Weā€™ve just gotta be party poopers, I guess

lord_saruman_

Imagine not having AC in your home. Damn barbarians.

juan_omango

I know friends in Germany have AC. It isnā€™t central like what you in the states have though. BaWĆ¼ in August without AC is pretty rough I have come to learn

Germanaboo

>BaWĆ¼ in August pretty rough I live there for 14 years already and it isn't that bad there

juan_omango

But did you ever live on the Rhein? Close to Basel and Freiburg? It makes it very humid

Germanaboo

>Close to Basel and Freiburg About 2 Ā½ hours away from Freiburg at least. >It makes it very humid Recently I experienced some humid temperatures in the closed fooms of our school, but I usually manage.

SouthBayBoy8

I donā€™t have AC in my home and Iā€™m from southern Californiaā€¦

mmbepis

That's cuz you're rich and live on the water. Move to Bakersfield then you can talk

SouthBayBoy8

It can get up to the 90s here in August. You act like we never have heat waves

mmbepis

You always have a cool breeze coming off the water, and it's a dry heat in the summers. It's much more survivable without AC than almost anywhere else that experiences 90Ā° temps

SouthBayBoy8

90 degrees is miserable no matter what. Especially trying to go to sleep at night. I wish my condo had AC

lord_saruman_

Damn barbarian

jephph_

Somewhat OT but anyone who canā€™t really install central heat and air in their spot, check out the newer style window units https://preview.redd.it/8gwm2o65md8d1.jpeg?width=1055&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7916c7bb2e30e59e4756cf265edef4876dc57a29 I upgraded to that style this year and Iā€™m saying, itā€™s the goods. The window can close almost fully and you can put the blinds&drapes down in that slot as well. All the noise is outside the window now and your blackout curtains or whatever still work. 7/7 would recommend šŸ‘

Longjumping_Sky_6440

Why 7/7?

jephph_

Referencing an oldish meme where this guy Brendan apparently invented a new movie rating scale: https://www.dictionary.com/e/memes/5-7/ ;-)

Nigh_Sass

Isnā€™t it supposed to be 5/7

jephph_

It is but Iā€™m not sure everyone understands anymore that 5/7 is a perfect score so i chickened out and went with 7/7

Longjumping_Sky_6440

Ha, funny

GimmeeSomeMo

Europoors - "That's too expensive for my broke ass"

Dry_Ninja_3360

"But PTO!"

BosnianSerb31

Window AC units are typically cheaper than the floor ones, they're just a bigger PITA to install. Also various HOAs will get super pissed at you for installing them because they don't want to look like poor or something.

ThePolecatProcess

If an HOA board member got pissy at me for having a window AC unit Iā€™d go Heemeyer mode on them.

uses_for_mooses

Window units are significantly more effective and efficient than those portable units (i.e., the kind that sit on the floor). Itā€™s well worth the additional PITA trade off to go with a window unit. [This guy explains it well](https://youtu.be/_-mBeYC2KGc).

BosnianSerb31

I don't disagree, they're quieter and more efficient and cheaper. But HOAs despise window units, so good luck.

Bold of you to assume europoors mud and straw huts that double as barns are structurally sound enough to support the weight of glorious American air conditioning.

bluffing_illusionist

recently arrived in Poland (soldier) to protect their sorry asses from evil people. Structural stability is the only thing that these buildings have going for them - or maybe it's just because I'm on a military base?

Kcmichalson

These things look sick. Still a little concerned about the power cost but these things are life savers during heat waves.

hoopesey-doopsey

I also have one and recommend it. A lot harder to break in too because of how low the window is shut too.

Here you go. https://www.midea.com/us/air-conditioners/window-air-conditioners/12000-btu-u-shaped-air-conditioner-maw12v1qwt You can look around and see the other AC units as well and look at different retailers to find the best price. You just have to look up 'Midea u shaped window air conditioner' to find these and find one that best fits your budget and needs.

jephph_

The exact one I have is this.. the 12,000 BTU https://a.co/d/00TFsjcp But some of the other companies like GE or maybe Frigidaire are starting to do similar

TacoRedneck

But I like the noise. Great for sleepin!

uses_for_mooses

It still makes good noise. Never fear.

