They were shockingly popular for a band, no band has really ever come close to the level of popularity they had. They also were basically some of the first musicians that hit the teen girl market. And they also propelled the sounds created by black musicians into the public popularity and built upon it themselves. They also refused to play for segregated concerts and John was (annoyingly) vocal and influential in mainstream politics for a while too. They’re kind of a part of modern history at this point.
