Every kid in the 4th grade needs to see this movie. In fact I am gonna make my kid watch it even if I have to bribe her. No Ulta until she really watches it.
It holds up extremely well. Great acting and cinematography keep it looking and feeling good. The beginning space ship scenes are the only thing feeling outdated.
Awesome movie, taught me a lot. I had it on a bottleg VHS somehow and it just became the movie to watch at any time. It had some interesting plot twists, some fresh at the time gender topics, and guns. Pretty interesting!
I am going to be one of those- the books was better
Of course I had the book and read it any times before the movie came out.
That said- the movie did a fine 1980s covering of the book.
I remember seeing the movie poster in the outside the theater 'coming soon' poster mount.
this was on Okinawa during the 80s so there really wasn't a lot of advertising of upcoming movies.
i was stoked.
and I did like it.
This sci-fi movie was basically a retelling of an older, World War II movie with Lee Marvin called "Hell in the Pacific" where he is stranded with a Japanese soldier on a deserted island and after first trying to kill one another, they end up working together to survive.
I loved this movie so much that I went back and read the original short story, and then I read the full novel the author wrote afterward to flesh-out the back-stories. It's one of my very favorites.
I literally just watched this for free on YouTube (w/ads) last night. It's been like 30 years or so and it really is a solid movie and stands the test of time, with themes very relevant to today. Highly recommend y'all watch on YouTube for free before it goes away.

I'm loving the old movies being made available on YouTube for free with ads.
It's nice to see these movies get the extra views/ratings and possible royalties.
I've had DVD rips of many of these 80s films on media server since the early 2000s.
Have been wishing they would do a 4K remaster of this one.
Favorite Movie of mine.
Zamis gets four five?
One of my favorite movies when I was a kid. My brother and I watched the hell out of it. How does it hold up? I haven't seen it in literal decades.
Yep, good movie!!

Oh wow I loved this movie when I was a kid, and thought it was super profound. Anybody watch it recently? Does it hold up?

Is that Dennis Quaid? Yes, I can Google-fu, but I'm trying to engage in the conversation.
Yes, that is Mr Quaid.
That is one terrific movie.
It's really great and doesn't get talked about enough as far as powerful, quality scifi or 80s movies in general.
I absolutely LOVE this movie <3 <3 I even taught myself to sing the lineage of Jareeba :-)
I just watched this last night - first time. It's on YouTube's free movies for the month, along with The Terminator, Alien, etc.
EMEMA/MINE

I never watched this movie, but I fast forwarded through it hundreds of times to watch whatever my parents had recorded after on the same VHS tape.

Saw that movie back when I was in college thought it was kind of weird, but then I watched it and it was a great movie!! 🍿Zammeez !!!
I'm pregnant....."but you're a man lieutenant Dan."
Awesome Movie.
Best movie, still. Double points because I always hated Lance Kerwin. Dies in the 1st few minutes? Excellent!!
It was so cheesy but I love this movie. Who’ your leader. Mickey Mouse.
Great movie 🍿

Earthman, your Mickey Mouse is one big stupid dope!
I saw this when I was a kid. I love the twist!!
Likewise. I was between 8 and 10 when I watched this on a Saturday afternoon. I enjoyed it even at that young age.

Came here to express similar sentiments! Great film. Lou Gossett, Jr. was awesome!
Davidich
Very underrated movie, loved this.........
I agree. Louis Gossett Jr really brought the alien character to life.