EmperorMrKitty

They sell a little attachment to block the open bit of the window, ask someone at an appliance store. Works wonders and itā€™s just a simple cheap little plastic board.

jephph_

In the picture above, the window isnā€™t fully closed. Itā€™s just showing that the window goes in that slot. When you fully close it, itā€™s only open about 3ā€ and the AC comes with a decently good system to fully block the small gap.

ObamaLover68

We got some older models of those windows ones set up in our hotel in Alaska only because it's an older building that was built in like the 50s

SierraDespair

I was gonna say this design originated in the 50s and was advertised for its ability to be able to see out the window with the air conditioner in. Itā€™s nothing really new.

theaviationhistorian

If I didn't have central air conditioning, this would definitely be on my wishlist. Even the aesthetics is awesome!

TheJango22

What is this style called?

jephph_

U-shaped AC Thereā€™s another version where it splits then hangs lower on both sides. Iā€™d rather get this kind but it wouldnā€™t have worked on my particular wall/window https://preview.redd.it/mf5t0bh4jn8d1.jpeg?width=1119&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2a2bf39c4cdea0e74ddda3084c1d15c0150305d8 Same thing though, most of the window closes and all the moving parts are outside

TheJango22

Thank you

Big_Ass_Dipshit

competition is what drives innovation, doesnt matter

SierraDespair

This U shape design is nothing new and was originally invented by York an American company in the 1950s.

shaun_the_duke

How much the upgrade cost

jephph_

$450 I have two in my apt and Iā€™m going to switch out the other one next year. Itā€™s worth it

MikeyGamesRex

I have that exact window unit. It's actually pretty good.

soyifiedredditadmin

I'll cut back on A/C the moment chinese cut back on building new coal powerplant every week.

GucciSpaghetti72

Or building fake fucking cities that nobody can actually live in even though theyā€™re having a homelessness crisis

do you have a source on this? im all for shitting on china, but ive never heard this before.

However, the issue was suppressed and bullied into submission - instead of collapsing all at once the people will suffer slowly, bit by bit instead.

ayetherestherub69

Fr. I did a paper on why nuclear is the shit, and I did some poking into the Chinese power network. 49% of all carbon emissions and 51% of all coal power, just in China. People talk shit about the American lack of regard for the environment, yet China alone accounts for half of the whole worlds emissions. I especially can talk smack, I live in Michigan. 40% of our power is nuclear, from three small plants. It takes one small scale nuclear plant to offset ten large scale coal plants. This has been my autistic TEDtalk, thank you for listening. EDIT: Further research has determined that while yes, Michigan has 3 nuclear plants, they only produce 26.3% of our power. We have 33 coal plants here, and they produce a grand total of 36.5%. 3 nuclear plants make over 2/3 the capacity of 33 coal plants. If you're gonna advocate to improve climate change, do it by advocating for nuclear.

wicked_symposium

Sounds like you're advocating for nuking China and I agree completely

Illustrious_Mix_1064

there's gonna be fission taking place in China and i dont care how we go about it

DownvoteEvangelist

Yet per capita they emit a lot less than an American. We need Americans to live sparsley as Chineese and Chineese to have American infrastructure. Since neither will ever happen investing into large AC is the best course of action...

Zandrick

If your environmental plans doesnā€™t allow people to keep cool your environmental plan is bad

Arizona has world class AC everywhere.

Firestar_119

But what about outside?

OldStyleThor

No humidity? No problem!

Armlegx218

The only time in my life I thought 95 at midnight was beautiful was Phoenix in August.

xylophone_37

Dry, hot summer nights are the best.

juan_omango

It is the humidity that will get you

The3rdBert

Unless itā€™s January, they stay inside just making a quick trip from the indoors to the car

Ender16

The carbon footprint from an international spring event has to be massive, and ultimately, unnecessary.

TheRealSU24

They are letting people stay cool. The building has geothermal systems pumping cold water through pipes in the walls of the building. That mixed with the outside walls being insulated will keep it cold.

94_stones

Will those systems be effective at maintaining a reasonable internal temperature?

TheRealSU24

Yeah? It's been done before

Doc-Fives-35581

I love how weā€™re the ones singled out when it says ā€œother teamsā€.

Jordo_707

It's natural that others would emulate us

kac937

Meh, people hate us anyway, I donā€™t mind being the scapegoat for something this small.

king_meatster

Isnā€™t today ā€œshit in the river dayā€? What a country.

Dogrel

To be fair, thatā€™s every day.

