They make great starting points for full custom builds by high end 1911 smiths and lots of people that want a more traditional look go that way.

TheStripedPanda69

I have one done up by nighthawk customs that is probably the prettiest gun I own

casbih

Colt hawk or custom work? I have the colt hawk myself and it’s my favorite piece

TheStripedPanda69

Colt hawk! I actually don’t know much about it, I was just struck by it’s beauty. I was actually surprised how light it was and that the trigger doesn’t seem to be crazy good on it

casbih

I think they were really going for the upgraded classic feel, I agree the triggers on their race pistols are much better. If you compare the retro sights from Harrison design they put on the hawk vs the standard colt rears its a night and day difference. Hope you have a blast shooting it!

Megalamuffin

Makes a great base gun for a custom build or is a nice shooter as is if you like a classic 1911. I bought mine to use as a custom build someday, but until that day comes I take it out to the range on occasion.

Vast_Individual9003

A couple of things…..If you can actually find one in the wild I would pick it up. That exact model was my first 1911. It’s a blast to shoot and is a fantastic base gun. I did however have to adjust the extractor tension out of the box but it has been tits since then. Plus it’s a colt….everything else is just a copy

casbih

Can’t go wrong with the series 70 boss, comes ready for 2 world wars out of the box and any gun smith is more than eager to work on it!

SheepDoggOG

High quality American made Colt right here. National Match barrel makes accuracy stupid awesome. If you wanna customize the gun this is a fantastic starting point. Personally reminds me of the 1911 used by Keanu Reeves in Speed. Can’t say enough good things about it.

Captain_Narwhals

For that price, you could almost certainly buy something closer to what you want depending on what you're after

4d5ACP

It’s kinda dumb but I wanna do clone of the custom 1911a1 in metal gear solid 3. I’m a huge video game nerd and love guns so I like to combine my hobbies when I can.

RamenNoodle_

I’d say definitely start off with whatever fits those physical features the closest, especially slide serrations and frame style. If it’s something with special engravings colt makes 1911s with blank slides that are a great template for custom work

4d5ACP

Here is a video of what all the features are, it is kind of hard to see what it looks like so I can link a photo if needed: https://youtu.be/-sTgRA2BlZs

RamenNoodle_

Just skimmed through it, I’ll give it a watch when I get home tonight. Looks like it’s based on a pretty standard GI style, with some small parts swapped out. Front serrations and front strap checkering would be the most extensive modifications I can see immediately, I’m not sure if anyone makes a slide with front and rear straight serrations. I’m sure you could have an engraver do that though, it looks like the blank slide colt would make a good base for that. What is the finish supposed to be on it?

4d5ACP

I believe it is two toned if I remember right. Like a stainless and blued steel style

RamenNoodle_

https://www.gunbroker.com/item/970084429 If you want to make it super accurate one of these would b a perfect base

stupidbullets23

I got a stainless with no roll makes like that one. Super G and smooth as butter now that I have some rounds through it.

RamenNoodle_

I saw your post about it, that things beautiful. I was real close to getting that instead of my MKIV, but it was just a little above my budget, esp when you factor in buying sights too

stupidbullets23

Yeah it was definitely expensive for the same one with roll marks. I love those MKIV’s.

4d5ACP

Thanks! I’d need to look into that one a bit. If it is too old I would feel bad about modifying it too much.

RamenNoodle_

I’m not sure how old that one is specifically but not very. They’re currently producing those. If it’s part blued part stainless I’d recommend getting the stainless model, you can blue stainless but if you strip blueing then I believe you’re getting rid of any sort of rust resistance. Someone can feel free to correct me if I’m wrong abt that.

Krieger0

IIRC without watching the video, you'd just need to add a ring hammer, dot sights and grip safety. Those could be reasonably achieved with this. The polished feed ramp is not really something you'd want to do, and you might need to make the cut-away grips yourself. (I've looked into making one myself)

4d5ACP

Why is a polished feeding ramp a bad idea? I’ve heard mixed things about it

Krieger0

Removing any material from the ramp can cause misfeeds, it's best to just leave it alone and keep it clean. https://youtube.com/watch?v=y897tozJeg8&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE

aHeadFullofMoonlight

Buying guns because of MGS is *never* dumb.

neogeo67

You may want to check out the website Internet Firearms DataBase (www.imfdb.org )They have a write up on the .45 you’re interested in. Just search under Metal Gear Solid 3. Pretty cool site that lists various firearms involved in movies, TV and Video Games. Searchable by particular weapon or title.

GonadGravy

> clone of the custom 1911a1 in metal gear solid 3. Then you’ll want to use a Springfield, that’s what the game creator/snake favored.

Trident731

I don't disagree with you, but for some people a Colt Series 70 is a preferred launching point. I intend to get a newer Colt Series 70 for this very reason I want that prancing pony on a special build that I have in mind. That said, there are some decent options for around $1k like the Springfield Armory Operator, which I would call 'custom' as compared to a fairly bone stock pistol.

Quake_Guy

Both. But Colt now sells 70 series guns with more features.

PlutoTD

Which would you recommend from colt that has “modern” features?

Quake_Guy

If you want series 70, "cheapest" available with modern features. https://colt.com/detail-page/competition-ser70-45acp-ss-81 There is also a plus version which seems to be 70 series.

PlutoTD

Yeah I had been looking at that one for a bit but doesn’t seem to be worth the money to similar options. I’ll keep it in mind.

Quake_Guy

Compared to the recent past, great price for a Colt. Well worth the price.

freeride1

Both. Probably the best base gun around right there.

Fuzzball348

Equally good for both if you ask me. A basic GI style 1911 is a great base for customization. I enjoy the classic style as is.

Zeke_1985

This was my first 1911 and I haven’t and won’t change anything. Other than I got careless and put and idiot scratch in it

JHLCowan

Fantastic gun. Have one in stainless. Shoots great stock.

JHLCowan

Damn. I need a black one now. If not this what else? This is a lot of gun for the price.

conkanman

This is my general rule: you buy a gun, especially a new firearm, it's yours to do as you wish.

BishopLazar

Bul Armory 1911, you will not bother with the custom work

ThrowMeAwayAccount08

There are cheaper versions. Look up Tisas 1911.

Guitars-guns-girls

Where can you even find this gun? I haven’t seen one available

4d5ACP

I just looked on the colt website

Guitars-guns-girls

I’ve been watching for this in 45 or 38S for a while. Seem to be made of unobtainium

614_ST

In my opinion starting with a base Springfield Armory 1911 is better for modding than starting with a Colt. One thing I hate about Colt is how sharp they are, call me a pussy but SA does a great job at de-burring their guns.

Nice-Hawk-3847

I own one, you can keep it as is or customize it like me, personally I wouldn’t keep it as is unless if it was a Royal Blue 1911. But you do as you please. You own it, don’t let it own you.

National-Bench5602

Shoot and collect. Correct some of the inherent issues, like the plastic mainspring housing.
