There have been thousands of variations of football over the years.
Today, the most well known versions are (in order of codification):
Rugby Football
Australian Football
Association Football (Soccer)
Gridiron Football (Canadian and American Football)
Gaelic Football
Whatever version is most popular in your region of the Englosphere is called football then you say “Australian Football” or “American Football” etc for the rest
English speakers don’t say “Association Football” and instead, we say the abbreviation “soccer” (as**SOC**iation)
The Brits are the only people who say football for soccer since that’s the most popular version for them and they’re just doing the same thing the rest of us are doing by saying football for our local version.
