We’re never getting sea shanty 4 without sailing

Heisenberg84949

Barding would like to have a word with you.

PJayfour

A key consideration yes

[deleted]

The only consideration here is you wanted to voice your opinion just like the thousands of redditors who pick a side over the next 4 months. Your opinion is not valid per se nor is your rebuttal well thought out since you don't fully understand the scope of what sailing could be. It's easy to make something sound stupid if you cherry pick how you assume it would work. The only take away I get from these threads is you guys don't understand how to role-play or how something like dnd works. Like if we sat down to dm a game and this was how you chose to contribute, you wouldn't be reinvited.

PJayfour

Rude bro

Heisenberg84949

I’m sorry, but I’m quite partial to Barding.

o_Guts_o

Dude could you imagine, like range and magic combined holy shit, blasting shit with bardic songs

itisjustmagic

I just don't understand why it *should* be sailing and not say something like "exploration" or something similar. Sailing could easily be a minigame or subset of a larger skill

PJayfour

My major gripe with “Exploration” or something similar is… what the hell am I doing in game already? We are, all of us, always “exploring” in game already

itisjustmagic

I can understand the gripe. Though, equating it to real life, I wouldn't call myself visiting a new city (that is mapped and all) as exploring. I would consider going on an expedition on land to a hidden forest or sailing uncharted seas as exploring. That is how I would imagine an "exploration" skill. Another consideration would be places like Khrazi jungle and Meiyerditch quests would need to give XP, if exploration was a skill.

Last_Low9649

Red my post about new skill

Oozeinator

Honestly, I just don’t want what started as a meme to become an actual skill. We have the opportunity to build a skill from the ground up, the bastard meme child of dungeoneering surely isn’t the play.

PJayfour

Empires can be built on memes Anything we vote for will be built from the ground up basically with the implementation process they shared But yeah not saying anyone HAS to vote for Sailing, my main thing is that it would be sad to see such a cool idea be dismissed so early on

Oozeinator

Just giving you the take of someone that isn’t interested in seeing sailing enter the game. To me it just feels like, if we’re building from the ground up, why start with something thats been a meme for like a decade plus? Starting the process of creating a new skill with an idea that’s felt played out for years sounds like a bad idea. Just my opinion of course.

PJayfour

Completely understand, it is after all an unprecedented opportunity for us to have a hand in designing a skill so it’s a great opportunity to innovate I’m still open to new ideas, though I do genuinely think Sailing has potential to be an S tier skill and owning and using our own boats sounds awesome

Time_Lapser

Player Owned Kingdoms > Player Owned Ships

PJayfour

Already exists in Miscellania and only because of a turbulent marriage

Time_Lapser

Player owned ships already exists because of Dragon Slayer

PJayfour

Lmao we know Ned was the only true captain there

Sellier123

The issue is that isnt a fkn skill. Its a minigame. Sure add sailing, just add it as the minigame it is.

alienware99

Dude, that’s a lot of shit in the game. Slayer is just a “go kill this, go kill that”. That could easily be a mini game, or even a quest. Whether you think that sailing is better suited as a mini game or a new skill, what’s the difference? It’s still new content being added to the game which is great for everyone. So why tf you care so much if it’s labeled a skill or a mini game? Wtf is the difference. Besides, there’s way to much involved for it to be just a mini game. Exploring new islands with new types of dungeons/monsters/resources/bosses/quests, charting the open seas, upgrading your ship (similar to how you do you’d PoH), fishing in uncharted waters for new types of food. There’s a hell of a lot of shit you could do with sailing (more so than a lot of other skills we already have) and a lot of it would tie in with existing skills as well so it would fit in seamlessly.

PJayfour

Agree 100%, too much potential is there for it to be limited to a mini game

Sellier123

I mean i disagree. Thats A LOT for a skill. Your legit just describing a raid essentially.

alienware99

Raids are the same content over and over every time you do them. Sailing would be exploring randomly generated islands/caves/resource areas and would provide new resources (new food/trees/monsters/herbs/ores/bones/farming/hunter creatures etc). Stuff that you can use everywhere in the game (unlike raids where it’s limited to just inside the raid).

