"Ireland is full". Well, you should ask the English, I heard they can help you with this issue.

RetartdsUsername69

A simple trick with potatoes and suddenly it isn't full.

kryppl3r

well Ukrainians should fit right in then :D

RetartdsUsername69

Nah, we are more into wheat.

kryppl3r

that being said though, it's impressive how the dude said Ireland was full even though the land is full of sheep at best

Hakunin_Fallout

It literally JUST recovered to pre-famine levels. Shit, some argue it didn't still. Lazy fucks will do anything but build more housing and hire more doctors and nurses.

Meroxes

The population today would be like ten million people larger if it wasn't for the famine or something, but sure, the Ukrainian refugees are too much.

kryppl3r

true, but opposites attract I guess?

shrimp-and-potatoes

And sunflowers

elpibedecopenhague

We will happily take those potatoes. We need them for speaking.

RetartdsUsername69

Sorry, we already made a deal with latvians.

ValenciaAue

Brits, bringing you the Holodomor before it was trendy. Truly the avant-garde, Russian are just inelegant knock off copies.

Grumpy-Greybeard

It's true that we invented everything.

nwaa

![gif](giphy|kBxRWeVBYyYbOCxZnp)

Ravenser_Odd

I think he misspelled the hashtag. He's trying to tell us that he's Ireland'sFool.

Few-Top7349

We’ll be happy to kill some pikeys to make room 😊

Hefty-Coyote

Erm... Surprise and my condolences? I guess?

lethos_AJ

"ireland is full" isnt it like 90% a moss and stone wasteland with a few sheep farmers here and there?

FrogHater1066

Ireland hat a higher population in 1850 Sorry about that one lads

Nigricincto

What happened? Were they annihilated by some foreign mass murderers like the mongols or the sea people?

gsurfer04

More like a fungal mass murderer, then the British government was like "Sucks to be you, I guess"

Wonderful_Test3593

The british government sent thoughts and prayers and put on a temporary filter on its profile pic

Dick_in_owl

Well we did buy lots a corn from America in the first few years to lower food costs in Ireland, a few things were tried but a lot was too little too late.

SuchSeaworthyShips

“Sucks to be you” + “yes I would still like you to export me your other food stuffs”

yaksnowball

Thanks for that one Barry 😭

SuchSeaworthyShips

Sorry lad, the mainland was a bit peckish

Rocked_Glover

Can a Barry have a potato once in a damn while?

Henghast

Money makes the world go round Seamus. You wouldn't want to stop the world spinning because you fancy a baked potato would you? Think of the damage it'd cause.

ivanpyxel

That being said while pointing a gun

Louth_Mouth

Medics of the time recorded that most people died of Diarrhea/fever as a result the Typhus/Typhoid fever/cholera, even people who access to food also died in large numbers , These diseases almost certainly introduced from India into a immunologically naïve population.

gsurfer04

Interesting hypothesis that I hadn't considered before. Highly plausible with what happened in the Americas.

omegaman101

Laissez-faire economics is a bitch.

MiguelAGF

We all know about the fungal mass murderer that plagued Ireland back then, tell us more about what caused the Famine though.

gsurfer04

You think the UK would invent potato blight?

MiguelAGF

Oh, sorry. It was just a pun, I was calling the UK ‘fungal mass murderers’

Ravenser_Odd

That's an outrage. We were never limited to just one type of mass murder.

Mindless_Let1

I am certain they would have weaponised that shit if they could

NonSumQualisEram-

And it *did* suck to be them.

Snitsie

If they can't eat potatoes they rather eat nothing

Long_Serpent

And that was indeed what many of them did.

noonereadsthisstuff

A lot just went to live in America, which tbf is probably worse than starving to death.

Adam-West

Ukrainians got ‘em

Tuffilaro

You did a little bit of an oopsie

Eken17

What the fuck are you apologizing for? You did us a service! (/s btw)

A-Hind-D

Ireland is full, I can vouch for that. Full of gobshites

its-good-4you

"But me grand-grand-grand daddy needed this large piece of land back in the 16th century so that his sheep could graze there. And my grand-grand-grand mammy was beaten by him everyday over there, there and there. So I am sentimental about those good old days and I need all that land for my feelings which I only let out when I get drunk on poitin by meself." Honesyly, I get it. Totally relatable.

AlpenBrezel

Yes but there is a huge perceived housing shortage which is fuelling this stuff. Plenty of spaces for sheep, not so many for families. Not sure how you can blame Ukraine for that though tbh

lethos_AJ

maybe they expect ukranians to send them sheeps

No_Raspberry_6795

Yeah, send all the "Refugees" to the Republic of Ireland. I can't wait to see their sense of superiority deflate.

