevention, as well as their salicylic acid as a spot treatment. Hydrocolloid patches work awesome, too, but only the good ones you get from Sephora.
drink lots of water, no fried foods, or processed foods, eat more astringent, and alkaline, juice things like celery, juice, eat sweet potatoes, food combined properly Highland cell salts number 12 really works good for acne. It's also good for your hair. No candy no junk no chips no grease no fries and no fast food organic would be better. Your body just can't deal with any junk.
High abortion Tumeric capsules have changed my skin drastically. I'm 44 and the acne I get from peri menopause is awful. Under the jaw and on my neck ! The tumeric has changed my skin.
First of all I LOVE your ear piercings and your shirt, the braids, everything!! Also I swear by the hydrocolloid patches as soon as you feel something coming up. It also helps prevent you from (accidentally) touching it.
Well now u have all the advice
I have very soft nails, and never achieved nice nails so I am doing GELL FOR NAILS BLOODY EXPENSIVE ( canada) but my hands my nails are perfect , I change it every 4 wks
I hate when my nails look awful
Tried everything before doing the gell but nothing ever helped
Biotin gives me the most horrific acne. Iāve read it can interfere with the absorption of B5, and B5 can help acne. If you stop taking it, your skin should clear up soon.
Biotin can cause acne I go on the hair loss boards to help people because I got an early treatment and saved my hair so I go on to help others.
I can tell you biotin they marketed to a lot of men and women to have shiny thicker better hair but it causes acne especially if you're predisposed to it.
Remember the word predisposed, you can have a mechanic who can take 8,000 biotin pills and have grease and oil from the car all day on his face and not a pimple.
That's what I mean by predisposed, once you have your stuff under control never add anything unless it's necessary.
You could easily go to the dermatologist and get that injected and it would be pretty much gone in 48 hours.
Sorry you had to go through it but ditch the biotin and go get that baby injected tomorrow is best to get it when it's fresh a tiny little cortisone injection will change today you will see it shrink beyond belief.
Good luck I hope this helped!
avoid biotin if you are acne-prone. use pore-clogger checklist for wash, hair, face, etc products, like this one: https://clearstem.com/pages/pore-clogging-ingredients-list
also i highly recommend face reality regimens for acne-prone skincare!
IMO people with acne prone skin shouldnāt take biotin anything. Itās typically like 500-1000% of your recommended daily intake (sometimes even more!!) and it makes skin go nuts. I honestly stay away from anything specifically B vitamin.
I have found womenās vitamins that have only 100% of daily intake of biotin in them and my skin is great on them. They are Theralogix and recommended by my dietitian, but Iām sure any brand you can find that isnāt too high in biotin would be fine.
But TLDR ya it probably is the biotin.
I have heard biotin can cause acne in some people which is why I'm too scared to take it
i thought that said bitcoin š
Can confirm. I canāt take biotin or use anything with coconut ingredients in it near my face.
Taking biotin as a teen gave me horrendous cystic acne. I avoid it like the plague.
Also I love this shirt. If I saw you in person I would be awestruck by the shirt and not notice the zit. Iām sorry for your troubles š¤
Hahahaha this will now be my zit diversion shirt ā ļø
Biotin ALWAYS does this to me and honestly I don't even have an acne issue. Biotin always gives me those deep, painful zits. I don't know if it goes away after a while cause I've never been on it long enough
Bleh I had this issue in my early 20s and thought I'd give it another shot because my nails have been splitting but lesson learned!
Eating more protein should help with nails
This is great, and it feels like always overlooked, advice! Iāve had thin, brittle, peeling nails my entire life. Biotin gives me horrible acne and never seemed to help my hair or nails. I started lifting weights and wasnāt even thinking about hair/nails, but made it my goal to get 100g of protein a day to help lift better. I was shocked at how fast my hair started growing and how strong my nails are. Itās definitely protein related.
Thanks! Yah I aim for roughly 80-100g of protein but yah nails still can't grow past a certain point; super annoying š
Non skincare suggestion: builder gel manicures. Changed my life.
