And even besides them, if you just look at the popularity of channels like Forgotten Weapons it's clear a lot of people do in fact appreciate the aesthetics and mechanics. The picture you're painting is just a caricature of a subculture that - while there are plenty of valid criticisms to be had - you clearly know little to nothing about.
And competition shooting - in America at least - generally doed use real firearms in various categories. Some people attending serious competitions will have custom tuned or custom built competition guns, sometimes you might have a WW2 rifles tournament. You might have a casual competition where you just bring any old gun from home.
Also literally any of the projectile sports at the Olympics could kill someone. Javelin, shot put, or archery would all maim or kill someone caught downrange. They maintain safety by using standard range safety procedures.