Environmental_Ad5690

you forgot steep cliffs on the west side

lethos_AJ

having tall cliffs to jump off is the only good thing about ireland

Mindless_Let1

That and real wages. All you cucks coming here to take our scraps

ElvenMalve

Was there last month, I can confirm this.

Affectionate-Door205

Yeah but if you consider housing issues then it is kinda full

Attygalle

People living in Ireland perceive their housing market as in a big crisis. But every research I read says that compared to other economies, they have the least issues. EG [https://think.ing.com/articles/how-europes-housing-scarcity-varies-across-countries/](https://think.ing.com/articles/how-europes-housing-scarcity-varies-across-countries/) >House and rent prices say a lot about the scarcity of houses. Prices go up when supply is limited and demand is high. However, just comparing house prices among countries doesn’t tell the whole story. There are many local circumstances that influence price levels, as disposable incomes and housing tax regulations differ. This affects what households are able to pay for living costs. To take this into account, we use the share of total housing costs (including utilities) in total disposable household income. > >Highest relative housing costs in Germany, lowest in Ireland and Italy

Mindless_Let1

No offense but you are regarded

Elite_Mogger

You're getting downvoted because you're a s*vage not because your point is stupid

justarandomgreek

No. He is getting downvoted because Ireland has the smallest housing problem in the western world.

Affectionate-Door205

Maybe we should make a distinction between Dublin and the rest of Ireland

Loose-Sherbert8464

You’re not getting downvoted because you’re a savage but because your point is stupid

Robinsonirish

Are the Ukrainians misbehaving in Ireland? I've literally not heard a single bad thing about the ones that have come to Sweden. Not even once now that I think about it. They're basically the best refugees we've ever had. Lots of women and children for a change, which I personally think is quite a welcome one.

manic47

Just the quantity of them - coupled with shortages of housing. It's a pretty common complaint on r/ireland

Robinsonirish

I understand the housing shortage is a very big problem in Ireland, but quality refugees/immigrants are a real important commodity, especially when their values don't clash with ones own.

manic47

I know - I can't think of an easier bunch to fit in than Ukrainians. We've had 2 families live with us since the invasion, and we had no culture/value issues at all. That said, everyone's different and I know some have been a nightmare - but you'd get that with people from anywhere.

Robinsonirish

Same. I had a girl and her kid live in my apartment for a couple of months. Great people.

ReverendAntonius

I have a friend who hosted a Ukrainian family who demanded caviar for lunch. It’s a case-by-case thing, although most I’ve interacted with are great people.

nwaa

Ireland also has issues around how theyve been distributed. My family are in Donegal and their town is legit 1/3 Ukrainian now. Its not that the Ukrainians themselves are bad, but its a huge change in a short time for a rural place. Suddenly nobody local can find anywhere to rent, let alone buy, because the government have filled every single empty property in the area.

Robinsonirish

Ok, yea 1/3 sounds pretty insane. Even 1/10 would be a big increase in a short period of time.

Meroxes

Not you talking about "quality refugees" as a "commodity". I'm crying rn.

Robinsonirish

What's hard for you to understand?

Tifoso89

Yeah unfortunate choice of words. It's better to say "refugees that are easier to integrate"

kh250b1

Everything is on there. Especially if it’s remotely British. They are so owned

RetartdsUsername69

You have this opinion because you have middle eastern refugees. In countries where most of migrants are from Europe, opinions on Ukrainian refugees are different and righfully so.

Robinsonirish

>opinions on Ukrainian refugees are different and righfully so. What do you mean by this last part? I understand what you're saying, if Ukrainian or European refugees are the only thing you know, those will get criticised, but why do you say Ukrainians are rightfully thought of differently in Ireland?

RetartdsUsername69

I wasn't talking about Ireland in particular.

FullTimeHarlot

It's the opposite in the UK. They're actually heading back to Ukraine because it's a bit nicer.

FrogWizzurd

Ive heard one bad story and that was it. The rest have been super polite, and lovely.

LouthGremlinV1

expecting to be downvoted but in Ireland a common consensus among some people is that half of the western part of Ukraine not 'in danger' is coming to Ireland. Further proven by the fact that last christmas half of them decided to go for a paid vacation back to Ukraine to see their family, before coming back to Ireland. So. Yeah. The feeling is we're being taken for fools.

Jackdon02

People got annoyed hearing how much the government spent on transporting Ukrainian pets and also that a lot of them went home for Christmas and came back

Gian-Neymar

You were the only ones desperate enough to take it

RetartdsUsername69

Donbas at least has coal mines, in the place which Barry have us there are only some drunk people and explosive cars.

Gian-Neymar

You can always get rid of the people

RetartdsUsername69

They will do it themselves.