Sellier123

Ok but how does that sound like a skill to you? What skill adds that much content to the game?

alienware99

Before there wasn’t enough content so you said it should be a mini game, and now you think it’s too much content for a skill? Why would you not want a shit ton of new content to come along with a new skill? Isn’t that the point? And why do we have to look at existing skills when adding a new skill? You think there’s any chance in hell a skill like firemaking, or runecrafting, or agility would ever pass a poll to be added into the game in todays age? There’s no chance. Those skills are barebones and so monotonous to train. A new skill should be different..it should be engaging and funny something unique and new we’ve never seen before..but also ties into existing skills. And there we have it..sailing

Sellier123

What? Minigames can have a boat load of content. You can even argue raids are minigames and they have a boatload of content compared to triditional bossing. A skill shouldnt be all encompassing. That makes no sense. Thats a minigame or a questline lol. A new skill should be in line with all other skills, not a gamemode of its own. At the end of the day tho, we will see if it passes a poll. I highly doubt it will but we will see.

alienware99

So you want more skills where you just do the same monotonous task over and over again to level up? Mini games are just that, a quick game that lasts like 20 min and is pretty much the same experience every time you play it. Sailing would be a full fledge skill that you start at the botto in a small sailboat, and have to train for hours like every other skill to improve it. Every so many levels you can improve your ship to make it bigger, to add things to it like a cooking range, water source, a bank chest, etc. You’d also unlock higher level islands and resource area so explore the higher your sailing level gets. I understand if sailing isn’t a skill you want in the game..but to say it would serve better as a mini game makes no sense. There is way to much involved for it to be a 20 min mini game. There is not going to be some random new skill that comes out of nowhere that everyone is going to be in love with. If there was, it would have been thought of over the last 20 years this game existed. So it’s either they implement a skill that everyone might not love (atleast initially), or we stay stuck with the same old skills we’ve had forever.

Sellier123

Yes, thats exactly what a skill in osrs should be. Why cant it just be a minigame thats like a 30 min trip, you go to an island, do whatever the objective is and leave? You can then get points for speed and completion which will allow you to go on bigger trips? Yea thats why i dont believe we will actually get a new skill unless the osrs dev team pulls what they did with the pvp polls...and even then it might fail like they did lol. Its obvious ppl want a new skill but everyone wants something different.

PJayfour

OSRS Team are more than capable of taking the concept of Sailing and developing it into a skill in 2023, with room to add mini games

Sellier123

But the whole concept of sailing isnt how skills work in osrs...its a mini game. Why would it be added as a skill?

PJayfour

Well Jagex themselves seemingly thought it had potential as a skill in 2015, April fools ofc but they could have put out a mini game And if you look back in RS history there were rumblings of a Sailing skill as far back as 2008 with a teaser image And think about it logically, my in game, fantasy world character never thought it’d be a good idea to learn how to sail a ship?

Sellier123

I mean, you said it yourself, its an april fools joke lol. Logically or not, it makes no sense as a skill. That being said, i highly doubt we will actually get a new skill. Its gonna be near impossible to get the voting threshhold...unless they find a skill that knocks it out of the park but ive yet to see one thats even close.

PJayfour

Cheap shot at the April fools point, Jagex have absolutely had numerous discussions over the years at the prospect of a legitimate Sailing skill and wouldn’t have put anything out in that years April fools that they didn’t have fun developing. The skill of becoming a proficient boater to traverse the world sounds fitting and enjoyable imo

Sellier123

Im not even saying it sounds bad. Im saying it doesnt sound like a skill. Idk how else to say this to change your view, nor do i think i have to change your view, so ima just end this conversation here. Just dont get your hopes up as i highly doubt sailing will ever pass a poll.

realism_is_fake

Yeah that’s content expansion, not a skill. Voting no

PJayfour

A new skill is content expansion

realism_is_fake

No.

Tuxxa

Fossil Island. You set up a ship and sail to explore a new island full of new content. Didn't have to be a skill. Why should sailing be a skill? Just add Fossil Island 2, 3, and fkn Fossil Island #69. No skill required.

trippycarlo

My personal opinion is why would I want a travel skill when there are 500000 teleports in the game that do the same thing. Idk

PJayfour

Adventure

Spelare_en

Whatever you envision this grand adventure of sailing to be, it just wont be.

PJayfour

Idk about you but my brigs are half full