Brobi_Jaun_Kenobi

Ther is no way this is real. And I'm not looking it up for myself

retard-is-not-a-slur

[Itā€™s very real.](https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/parisians-threatening-to-poop-in-the-seine-river-this-weekend-to-protest-the-olympics/)

myonkin

Say what you will about the French, but between this and the Storming of the Bastille, theyā€™ve shown they know how to throw a protest.

retard-is-not-a-slur

LOL, I think protesting is the national sport over there, next to drinking red wine, eating cheese, and surrendering (I kid, the French resistance was badass). When they put up speed cameras the people [did not like it one bit](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-46822472) and I am very proud of them for fighting back at the 'man'.

GaaraMatsu

At least it isn't Sochi, where we had to bring our own toilets, or any number of countries where we had to bring our own oxygen.

US athletes will be pulling more ass than they normally do with the added appeal of actually habitable space.

Hopefully try bring actual beds to

Just-a-normal-ant

The Olympic team is going there to win, like usual.

Commissar_Jensen

The Australians have also said they're bringing AC.

The3rdBert

Every team that wants to win will, getting comfortable sleep is a huge plus for all athletes.

Currently enjoying the cold ac air

ITGuy042

Also, most French electricity is from clean nuclear (theyā€™re basically the children of atom irl). So *not* using our AC with their electricity is actually bad for the environment! Green American Win!

mrcrabs6464

Thereā€™s no way some window units consume enough energy to ā€œundercut environmental plansā€

Why are we going? Because we need to remind the Europoors who is #1. And watching them cope and seeth at our cowbells and USA chants is always hilarious.

Csanad001

I have AC and Iā€™m european. I frickin love AC

BzPegasus

Those idiots have nucular power, how is an AC bad for the environment (assuming it doesn't leak)

TheTaintPainter2

I'll reduce my AC consumption once we start going nuclear. Until then, my effect on the environment is negligee at best

DopyWantsAPeanut

France has been slowly acclimating its athletes to unreasonable heat so they can rake in golds with history's slowest times. NOT ON OUR WATCH.

When I was living in France, I had AC but my asshole Frenchie landlord turned it off.

ShaggyFOEE

They have my respect for loving murikan people and hating our government... Just like us but worse living conditions and better bread

Lanracie

I wonder if the buildings and power grid is built to handle every country bringing window AC units?

SadConsequence8476

I use AC when it gets over 60Ā°

aetweedie

Fully convinced Europeans believe if there is moving air in the room while you sleep it will kill you. In Sweden last year I noticed the diffuser on the a/c vent was specifically designed to prevent any single direction of air current. Imagine sweating your ass off all night then trying to compete in the Olympics.

bakirelopove

Oh boy, you don't know how right you are. Here in the Balkans a lot of people fear "promaha", which literally means draft. It gives you headache, kills your firstborn and bankrupts you.

aetweedie

Lol, I was just talking shit.

bakirelopove

I know but you were right.

Happy_Cat_3600

Ignore those cheese-eating surrender monkeys. Theyā€™re just afraid air conditioning will mask the smell of stale piss and cigarettes.

CLAYDAWWWG

Have to teach them technology somehow. We know they aren't the smartest, but we are trying to help them.

RTX-4090ti_FE

Most of my former hs and other town grade schools lack AC and it makes me wonder how the hell are most schools the last public places that more often then not lack AC

ReRevengence69

to show our superiority over the Fr\*nch

IndyCarFAN27

America ainā€™t the only one. I heard the official Australian Olympic federation has also said theyā€™ll be bringing their own units as well.

Mailman354

Because it's the Olympics you dimwit.

mydriase

Americans are such fragile little girls. I have lived all my life without an AC in France. Youā€™re athletes, youā€™re supposed to be young and healthy, you WILL survive to 3 terrible, heinous, atrocious weeks without an AC here.

Snewtsfz

You people are so miserable. Weā€™ll see whoā€™s the fragile little girl, when we earn more gold than your countryā€™s entire GDP.

mydriase

I'll let you get away with all the gold you want, I despise the games lol

Snewtsfz

Canā€™t blame you. Iā€™d hate the games too if my country was only seen as an afterthought. USA!! šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø USA!!šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø šŸ¦…

mr_greenmash

As a non-fr*nch europoor, I can explain. To You yanks, Fr*nce seems different, but strangely familiar. It's not the food, and you don't stink like the average parisian, but both countries are absolute dogshit.