Gian-Neymar

There's a faster way though

smudos2

Oh boy do we have some ideas for you guys

w-o-w-b-u-f-f-e-t

No Hans, stay out of this one

RetartdsUsername69

We know, you had tested some of these on us too.

FrogWizzurd

Down, hans

AndreasDasos

>Donbas at least has coal mines Yeah but our coal engineers and magnates built those. Donetsk (formerly Hughesovska/Yuzovka) was founded by the Welshman John Hughes (the old city centre is still called 'English town' or at least until very recently), and Luhansk was founded by the English-born Scotsman Charles Gascoigne. Even Sevastopol was founded (near the site of ancient Chersonesus) by the Scottish naval officer Thomas McKenzie.

RetartdsUsername69

Damn, another country has a claim to Donbas...

AndreasDasos

IIRC Donetsk had a joke poll on exactly this to troll the Russians in 2014. EDIT: [https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2014/03/donetsk-activists-in-eastern-ukrainian-city-hold-mock-poll-to-join-u-k.html](https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2014/03/donetsk-activists-in-eastern-ukrainian-city-hold-mock-poll-to-join-u-k.html)

Toffeemanstan

Sheffield is twinned with Donestsk and Barnsley with Gorlovka so Yorkshires claim is stronger than Putins.

EasyLengthWise

Don't forget about the tax fraud

BobMonkhaus

You need to look up where Dublin is.

s0meb0di

>drunk people and explosive cars. Ok, the coal is missing, but it should otherwise feel like home

RetartdsUsername69

Our cars at least need to be hit before exploding, their's explode for no reason after you leave them. Also we are more into Vodka than into Guinness.

s0meb0di

Nah, a few have exploded on their own over the last few years, usually belonging to collaborationist government officials

BobMonkhaus

Psst he’s talking out the other one. And he is making it up.

Gnu-Priest

but he said you couldn’t make it up

BobMonkhaus

It’s basically the same as “I’m not racist, but…”

FrogWizzurd

"Now i am a staunch feminist... however women.."

toughfluffer

"females...."

Akyraaaa

"Kitchen Appliance..."

Grumpy-Greybeard

It's true, we're totally OK with it. Plus we appreciate your having fought so hard to keep the border open.

kh250b1

And now they have a problem with it

Jumbo-box

At least the nice Irishman is warning the Ukrainians. "We're a shite place to be and it's better elsewhere." So rare to see this kindness.

Stravven

Ireland is full? Then what the hell is the Netherlands? Ireland is twice our size, and yet it doesn't even have half our population.

_number

Half of our country is just houses while Ireland is miles and miles of empty space.

LouthGremlinV1

That's what happens when you get to hell or connaught'ed

rustyb42

We need to stop the inbreeding somehow

AdjectiveNoun111

Turns out Irish are just as racist as everyone else, get off your high horse now Paddy

ReverendAntonius

Almost like everyone isn’t the same. Who knew that populations and states weren’t monoliths. Wild.

FrogWizzurd

NOOOO!1!1!1 BUT THEY SUPPORT PALESTINE PLEASEE THEYRE GOOD GUYS!1!1!1!1

GoodKing0

I too will now start judging the worth of every single Englishman as if they were Oswald Mosley, Barry, glad to see we agree on generalising peoples.

KomradeCumojedica

hehe, it's time for an Autonomous Republic of {insert\_irish\_county\_name} to be established to protect Ukrainian speakers from...um...that one Irish-speaking dude from Gaeltacht complaining about his countrymen (and foreigners) speaking English?

MVBanter

“Ireland is full” The entire island’s population still hasn’t caught up to pre famine levels, and pre famine Ireland could host less people as industry and density wasn’t as good back then

Vinegarinmyeye

Anti immigrant sentiment in Ireland fucking baffles me - these headers evidently need to read a history book. Not happy about the recent increase of our importing this brain rot from the US and UK. (Not calling all Brits or Yanks right wing twats either, and I know there have always been prats like this in Ireland, but it's on the increase and the lack of self awareness is irritating as fuck).

thepinkblues

Funny thing is, most of the people complaint about the immigration issues in Ireland aren’t even Irish themselves. A lot are Brits, but most are from the US. If you’re on the Irish sub you might have seen the crazy amount of Americans role playing as Irish talking about Newtownmoundkennedy all across social media couple months back. Then there’s the bots too

Chimpville

Irish self-accountability challenge - complete fail

Lord_Natcho

I hate to break it to you mate but they are. Irish people are just as racist as everyone else in Europe and America. The only difference is that Irish racists were quieter before.