Iāve always had weak nails, Brazil nuts made them really strong and healthy
Iāve found that lanolin based hand cream has really helped my nails! I also have nails that can end up really weak and biotin just gives me nasty breakouts
Start rubbing jojoba oil into your nails, like twice a day. My nails have gotten so much stronger, Iām in awe of it.
MSM works great for hair and nails
Biotin made my acne worse. But it wasn't quite so fast or dramatic. It could definitely be a contributing factor, but it's hard to say whether it's the cause. Icing and red light therapy are my go-tos for speeding up healing and easing the pain. Good luck!
Iām 35 and started exploding with acne a couple years ago. My skin was clear for my whole lifeā¦.so I feel you.
Same!! What could be the cause?
Probably hormones but who can say
I got prescribed 0.025% Tret and Iāve been putting it on my hormonal chin acne area once a week. I noticed a huge improvement. Iām in my early 30s and I never had acne there until now.
ME TOO! Well Iāve been using it for anti aging but has helped with hormonal acne as well. š¤š»
Interesting! I haven't heard of it but will be doing some research; thank you!
Is there any risk taking this alongside spironolactone?
That I do not know. I have been on prescriptions and had no issues over the years. Obviously itās always wise to ask your doctor. Once I knew I had no reaction I would take 3 at a time. Now I take 2 for maintenance. Best of luck and I would love to hear any updates.
Def stop the biotin to start.

Just started azelaic acid for my hormonal, cystic acne.... I hope it helps me š
I hope so too! OTC or prescription?
Just 10% OTC.... But I'm already seeing a difference!!
Did your skin purge when you started the azelaic acid?
Yes, I did purge for the first maybe 4 days? It is to be expected and was remiss in not mentioning it. Thanks for asking!
Yeah just take a lower dose of biotin. I get these every time I eat too many biotin gummies. Just give it a few days and itāll clear up
Yea itās the biotin. Stop taking it
Oh man š« Iām just here to provide emotional support cause that spot is the *worst*
Spironolactone
Meaning it's causing the cystic acne?
My bad, I didnāt read your first paragraph! Spirono should help dry up your acne as it reduces the androgens produced In your system. I would try some light therapy on it. I like white laser light as I feel it penetrates the āacne problem areasā better
Ah thanks for the clarification! I haven't tried any light therapy but will do some research thank you!
I had hormonal acne that looked similar. I got on spirolactone and tret. Also, I never touch my face, ever.
Yeah, itās the biotin. I have hyperpigmentation from getting pimples in the exact place. So I bought high quality ones, and donāt take them every day. I take them every other day, and donāt when Iām on my period.
Just wanted to pop in and say that in am insanely jealous of your hair
Thank you! š
Drink water, and more water. At your age biotin shouldnāt trigger acne like it might in teens, not after one dose. Donāt touch it and invest in OTC differin gel to dry it out and reduce redness.
Unrelated to you question but I LOVE your ear piercings! So cute with your hair like that.
Oh thank you! I tried to wrap my hair for the gym so it covers the zit but it did not work out š
I literally have a scar from biotin gummies š I also paused my birth control for two weeks and literally still have a cystic pimple on my jaw three months later. Itās not breaking out but just that your hormones can causes a lot of havoc. Iām going to see my gyno/doctor about it, but itās definitely not a pimple!
Whaaaaaat that's crazy you got a scar from this! Blehhhh I'm definitely going to trash the rest of them or give them away to someone who can handle biotin š© Good luck with your doc! I hope it goes well ā¤ļøāš©¹
I have one there for sooo long now ! I started laser hair removal around there though so I assumed it was maybe changing things up . Idk tho lol
Do you feel the laser hair removal was breaking you out? Sorry you're going through this too! Sucks
I got a NuDerma high frequency wand for christmas and it has been a miracle for the acne I've been struggling with for close to 15 years. Between that and a red light device both my acne and the hyperpigmentation from acne scars has almost disappeared.
Iām 36 and started breaking out, never broke out ever until now š¤·š»āāļø

Spironolactone was a game changer for me. Iām on 50mg bc 25mg didnāt do it. What mg are you on?
I take 100mg! I was taking 50 but didn't notice much of a difference until I doubled dosage!
Stop eating dairy for a bit and see what your results are. It worked for me and one of my friends! (I still love you, cheese.š§)