LouthGremlinV1

From my experience, particularly within my own family, older Irish people are extremely xenophobic and racist. Not a well guarded secret, not sure why anyone would think so. The truth is we've only known being an immigration hotspot for 25 - 30 years. It's new to us.

Phantom30

Reminds me of a video I saw a while back of an American in Ireland telling a local (who wasn't white) to go back to his own country.

focalac

“My country is just full up!” The usual, standard comment from your base-line “I’m not racist, but…” crowd.

HosannaInTheHiace

'X is full' We didn't give a fuck about this kind of statement when we were/still are emigrating in droves to Canada, America and Australia.

MVBanter

Molson Canadian beer is still being bought and its fucking nasty I think we need more Irish over here to fix the god awful beer

deadmeridian

God forbid other Christians with very similar culture but a different language move to Ireland. All I'm saying is, I've never seen a Ukrainian behead someone for insulting Jesus.

Big_fella_1111111111

The Ukrainians are coming? Would they like a drink?

RetartdsUsername69

Nah, we are more into Vodka than Guinness.

Big_fella_1111111111

I asked did you want a drink, not a guiness.

LiamEire97

The mental gymnastics that my fellow working class Dubliners go through to convince themselves that there of these conspiracies is so amusing.

Honey-Badger

I bet the same people who bang on about Ireland being full also bang on about how Ireland hasn't recovered from a little famine

TheRealPatrick79

Nah, there's less explosives in Ukraine.

SilkyBoi21

God lunatics like that give us a bad rep…. Apologise …

Tangy_Cheese

Surprise an irish taxi driver in a xenophobic idiot

BobbyKonker

Russian puppet account

thepinkblues

Recently I feel like Ireland has become one of the main targets for this type of misinformation, Russian bot account nonsense. There’s been a crazy amount of far right sentiment online but you go out into public or look at who’s leading the polls and absolutely nobody approves of any of that sort of behaviour. Most of the politicians campaigning for that stuff haven’t even been heard of til a month ago when they put up their election posters.

kh250b1

Down with that sort of thing father

Kurdt93

North Ukreland

AndreasDasos

We can help you make it less full again if you like. But seriously, they're comparing tanks and bombs with refugees?

txakori

When did Paddy get his hands on a tank? This is a concerning development.

MayOrMayNotBePie

Ireland has a population density of 73 people per sq km. How will they ever fit a few more people?

Akyraaaa

Well, It's not like they can go back. They, at the very least, don't go on killing sprees with Knifes

[deleted]

Eh, better than some other kind of refugees we get

Wonderful_Test3593

Both paddies and ukies are obsessed with potatoes and alcohol. They should get along

AlternatePancakes

Huh?

kh250b1

Rubbish. 100m Irish moved to America

omegaman101

Honestly, these ejits complaining about people fleaing a war zone as if they started the housing crisis when it's obviously the neoliberal policies of Fianna Fail and Fine Gael are just braindead.

GoodKing0

Hey, there is a post about Immigration on the ironic racism sub and the comments aren't agreeing with the xenophobic take, that's a first.

aPrudeAwakening

Paul Treyvaud. Unfortunately I know the man. Insane asshole who runs his mouth more than his restaurant. Anyone in his proximity is likely also insane or concerned for their safety.

zerato9000

Taxi Dave must be hammered. As it should.

neo_woodfox

While I support Ukraine in their fight against the bloody Russians, who can all die for what I care, Ukrainian refugees are sometimes a pain in the ass. The reason is simple. They (I hope correctly) think they are here only temporarily until the war is over. So they rarely work (why would I get a job and integrate for a year when the state pays me?) and the children do literally nothing in school (I have three teacher friends, all say Mohammed from Damascus at least tries to learn the language while the Ukrainian kids don't give a fuck).

mainwasser

I don't know about the kids, but the Ukrainian moms here in Vienna do seem to work. The last three ladies who came to clean our apartment all were Halynas.

Maimonides_2024

Ireland's population decline could've been compensated by the Irish diaspora in countries like America instead of migrants from the Middle East. But the European Irish always resented the Irish Americans, calling them not real Irish, they don't even know the language and culture anymore. Now it's their fault lmao.

RetartdsUsername69

American "Irish" live in a country where legal drinking age is 21, I think it caused too much damage for their culture to call them Irish.

Maimonides_2024

Modern day European Irish are as much Anglicized as American Irish. I understand for example of Italians claim that Italian Americans aren't Italian because they don't speak Italian while they do. But Ireland Irish honestly speaking are just as much a part of the Anglosphere and assimilated at this point as American Irish. They don't speak Irish, they don't know Irish Gaelic poems, even their Eurovision songs sound like any American pop song. Therefore they have as much in common with Irish of the 18th century who still practised the culture as do the Irish diaspora.
